D'Alembert's Principle ALEMBERT, Jean le Rond d' Paris, David, 1743 4to (220 x 170 mm), with four folding engraved plates; lightly browned and foxed; a good copy in contemporary calf, rebacked retaining original spine. £5750
First edition in this 'landmark in the history of mechanics', containing the enunciation of what is now known as d'Alembert's principle. This is the method of reducing the laws of the motion of bodies to situations of static equilibrium as a technique for dynamic analysis ('the internal forces of inertia must be equal and opposite to the forces that produce the acceleration'). It is based on the three laws of motion that d'Alembert presents earlier in this work, the law of inertia, the parallelogram of motion, and the law of equilibrium and the conservation of momentum; 'he actually assumed the conservation of momentum and defined mass accordingly. This fact was what made his work a mathematical physics rather than simply mathematics' (DSB). This work was the foundation for Lagrange's classic book on analytical mechanics which codified the laws governing the motions of any systems of bodies.
D'Alembert is also credited with laying to rest, in the Traité, the vis viva controversy by investigating its philosophical basis and dismissing its ontological reality. 'In this way d'Alembert was clearly a precursor of positivistic science' (ibid).

Jean Le Rond d'Alembert: Preliminary Discourse to the Encyclopedia of Diderot
Why have people come to despise the mechanical arts? What is their main advantage over the liberal arts (that is, more intellectual arts)? The mechanical arts depend on manual operation and are enslaved, if I may be permitted the term, to a species of routine, and so are left to those men whom prejudice places within the lowest classes. Poverty has driven these men to apply themselves to such work more often than taste or native genius drew them towards it, and for this reason these arts have come to be despised, so much does poverty darken what accompanies it. On the other hand, the free operations of the intellect (1) The contempt shown to the mechanical arts seems to have been influenced in part by their inventors. The names of these great benefactors of the human race are almost entirely unknown, whereas the history of its destroyers, that is to say, its conquerors, is known by everyone. Even so, it is perhaps among the artisans that one should go to find the most admirable proofs of the sagacity, the patience, and the resources of the intellect. I admit that the greater part of the arts have been invented little by little and that it has taken a very long period of centuries in order to bring watches, for example, to the point of perfection that we see. But is it not the same for the sciences?

    Jean-le-Rond D'Alembert
Jean-le-Rond D'Alembert was born at Paris on November 16, 1717, and died there on October 29, 1783. He was the illegitimate child of the chevalier Destouches. Being abandoned by his mother on the steps of the little church of St. Jean-le-Rond, which then nestled under the great porch of Notre-Dame, he was taken to the parish commissary, who, following the usual practice in such cases, gave him the Christian name of Jean-le-Rond; I do not know by what authority he subsequently assumed the right to prefix de to his name. He was boarded out by the parish with the wife of a glazier in a small way of business who lived near the cathedral, and here he found a real home, though a humble one. His father appears to have looked after him, and paid for his going to a school where he obtained a fair mathematical education.
An essay written by him in 1738 on the integral calculus, and another in 1740 on ''ducks and drakes'' or ricochets, attracted some attention, and in the same year he was elected a member of the French Academy; this was probably due to the influence of his father, It is to his credit that he absolutely refused to leave his adopted mother, with whom he continued to live until her death in 1757. It cannot be said that she sympathised with his success, for at the height of his fame she remonstrated with him for wasting his talents on such work: ''Vous ne serez jamais qu'un philosophe,'' said she, ''et qu'est-ce qu'un philosophe? c'est un fou que se tourmente pendant sa vie, pour qu'on parle de lui lorsqu'il n'y sera plus.''
