42. David Dow Bently
The crighton was packed for classy Four Freshmen . By david Dow BentleyIII, The People's Critic. November 17, 2002. david Dow Bentley III.

The Crighton was packed for classy "Four Freshmen" By: David Dow Bentley III, The People's Critic November 17, 2002 David Dow Bentley III It was another sign of the sophisticated tastes of Montgomery County theatergoers. "The Four Freshman" sold out the Crighton Theatre far in advance of last week's totally delicious performance. No one who bought a ticket was disappointed. Arranged by the Montgomery County Performing Arts Society, the concert was pure gold from beginning to end. The famed group originated in 1948 and has continued to evolve to the present incarnation. I can echo the publicity claim that "The new group not only preserves The Four Freshman sound. They enhance it with their youth, vitality and talent..."
Ranging in age from 24 to 31, the artists in question live up to those claims big-time! All were excellent vocalists, while Brian Eichenberger sang lead and played both bass and guitar. Vince Johnson added smooth trombone and also showed skill on bass and guitar. Bob Ferreira covered percussion beautifully with drums that never overwhelmed the smooth harmonies. Curtis Calderon brought great trumpet work to the equation; and while the instrumental work was superb, the vocal harmonies were on an even higher plane.
There was a delightfully jazzy "Night and Day," followed by a "You Stepped Out of A Dream" with perhaps the smoothest harmonies to hit the Crighton stage since the memorable Ink Spots visit last year. Ferreira's subtle percussion enhanced a dreamy "Come Into My Heart." "Young and Foolish" brought more great jazz with stellar trumpet work from Calderon. There were wonderful a cappella moments in the bluesy masterpiece, "When Your Lover Has Gone." The Crighton's acoustics and rosy stage lighting were perfect, and the performers had high praise for the beautifully restored theater.

David George Crighton, 1942-2000
One of the great abiding interests of his life developed at this time. In the Long Vacation of 1962 he travelled to the Bayreuth Festival, attending performances of a Ring cycle and four other Wagner operas. In an extremely busy academic life, opera, especially Wagner, would always be made a place. Crighton eventually became a regular contributor to Wagner News. One of his last major public appearances was to conduct the Jesus College Orchestra in an extremely moving performance of the Overture to Tannhäuser on 27 February this year. For whatever reason, perhaps influenced by his ill health in his second year, Crighton decided not to follow the customary route for a Cambridge mathematician aspiring to an academic career. Rather than stay on after graduation to read for Part III of the Mathematical Tripos, in 1964 he took a position at Woolwich Polytechnic, whilst carrying on with his studies at London University, initially for an MSc. Later he was to say that lecturing on mathematics to students, some of whom had limited interest in the subject, taught him valuable lessons, including techniques of crowd control. Within a year, Crighton transferred to a PhD under the supervision of John Ffowcs Williams, then Reader in Applied Mathematics at Imperial College (and now Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge), initially remaining employed at Woolwich Polytechnic. Ffowcs Williams was Chairman of the Concorde Noise Panel and Crighton began working with him on the problem of Concorde's take-off noise and the related challenge of limiting the generation of the underwater sound by submarines by which they might be detected, becoming his research assistant at Imperial in 1967.

4) David Crighton Concert
Sam and the committee were congratulated on a very successful concert. All feedback has been extremely positive. It was noted that there was a problem with the sale of drinks in the interval. Due to the large volume poured out by college staff and to the huge demand at the beginning of the interval, it was extremely difficult to enforce the charges, and even to make guests aware of them. It was decided that in future, college staff will be asked before the concert to pour out less wine in order to reduce the loss incurred by the society.
5) May Week Concert
a) Programme
It was reported that Vincent Wong will perform Mozart's 17th Piano Concerto in G major, K.453. The rest of the programme, it was agreed, will be decided by email once suggestions have been made by members. It was noted that the deadline for the Concert Calendar is the 6th March, so it would be useful to have the programme decided by then.

Chemical Alice
An entirely personal history by David Weston New! 2002 reunion gig page From time to time Chemical Alice music will appear on the BoA MP3 download page In The Beginning... Most of what follows was kick started by my first visit to the Stonehenge free festival in June 1980. Unlike the massive gatherings of 1983 and 1984 this was a smaller much more communual affair deriving much of it's energy and identity from groups such as the Tibetan Ukranian Mountain Troupe and the Tepee people. One particular night's entertainment remains fresh and powerful in my memory, an all night session in the Tibetan's wonderful blue and white striped marquee featuring such bands as Thandoy and the You band (rather Gong like as you would expect). As a result of that experience much of the music that followed attempted in some way to re-create the spacey, free-flowing and yes, psychedelic jams first heard at Stonehenge. In fact to this day among close friends who understand such mysteries, certain music will evoke the cry, 'sounds like a tent at Stonehenge music'! Chemical Alice Line-Up 1 September 1980
