It's Over
Well, after 6 years of work, I have decided to cease updating the History of Home Video Games Homepage. It's been a blast, let me tell you! I'm doing this as a result of my own realizations. Yes, I still have fond memories of videogames, both old, and some not so old as a result of this page. Still, I have come to the realization that I have other interests, now. This page was a wonderful diversion during my college years, and has been a source of both good and bad experiences. I also want to thank the supporters of this page over the years. After all these years, you still frequent my page on a daily basis. Oh, sure, it's easy to say these types of things, but really. If not for you, I wouldn't have been mentioned in Internet Underground, or the biggies like Yahoo! Internet Life and Wired. It's truly been a blessing, and I thank you. Finally, it's important to mention that this site will remain on the Internet, parked, for people to enjoy. It's enough of an archive that really doesn't need much maintenance, as proven by my lack of updates over the past, say, three years or so. You'll still be able to access the archives, although the search pages won't exist any longer. Perhaps someone will index the site and make it searchable, I don't know. The manuals, ROMs, labels, overlays, and screenshots will all remain here for as long as people access them. Greg Chance gchance@videogames.org

David Crighton died on April 12 With the tragically premature death of David Crighton, on 12 April at the age of 57, the University lost one of its most charismatic and influential former staff members. Coming to Leeds in 1974, remarkably to a Chair in Applied Mathematics as his first permanent post, he quickly justified the foresight and perception of the appointing committee. Indeed the School of Mathematics at Leeds provided the canvas on which David’s remarkable range of talents and energies were first demonstrated. His appointment created an ideal marriage, not without its tensions and occasional disagreements, but one from which both partners, he and the University, benefited greatly. The Leeds department of Applied Mathematics, which in 1974 was modest in its achievements and expectations had, by the time of his departure to Cambridge in 1986, become unquestionably one of the top three or four departments in the country. The credit for this transformation, which has happily been maintained, lies overwhelmingly with David. His successive spells as Head of Department, Chairman of School and Chairman of the Science Board left in every case indelible marks of his imagination, energy and effectiveness which have subsequently become more widely familiar through his similar contributions, often as President, to virtually all national and international applied maths organisations. What everyone remembers is his style, marrying the ability to take tough decisions, with boundless good humour and care for and interest in the individual. It was rare indeed for any other reference, as much for a journal paper as for a prestigious chair candidate, to show more careful, detailed and astute assessment than David’s, despite the immense load of such tasks he was called upon to carry out.

Conference of Heads of Departments of Mathematical Sciences
Minutes of the Committee Meeting held at UCL on 18th May 1995, commencing at 11.30am.
Present: Allan Norcliffe (Sheffield Hallam) in the Chair, Mike Atkinson (St Andrews), David Bartholomew (RSS), Ken Brown (LMS), Martin Everett (Greenwich), Ekkehard Kopp (Hull), David Larman (UCL), Adrian Lepper (IMA), Allan Ryley (Glamorgan), Graham Wilks (Keele). 1. Membership and Apologies: Mike Atkinson, David Bartholomew and Ken Brown were welcomed to their first meeting of the Committee. Apologies for absence had been received from Mike Crampin, David Crighton and Donald Davison, all of whom had engagements i n their home institutions. 2. The minutes of the meeting held on 26th January 1995 were approved. 3. Matters arising form the minutes: Min 3: No action had yet been taken on the issue of advertising of courses. It was agreed to set up a HoDoMS Home Page on the World Wide Web, which could encourage member departments to use this facility in preference to commercial publishers for making courses known to prospective applicants, and to take part in promoting UK Mathematics, rather than use resources for competition. (Action: Mike Atkinson and Ekkehard Kopp) Min 5: RAE follow-up: it was reported that the mathematics panels would be chaired by Barry Johnson (Pure), David Crighton (Applied) and Mike Titterington (Statistics). The full panels should be known soon, and it was intended that clear decisions on cri teria and procedures would be communicated to the mathematical community in the early autumn. The Committee agreed that it might not be appropriate to ask any panel chairman to lead an item on this at the AGM, but that the Committee should endeavour to pr ovide any information available at the time. There might be a need for a further HoDoMS meeting in the winter to monitor preparations for the RAE in March 1996; meanwhile, we could press the concerns raised in our submission (which had received no respons e so far). (Action: Ekkehard Kopp)

