DEDEKIND RIHARD ( Richard Dedekind ) [tern (Moritz Abraham Stern , 1807-1894), teoretièar brojeva, zatim Gaus i fizièar Veber (Wilhelm Eduard Weber, 1804-1891). Dedekind postaje 1862. profesor Tehnièke visoke škole u Braunšvajgu, gde ostaje do smrti. Inspirisan petom knjigom Euklidovih Elemenata objavljuje 1872. kratku brošuru

TODO List Dedekind cuts (Definition) The purpose of Dedekind cuts is to provide a sound logical foundation for the real number system. Dedekind's motivation behind this project is to notice that a real number , intuitively, is completely determined by the rationals strictly smaller than and those strictly larger than . Concerning the completeness or continuity of the real line, Dedekind notes in [ ] that If all points of the straight line fall into two classes such that every point of the first class lies to the left of every point of the second class, then there exists one and only one point which produces this division of all points into two classes, this severing of the straight line into two portions. Dedekind defines a point to produce the division of the real line if this point is either the least or greatest element of either one of the classes mentioned above. He further notes that the completeness property, as he just phrased it, is deficient in the rationals, which motivates the definition of reals as

Early Life
Richard Dedekind was born into the life of research and experimental theory. His father was a professor at the Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick. His mother was the daughter of a professor, also working at the Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick. He was the youngest of four children and never married. Although he never married he still had the company of the opposite sex. He lived with one of his sisters, who also never married, for most of his adult life. He attended school throughout his child hood at Brunswick. At the age of seven Richard's interest was not in the field of Mathematics. Soon he attended the school of Martino-Catherineum which was a good school for the study of physics and chemistry. However Richard's soon took a disliking to the fields of physics because of the imprecise logical structure and soon he returned to the field of Mathematics. Schooling and mid-life In 1850 Dedekind attended his first courses given by Gauss on the subject of least squares: ...fifty years later Dedekind remembered the lectures as the most beautiful he had ever heard, writing that he had followed Gauss with constantly increasing interest and that he could not forget the experience.

Richard Dedekind (1831-1916):

(Alphabetically) Next Welcome page Richard Dedekind 's major contribution was a redefinition of irrational numbers in terms of Dedekind cuts. He introduced the notion of an ideal which is fundamental to ring theory. Gauss His major contribution was a major redefinition of irrational numbers in terms of Dedekind cuts. He published this in Stetigkeit und Irrationale Zahlen in 1872. His analysis of the nature of number and mathematical induction, including the definition of finite and infinite sets and his work in number theory, particularly in algebraic number fields, is of major importance. In 1874 he met Cantor while on holiday in Interlaken and was sympathetic to his set theory. Among his most notable contributions to mathematics were his editions of the collected works of Peter Dirichlet , Carl Gauss , and Georg Riemann . Dedekind's study of Dirichlet 's work led to his own study of algebraic number fields, as well as his introduction of ideals.
