Aristotle http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/PictDisplay/Aristotle.html
400 BC – 300 BC Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) studied matter, change, movement, space, position, and time over his lifetime and wrote many philosophical and metaphysical books including Physica (Kuhn 10). Aristotle thought that the motion of bodies held back understanding of gravitation for a long time. He believed that force could only be applied by contact, a force from a distance was impossible, and in order for a body to remain in uniform motion a constant force was needed (123). Nicole Oresme http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/PictDisplay/Oresme.html
1300 AD – 1400 AD Jean Buridan (? – 1358) wrote two commentaries on De Caelo , a natural philosophy book by Aristotle, which dealt with the universe, the planets, and sublunar motion (the motion of heavy and light objects). The first commentary explained exactly what Aristotle meant in the book and the second described a set of difficult problems and then their solution. Buridan included problems about whether the planets moved without friction, whether the earth is at rest in the center of the universe and what is the cause of the tides (119-120). Nicole Oresme (1323 – 1382) opposed the theory of the Earth being stationary as proposed by Aristotle and he even taught about the motion of the Earth. This was 200 years before Copernicus would popularize the notion. However, Oresme later rejected his own ideas.

The Left Handed and Famous If the left side of your brain controls the right side of your body, and the right side of your brain controls the left side of your body, then left-handed people must be the only ones in their right minds. " - W.C. Fields In current society, "handedness" is simply defined as the hand you use to write with, but scientists measure handedness in many ways. Scientists will also use measures of grip strengh, hand preference in other tasks, and hand speed in manual tasks.

All the eminent Greek mathematicians are represented in early or significant editions: Pythagoras, with two editions of Hierocles’ commentary on his Carmina Aurea , printed by Bartholomaeus de Valdezoccho (Padua, 1474) and Arnold Pannartz (Rome, 1475); Aristotle, with the first edition of the complete works in Greek (Aldus, Venice, 1495-98); Euclid, with copies of the first edition of the Elements , printed by Ratdolt in a Latin translation (Venice, 1482), the first edition of the Greek text printed by Hervagius (Basel, 1533), and the first English translation by Sir Henry Billingsley (1570); and Archimedes, with the first edition by Hervagius (Basel, 1544). Boethius made Latin redactions of a number of Greek scientific writings in around 500 AD. The Library has over fifty editions of his works, the earliest being the De Consolatione Philosophiae (Savigliano, 1470).

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION SYMBOLS
Plus (+) and minus (-). Nicole d' Oresme (1323-1382) may have used a figure which looks like a plus symbol as an abbreviation for the Latin et (meaning "and") in Algorismus proportionum, believed to have been written between 1356 and 1361. The symbol appears in a manuscript of this work believed to have been written in the fourteenth century, but perhaps by a copyist and not Oresme himself. The symbol appears, for example, in the sentence: "Primi numeri sesquiterti sunt .4. et .3., et primi numeri sev termini sesquialtere sunt .3. et .2." [Dic Sonneveld]. The plus symbol as an abbreviation for the Latin et , though appearing with the downward stroke not quite vertical, was found in a manuscript dated 1417 (Cajori). The + and - symbols first appeared in print in Mercantile Arithmetic or , by Johannes Widmann (born c. 1460), published in Leipzig in 1489. However, they referred not to addition or subtraction or to positive or negative numbers, but to surpluses and deficits in business problems (Cajori vol. 1, page 128). Here is an image of the first use in print of the + and - signs

Macherey a approuvée.
