Agassiz, Jean Louis [1807 - 1873]
Agassiz was a Swiss born geologist and zoologist. He emigrated to the United States in 1846 and was a professor of natural history at Harvard University from 1847-73. He developed the novel theory that a previous ice age once engulfed the entire surface of the earth and supposedly this ice age separated the two "creation events" of god. Determined to prove himself right, Agassiz spent time in the Amazon Basin trying to find proof that glaciers were once there. He was not successful.
Influence
Charles Darwin and Louis Agassiz started a correspondence in the mid-1840's and soon became good friends. When Darwin was thinking about starting a comprehensive study of barnacles in 1846, Agassiz wrote to Darwin that such research was in great demand and he should by all means pursue it. Indeed, when Agassiz heard that Darwin was looking for different varieties of barnacles to study he sent him a huge crate full of specimens. When "Origin of Species" was published in 1859, Darwin sent Agassiz a complimentary 1st edition. Agassiz was not very impressed with Darwin's theory of natural selection, being convinced rather that each species was a separate divine creation ordained by god. During the late 1800's Agassiz became one of the most influential opponents of evolutionary theory in the United States.

Darwin was well aware that there were major inconsistencies in his 1859 theory of the origin of species by natural selection and he spent the rest of his life attempting to resolve them. For eight years prior to his death in 1882 it is likely that, apart from his immediate family, he spent more time discussing these inconsistencies with his young Canadian research associate, George John Romanes, than anyone e lse. In 1886 Romanes presented a theory of the origin of species by “physiological selection” to the Linnean Society. He claimed to have resolved the inconsistencies, but invoked abstract elements (e.g. “a peculiarity of the reproductive system”), which were incomprehensible to his Victorian contemporaries. He was strongly attacked by the elder statesmen of science - Wallace and Huxley - and died of a brain tumour at age 46 in 1894. Results of recent research on various genome projects have led to a new reinterpretation of Darwin’s theory that has much in common with that of Romanes (see The Origin of Species, Revisited.

Deep Seas Benthic Biology Group Projects - The Darwin Mounds
Located at a depth of about 1000m in the north-east corner of the Rockall Trough, immediately south of the Wyville-Thomson Ridge (see figure above), the comparatively small carbonate 'Darwin Mounds' cover an area of approximately 100 km2 and contain some hundreds of mounds. Each of the mounds is approximately 100m in diameter and 5m high. Their sandy construction suggests that they are sand volcanoes - the result of fluidised sand 'de-watering', possibly as a result of slumping on the SW side of the Wyville Thomson ridge. Above: The Darwin Mounds, west and east fields (see enlarged figures below) A second group of mounds, the east field was discovered in 1999 be SOC scientists carrying out an environmental survey for the UK Department of Trade and Industry.
The tops of the mounds are home to live colonies of the deep-water coral species Lophelia pertusa and the biological community that they support. Vulnerable to the effects of deep-water trawling , Lophelia thickets on the Darwin Mounds east are already showing seabed marks left by crossing trawlers, leaving a scattering of dead coral fragments in the wake.

George Gaylord Simpson: Natural Selection and the Fossil Record
As one of the founders of the " modern synthesis " of evolution, paleontologist George Gaylord Simpson argued that the fossil record supports Darwin's theory that natural selection acting on random variation in a population is the driving force behind evolution. Simpson was among the first to use mathematical methods in paleontology , and he also took into account newly discovered genetic evidence for evolution in his study of paleontology. In his 1944 book, Tempo and Mode in Evolution , Simpson divided evolutionary change into "tempo," the rate of change, and "mode," the manner or pattern of change, with tempo being a basic factor of mode. Simpson saw paleontology, revealing the long history of life on earth, as a unique field through which to study the history of evolution. Evolution Since Darwin Backgrounder George Gaylord Simpson: Natural Selection and the Fossil Record: The early part of the twentieth century saw evolutionary theory embattled by disagreements over Darwin's emphasis on natural selection . The then-newly rediscovered work of Gregor Mendel in the nineteenth century was an uncomfortable fit with evolution, as many scientists saw it. They weren't at all certain that natural populations contained enough
