Many people know that the Roman Catholic Church once waged a long and
bitter war on science, and on astronomy in particular. But that seemingly well-established fact of history, it turns out, is wrong. While it is true that the church condemned Galileo, new research shows that centuries of oversimplifications have concealed how hard Rome worked to amass astronomical tools, measurements, tests and lore.

Florence 1519 - 1574 Cosimo I was the son of Giovanni delle Bande Nere (see Medici family ). He was created Duke of Florence in 1537, and Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1569. Under his rule the Botanical Gardens of both Pisa and Florence were founded. He was the author of cosmographical studies and gave to the monk Egnatio Danti the task of producing geographical maps of all (then) known territories. The collection of scientific wonders that was begun by him forms the original nucleus of the Medicean collection , now preserved on the first floor of the Museo Next Previous Index ... Italiano

(Fletcher). Main coordinators were J. Babicz, H. Ostromecka, K. Buczek, E. Campbell, C. Koeman, A. Smet, E. Pognon, F. Grenacher. Attendance figures vary from 75 from 18 countries to 100 from 20 countries. Conference languages were English, French, German, Russian, The theme was the effect of Copernicus's ideas on post-16th century cartography, but papers actually varied widely over European cartography of the last 500 years.
