Abhidharma Kosa Bhasyam. By Vasubandhu. Translated into English by Leo M. Pruden from Louis de La Vallee Poussin's French rendering of the Sanskrit. Berkeley, Calif.: Asian Humanities Press, 1988-90. Hardcover edition in four volumes: Pp. lxii + 1428. ISBN 0895819139, US $300.00. Reviewed by Dharmamitra. Leo M. Pruden's landmark translation of Vasubandhu's encyclopedic treatment of the Abhidharma from the French of Louis de La Vallee Poussin is a stunningly meticulous work of scholarship. In the marvelous setting of a high-quality hardcover edition, it displays Professor Pruden's uncompromising dedication to bringing a complete, accurate and well-annotated rendering of the crown jewel of Abhidharma compilations into English. For those who are unfamiliar with the significance of the Abhidharma, it is the systematic delineation of Buddhist philosophical tenets. In aggregate, it forms one of the three collections comprising the three-fold Buddhist canon known as the Tripi.taka . The importance of this work of Vasubandhu lies a) in its encyclopedic completeness; and b) in its exposition of the common philosophical ground shared by both the Southern and Northern traditions of Buddhism. It is a work which, though dedicated primarily to material most readily associated with the fundamental teachings of Southern-tradition Buddhism, has always been held in the highest esteem in Chinese and Tibetan traditions as well. This work is graced by a 60-page introduction to Abhidharma written by Professor Pruden entitled

Percentages of Prime Numbers
Date: 01/31/99 at 19:00:49 From: Denise Grayson Subject: Percentages of prime numbers I am an algebra II student, and I am doing a science fair project in which I am observing the percentages of primes. I have written a computer program that finds prime numbers and the percentage of them. Example: There are 4 prime numbers between 1 and 10, which is 40%. I print out a statement like this at every power of 10. I know that there are an infinite number of primes, and I was wondering if the percentage of primes will continue to decrease as you increase the span of your search, until you reach a certain point at which this percent will remain constant for the rest of infinity. I was wondering if you knew anything about past research on this subject, or if you could give me some suggestions on where to look. Thank you very much, Denise Grayson http://www.math.umu.se/~jwi/articles/primenumberthm/primenumberthm.html Jacques Salomon Hadamard - MacTutor Math History Archive http://history.math.csusb.edu/Mathematicians/Hadamard.html

Good question. It's one mathematicians are still trying to answer. The simplest method was developed by Eratosthenes in the 3rd century B.C. Here's how it works: Suppose we want to find all the prime numbers between 1 and 64. We write out a table of these numbers, and proceed as follows. 2 is the first integer greater than 1, so it is obviously prime. We now cross out all multiples of two. The next number that we haven't crossed out is 3. We circle it and cross out all its multiples. The next non-crossed-out number is 5, so we circle it and cross out all its multiples. We only have to do this for all numbers less than the square root of our upper limit (in this case sqrt(64)=8) since any composite number in the table must have at least one factor less than the square root of the upper limit. What's left after this process of elimination is all the prime numbers between 1 and 64. Unfortunately, this method is rather time-consuming when the numbers you are looking for are much larger.

9.3.1 Discovering the Technical Coefficients of Production
The method of "material balances" has been the most common way of gathering information in the actual practice of central planning, though it is least interesting from our point of view, because irrespective of some of its practical advantages, it is demonstrably inefficient. Various iterative procedures involving trial prices, trial quantities, and a gradient search are more theoretically interesting because they can provide sufficient information for the Central Planning Board to calculate an efficient plan under specified conditions, assuming the Central Planning Board knows the social welfare function. We now consider these methods in turn.
Material Balances. As Benjamin Ward explains:
The planning bureau starts with a known bill of final demands for each sector. Its task is to find a bill of gross outputs for each sector which is consistent with this bill of final demands and with the production technology. The procedure is as follows: 1. The bureau reports to each sector its corresponding final demand.
