Pope Nicholas V
(TOMMASO PARENTUCELLI) de omni re scibili As soon as the new pontiff was firmly seated on his throne, it was felt that a new spirit had come into the papacy. Now that there was no longer any danger of a fresh outbreak of schism and the Council of Constance had lost all influence, Nicholas could devote himself to the accomplishment of objects which were the aim of his life and had been the means of raising him to his present exalted position. He designed to make Rome the site of splendid monuments, the home of literature and art, the bulwark of the papacy, and the worthy capital of the Christian world . His first care was to strengthen the fortifications, and restore the churches in which the stations were held. Next he took in hand the cleansing and paving of the streets. Rome, once famous for the number and magnificence of its aqueducts, had become almost entirely dependent for its water supply on the Tiber and on wells and cisterns. The "Aqua Virgo", originally constructed by Agrippa Though a patron of art in all its branches, it was literature that obtained his highest favours. His lifelong love of books and his delight in the company of scholars could now be gratified to the full. His immediate predecessors had held the Humanists in suspicion; Nicholas welcomed them to the Vatican as friends. Carried away by his enthusiasm for the New Learning, he overlooked any irregularities in their morals or opinions. He accepted the dedication of a work by Poggio, in which Eugene was assailed as a

Nicholas of Cusa, Alberti and the Architectonics of the Mind Graziella Federici Vescovini " O ne of the single most important ideas emerging from Alberti's concepts is that of the relationship between the artist's ingenuity and his natural and social surroundings, that is, the relationship between the world and the artist's representation of it. It has been noted that this concept resonates singularly with that of Nicholas of Cusa, with whom Alberti shared mutual friendships. The idea of the creativity of the artist's mind, including thoughts on his relationship to the world around him, his capacity to harmoniously reconstruct in accordance with innate proportions (the mind is the locus of proportion, Nicholas wrote) and the beauty of discordant, contradictory Nature, is clearly developed in De Mente and other works anterior to 1450, when Alberti labored over De re aedificatoria. Nicholas' idea of the architectonic vis of the human mind finds a singular consonance with Alberti's vis compositionis , according to which the artist imitates the divine ars in recomposing the contradictions, irregularities and even monstrosities of the world. Neither Nicholas nor Alberti presents the concept of the relationship between the artist and the world around him as something tranquil and objectively given, but rather as a continuing tension. It is a personal conquest by the artist's ingenuity that corrects and upholds the

Ubi est qui natus est rex Iudaeorum?
(Where is he that is born king of the Jews? (1456))
Translated by Clyde Lee Miller , SUNY Stonybrook Dept. of Philosophy
    1. Beyond the points which I have written in other sermons about this feast when I was preaching on this day in various places, I would now like to add an interpretation of its theme. The wise men had no doubts that the king of the Jews was born, but they made inquiries where he might be. That nation had the king of kings "who dwells in heaven" in place of a king and he ruled the same Jewish people through Moses and the prophets. And then he who spoke to the people through the prophets said, "Here I am," and "he was seen upon the earth and conversed [with men]," just as he had predicted that he would come. And so the magi were sure from the star that one who was to come was born and without hesitation asked where he might be. 3. Yet we should nott bother with these conjectures, but notice that the magi were led by a visible sign which went before them in the form of a star. In that sign they were made certain that he was born. From him [comes] all wisdom. He should be sought, recognized, and adored by all the wise men of this world. 4. The words of our theme which must now be expounded, can first be understood "dispositively" in accord with Meister Eckhart's

Nicholas of Cusa’s Sermon for the Feast of Epiphany, 1456
Translated by Clyde Lee Miller Ubi est qui natus est rex Iudaeorum? Where is he that is born king of the Jews? The wise men had no doubts that the king of the Jews was born, but they made inquiries where he might be. That nation had the king of kings "who dwells in heaven" (Ps 2:4) in place of a king. He ruled the Jewish people through Moses and the prophets. Then he who was speaking to the people through the prophets said, "Here I am"(Is 58:9). And "he was seen upon the earth and conversed [with men]" (Bar 3:38), just as he had predicted that he would come. And so the magi, [realizing] from the star that the one who was to come was now born, without hesitation asked where he was. 4. The words of our theme which must now be expounded, can first be understood "dispositively" in accord with Meister Eckhart’s Commentary on John , so that it may be said that the King of the Jews, who is born, is "where" or "place" in the absolute sense. It is just as if the wise had said: "The king who is born is God who is the place of all things." For thus all the wise saw that God is place. For all things are at rest in their place and outside that place all are restless because they are not where they seek to be. Just as Solomon saw that all rivers return "to the place from which they go out" (Ecl 1:7), so all things return to the place from which they have gone out.

    Quotes:
"God, therefore, is the one most simple essence of the entire universe..."
    (p. 120)
... the essence of all essences is each essence in such a way that it is all essences together and none of them individually...
    (p. 108)
God is not something... God is beyond nothing and beyond something... God cannot be called "this" rather than "that"...
    (p. 211)
For God is not the root of contradiction, but God is the simplicity itself prior to every root...
    (p. 212)
... God's simplicity precedes both all that can be named and all that cannot...
    (p. 213) ... neither God nor God's name is to be found in the realm of all creatures and ... God flees from every concept rather than being asserted as something. For that which does not have the condition of a creature is not to be found in the realm of creatures. In the realm of composite things the non-composite is not found... And even though ... composite things are what they are only through the non-composite, yet because it is not composite, it is unknown in the realm of composite things. (p. 213)

Nikolaus Krebs. Theologian who in his De docta ignorantia endorsed the idea of other inhabited worlds: Life, as it exists on Earth, in the form of men, animals and plants, is to be found, let us suppose, in a higher form in the solar and stellar regions. . . . Of the inhabitants then of worlds other than our own we can know less, having no standards by which to appraise them. It may be conjectured that in the Sun there exist solar beings, bright and enlightened denizens, and by nature, more spiritual than such as may inhabit the Moon - who are possibly lunatics . . . He therefore went much further than those scholastics of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, including William of Ockham , Jean Buridan , and William Vorilong , who merely asserted that it would have been possible Bruno , who expounded pluralism , it might be assumed that Nicholas would have seriously upset the Church with his views. In fact, however, he went on to become a Catholic cardinal. See

The Works of Nicholas of Cusa Coming Activities Officers of the Society Membership in the Society Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) was one of the most illustrious figures of the fifteenth century. Trained as a canonist, he first made his mark in political thought. Later, Nicholas became a papal envoy, a cardinal and an original speculative thinker. His ideas of learned ignorance, coincidence of opposites and enfolding / unfolding still attract attention today. The American Cusanus Society, founded in 1983, promotes the study of Nicholas and his times. It holds sessions at the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University in May of each year, and it has held biennial working conferences at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The conferences have yielded two volumes of collected essays, Nicholas of Cusa in Search of God and Wisdom, ed. G. Christianson and T.M. Izbicki (Leiden, 1991) and Nicholas of Cusa on Christ and the Church, ed. G. Christianson and T.M. Izbicki (Leiden, 1996). The Society also publishes a newsletter. It is affiliated with the Institute for Cusanus Research, University of Trier
