Nicholas Krebs took the name Nicholas of Cusa (also known as Nicholas Cusanus 1401-1464) in honor of his birthplace, the small German village of Cusa on the Moselle River. He showed such high promise as a boy that at the age of twelve he received a scholarship to study with the Brothers of the Common Life at Deventer in the Lowlands, a mystical group devoted to experiencing unity with God as inspired by a widely influential book of the time, the Imitation of Christ , authored by one of their fellows. Over the next twelve years he went on to study the arts, philosophy, law, mathematics, the sciences and theology at the universities of Heidelberg, Rome, Colone and Padua, from which he received a doctorate in law. Oct. 1, 2001 A 15 th Century Cardinal with Wisdom for Today Catholic University to Host Oct. 4-7 Symposium on Nicholas of Cusa, Advocate for Peace As an acclaimed scholar, lawyer and philosopher of science, Cardinal Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) also urged peaceful relations between Christians and Muslims, especially when the two groups were at battle in Constantinople. To mark the birth of the cardinal six centuries ago, a four-day symposium on his life and teachings will be held from Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 4 to 7, at several locations on the Catholic University campus. Leading philosophers, theologians, political scientists and historians of science will speak on the timely relevance of Nicholas of Cusa. In light of recent terrorist attacks in the United States, the conference will also address the cardinal’s plea for harmony and understanding as war erupted in the 15 th century. “He considered the unity of faith to be a bond that unites Christians, Muslims and Jews,” says CUA Associate Professor Peter Casarella, one of the symposium’s organizers. “Even with very real differences of rites and beliefs, he argued that harmony could be attained through dialogue and reflection.” The conference touches on many aspects of Nicholas of Cusa’s philosophies and relationships. According to Professor Casarella, the conference will include “sessions on his contribution to the Renaissance theory of perspective, his place in ancient and medieval speculation about the relationship of God and the world, his tantalizingly modern ideas regarding tolerance and consent in the political realm, and his groundbreaking scientific hypotheses regarding the relativity and motion of the earth.”

His family name was Cryftz, which means ‘Krebs’ in contemporary German or ‘crab’ in English; but he was called after his native town Cues on the Moselle, where he was born in 1401. He attended school in Deventer in the Netherlands run by the Brethren of the Common Life, whose so-called modern way of piety ( devotio moderna ) influenced him deeply. He then studied law at Heidelberg Padua , and Cologne , becoming an expert in canon law. Having practiced law for several years, he studied theology and became a priest. He attended the Council of Basel in 1432 in the name of his bishop. Originally a supporter of Conciliarism, he entered the service of Pope Eugenius IV in 1437 because he considered that only this Pope could guarantee the unity of the church at that time. Nicholas of Cusa 1401-1464 German Philosopher Nicholas of Cusa is remarkable for his modern views about science. In the 15th century, astronomy was strongly influenced by the views Aristotle and Ptolemy. These highly respected authorities held that the universe rotated around the earth and that the orbits of the heavenly bodies circles or circles within circles. Long before Copernicus proposed that the earth rotated around the sun and Kepler proposed that planets had elliptical orbits, Nicholas suggested that the motion of the universe was not centered on the earth and that celestial bodies were not necessarily circular in form or motion. Nicholas was one of the first advocates of experimental science. His careful study of plant growth, in which he showed that plants absorb nourishment from the air, is the first modern biological experiment. He wrote a book on the use of the balance and provided the first experimental evidence that air has weight. His scientific interests also included mathematics, diagnostic medicine, and applied science. Nicholas' father was a boatman on the Moselle river. Despite his humble origins, he was able to study arts, philosophy, law, mathematics, the sciences, and theology. He studied at Heidelberg and Cologne in Germany, at Deventer, in the Netherlands, and in Padua and Rome in Italy. He was ordained a priest and rose to the rank of bishop and cardinal. He served on a commission to Constantinople seeking the reunion of the Eastern and Western Christian churches.