Council endorses CDC Workfare scheme
Monday, 12 April 1999 Early this evening, the Christchurch City Council endorsed its involvement with the abhorrent Workfare scheme as run by its employment arm. Two months ago, this employment arm, Canterbury Development Corporation, was asked to report on its own involvement in the controversal Community Wage (work-for-the-dole) scheme. Today, this report was presented to the Strategy and Resources Committee. The chair, Cr David Close, attempted to table (accept) the report but Cr Carole Anderton repeatedly requested that it be debated first. David eventually conceded. Carole and Cr Anna Crighton raised many concerns about the scheme; like how CDC got involved without telling the Council, the lack of community consultation, how CDC got a special contract with the WINZ welfare department when others can't, and how the Council can endorse government policy without the issue being debated first. David Close said that the Council had been working with the Labour Department since 1979 on job schemes under many acronyms and the only difference with the current Community Wage scheme was that nobody had come up with an acronym for it. Anna disagreed, saying it carried sanctions affecting dole payments. The employment manager for CDC, Brigit Lenihan, said that the contract it has with WINZ runs out on June 30. A motion to endorse the existing contract and let it run its course was strongly carried, with only councillors Carole Anderton and Anna Crighton voting against it. They ask that their votes against the endorsement be recorded, while Cr Denis O'Rourke asked that his vote for the endorsement also be recorded.

Betty and Gordon Moore Library opens
Betty and Gordon Moore Library I first saw the building in late June, when it was still necessary to don a hard hat and blue plastic overshoes before venturing inside. As the tour was part of the interview process for my current r“le as subject specialist for mathematics and physics, this was perhaps not the best time for architectural appreciation. However, the impression then formed of a hugely elegant building has remained with me, and my admiration has only increased with greater appreciation of the skilfulness of its synthesis of functionality and style. The readers generally seem to concur in this view, and the second floor is proving particularly popular as a study area, with its light, airy, and tranquil atmosphere. The Moore Library's brief, as the newest dependent library of Cambridge University Library, is to support the University's research activities in mathematics, the physical sciences, and technology. In appropriately 21st century fashion, this is achieved using the `hybrid' library approach; that is, by supplying information with relevant content irrespective of its format. Unrivalled access to print material is provided by housing the entirety of both the monographic and periodicals collections on open shelving, while electronic sources are made available via a large cluster of computer workstations. Although books and computers could be accommodated effectively in some kind of warehouse, such a solution would ignore the needs of readers. In contrast, the real building is carefully designed to provide attractive study and reading areas as well as plenty of storage space.

Beautiful Buildings
Peter Landshoff, Chairman of the Clarkson Road Working Group

This striking photograph was taken by Professor Geoffrey Grimmett who, on a sunny day in December, climbed up the contractor?s crane. On the right in the foreground is the Statistical Laboratory, in which Geoffrey has been working since it was completed in April. The building behind it was occupied by pure mathematicians last August, and the double building at the back is the Märit and Hans Rausing, which was the first building to be completed in January 2000 and is mostly for theoretical physics. The low building on the left has a grass roof. The Centre for Mathematical Sciences is in a residential area and the City planners rightly demanded that the site be as `green' as possible. So we have a pleasant garden on the roof on which we can walk and which allows us easily to pass between the pavilions that surround it. Easy communication was an important feature of the design concept and is so very important for stimulating interactions among mathematical scientists so as to help them to get creative ideas. For this reason the coffee room/cafeteria beneath the grass roof plays a key role in the production of world-leading research. Just beneath the crane, and not seen in the figure, the pavilion that will house the Faulkes Institute for Geometry is nearing completion, and next to it the Betty and Gordon Moore Library. The Library will open on 1 October and will be the University?s new library for the physical sciences, technology and mathematics. The development will be completed by three further pavilions, which are just about to begin construction along the left of the photograph.

Reports produced by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and made available for general distribution fall into three categories: Council Reports, Occasional Papers, and Research Unit Publications. Council reports have been approved by a meeting of Council and constitute official College policy until they are revised or withdrawn. They are given blue covers, and are numbered CR1, CR2, etc. Occasional Papers have not been formally approved by Council, and do not constitute College policy. They are produced by departments or Sections of the College, and their distribution has been authorised by the College's Officers with the aim of providing information or provoking discussion. They are numbered OP1, OP2, etc. This guideline falls into the later category. For full details of reports available and how to obtain them, contact:
