Who is Garrett A. Morgan 1877-1963?
Garrett Augustus Morgan was born in 1877 in Paris, Kentucky. He dropped out of school at the age of 14 and moved to Cleveland Ohio where he began working at a sewing-machine shop. He became interested in the improvement of machines and designed a belt fastener for the sewing machine, which he sold for $150. In 1909, Morgan opened a clothing manufacturing company and continued to invent new devices. Morgan was interested in workers’ safety. He invented a safety hood, called an “inhalator,” which he patented in 1912 (patent #1,113,675). This device was an early version of the gas mask. He won the grand prize for the invention in 1914 at the second International Exposition of Safety and Sanitation. bodyOffer(16772) Morgan did not let prejudice against him stop his efforts to invent devices to make the world a safer place. In 1920, the use of the automobiles increased, causing traffic congestion in many of the large U.S. cities. In 1923, Morgan designed and patented a traffic signal (patent #1,475,024). The signal consisted of a tall post with movable arms that monitored and controlled traffic. The post rotated and the arms moved up. The signal contained lights that flashed the words ”stop” and “go.” The posts used batteries and electricity from overhead wires. A set of bells signaled that the post was changing direction. Morgan sold the rights to his traffic signal patent to the General Electric Company. Many modern day traffic signals still incorporate the features of Morgan’s early invention.

The Family of William L. Augustus Whitten and Lucinda Allman
According to Toni Brahier: "William L. Augustus Whitten was the son of Littleton Whitten and his second wife, Espey Cornelia Ruark. From the records in Morgan County, [Georgia] and the Federal Census Records, it appears that he and his brother, Berry A. Whitten, were overseers for their grandfather, Lemuel C. Ruark before the Civil War. William served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, along with many of his cousins in the Whitten, Allman and Ruark families. William married Lucinda Catherine Allman in Madison, Morgan County, Georgia. Lucinda was the daughter of James Morgan Allman, Jr. and his wife, Mary Catherine Marshall. She was named the same as her father's sister, which has caused some confusion. Although it is not known where they are buried, it is believed to be either the Allman Cemetery near the Ruark Cemetery, or in the Allman/Beal Cemetery on Beaver Dam Road."

Garrett Augustus Morgan, was an African-American businessman and inventor. A practical man of humble beginnings, Morgan devoted his life to creating practical solutions that made the lives of others safer and more convenient. Best known for his invention of the automatic traffic signal, that improved safety on America’s roadways. Morgan’s technology was the basis for modern traffic signal systems and was an early example of what is known today as Intelligent Transportation Systems. His automatic traffic signal stands as a significant contribution in the evolution of traffic management. His lifetime of achievements is a model of dedication to public service, public safety, and technological innovation. Garret Augustus Morgan, Sr. was the seventh of eleven children born to former slaves in 1877. Morgan’s early life consisted of work on the family farm and school. At fourteen, Garrett moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Initially, he worked as a handyman. Garrett used a portion of his earnings to pay for a tutor—continuing his education in English grammar.

Garrett Augustus Morgan by Ashley Stringfield Dominique Hughes , and Julia Haile Who is Garrett Morgan? you may ask. That is what we are here to tell you. Garrett Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky, on March 4,1877. He was the seventh of eleven children. At the age of 14 Garrett moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, to find work. While there he found his first job as a sewing machine mechanic. "Over the years, Morgan held similar positions with other sewing machine companies." In 1901 he invented the belt fastner for the sewing machine which he sold and made a profit of $50. This device helped materials from becoming scorched by the heat. "Over the years this invention became very sucessful. "In 1907 Garrett opened his own store that sold repaired sewing machines. That following year Garrett was able to buy a home and move his mother to Cleveland. On August 19, 1912, Garrett built the breathing device which helped people to breathe underwater. For this invention Garrett was given U.S. patent 1,113,675. Also he invented the automatic traffic light so it wouldn't be such comotion and sold it to the electric service company for $40,000. Eight years later on July 26,1963, he died from natural causes and then five years later his wife died.

Gas Mask (Click image for larger view) Garrett Morgan was an inventor and businessman from Cleveland, who invented a device called the Morgan safety hood and smoke protector in 1914. On July 25, 1916, Garrett Morgan made national news for using his gas mask to rescue 32 men trapped during an explosion in an underground tunnel 250 feet beneath Lake Erie. Morgan and a team of volunteers donned the new "gas masks" and went to the rescue. After the rescue, Morgan's company received requests from fire departments around the country who wished to purchase the new masks. The Morgan gas mask was later refined for use by U.S. Army during World War I. In 1914, Garrett Morgan was awarded a patent for a Safety Hood and Smoke Protector. Two years later, a refined model of his early gas mask won a gold medal at the International Exposition of Sanitation and Safety, and another gold medal from the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

Sua conferência inaugural teve por título "On the study of mathematics". Em 1831 deixou a cadeira, mas em 1836 foi novamente chamado, permanecendo até 1866.
