Innovative Engineers of Renaissance - Leonardo Leonardo Leonardo da Vinci is celebrated as the inventor of extraordinary machines and mechanical devices that entered the common heritage of technical culture only several centuries after his death.
However, a close examination of the history of technology from the late fourteenth century to the end of the fifteenth century reveals that the "Leonardo phenomenon" was the logical outcome of a development of engineering and technical skills to which other talented figures contributed as well.

http://www.vebjorn-sand.com/
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 500 Years After It Was Designed, Leonardo da Vinci's Bridge Goes UP! Norwegian artist, Vebjørn Sand, had a vision. He would build the "Golden Horn" bridge Leonardo da Vinci designed in 1502 but never built. On October 31, 2001, the ambitious project was unveiled spanning E-18, the highway between Oslo, Norway and Sweden in the township of Ås. It will stand as an historical monument to both the master artist of the Renaissance and the persistence of Norway's hottest contemporary artist. The unveiling of the Leonardo Bridge was presided over by Norway's Queen Sonja and attended by a large crowd braving stormy weather to witness the event. The project has intrigued architects for 40 years since its rediscovery in a set of Leonardo's documents in the late 1950's. In 1995, Vebjørn Sand, a painter also famous in Norway for his public projects, saw an exhibition of Leonardo's project designs including a tiny drawing of a sweeping pressed-bow bridge. He felt he was unearthing a lost treasure. Permanently smitten with the "eternal beauty" of the design, he took the idea of building the bridge immediately to the Norwegian Transportation Ministry. It took many years working with various architects and engineers to come up with a workable plan.
Vebjørn Sand hopes to build a Leonardo-style bridge on every continent. Sand sees the traditions of the Renaissance reinvigorating contemporary public art. Says Sand, "This (kind of) collaboration gives us insight into the function of the artist in public space. When (the artist), engineers, architects, businessmen and governmental departments work towards the same artistic goal, it creates a synergy in many different environments."

Browse Powells Art Books Leonardo Da Vinci: The Complete Paintings by Pietro C. Marani, Leonardo In this magnificent book, Pietro Marani, the director of the project to restore Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, presents all the artist's known paintings. The history and significance of each are analyzed at length: we read, for example, that "from a very early date, Mona Lisa was considered among Leonardo's most extraordinary accomplishments, one that made every other artist 'tremble and lose heart.'" .... From its enigmatic cover (the lips of the artist's exquisite portrait of Ginevra de' Benci) to its extensive bibliography, Leonardo da Vinci comes the closest this reviewer has seen to being the ultimate art book. 100. Leonardo In France
leonardo da vinci's last years at the court of the French King in the Loire Valley, France are described. Photographs are included on each page.
http://geocities.com/leonardo_in_france/
This site tells the story of the last few years of the life of Leonardo da Vinci spent in France at the town of Amboise in the Loire Valley. These were among the happiest years of his life.
The site shows images of the house where Leonardo lived during this time and also photos of the Royal Castle at Amboise and of the town.
Leonardo died at Amboise on 2 May 1519. During the Revolution the church where he was buried was destroyed and it is not completely certain where his remains now lie. However, some believe that his bones were recovered and that they are now located in the Chapel of St Hubert at Amboise.
The site also shows the town of Amboise as it is today - a major centre of tourism in the region. Finally, the site provides details on books for sale on the subject of Leonardo and the Renaissance plus travel books on France and of the Loire.
"Celestial influences may shower extraordinary gifts on certain human beings, which is an effect of nature; but there is something supernatural in the accumulation in one individual of so much beauty, grace and might."
Vasari, Lives of the Artists
