Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. British film critic, writer, poet, librettist, screenwriter. Full name: Paul Edward Dehn. His parents were Helen and Frederick Dehn. He was James Agate's godson. He went to Shrewsbury School and Brasenose College, Oxford University. From 1936 to 1939 he was a film critic and columnist for the Sunday Referee During the Second World War he served as a major in the Special Forces from 1939 to 1945. From 1945 to 1953 he was a film critic for the Sunday Chronicle In 1949/50 he met the composer James Bernard with whom he started a professional relationship but who also became his life partner. Paul Dehn asked James Bernard to collaborate with him on the original screen story for the Boulting Brothers film Seven Days To Noon , (1950). For this Paul Dehn and Jame Bernard shared the 1952 Academy Award for the Best Writing, Motion Picture Story. He was a film critic for the News Chronicle from 1954 to 1960, and for the

Seminar "Das 3. Problem von Hilbert"
(auch für Lehramtskandidaten)
Wintersemester 2002/03

The Dehn Invariant
As I said in the previous section, Hilbert's student Max Dehn provided a solution to Hilbert's 3rd Problem with these two tetrahedra:
In order to show that these two tetrahedra are an acceptable counterexample, Dehn needed to show that they have the same volume but are not scissors congruent. It is easy to see that they have the same volume, . The more difficult part is to show that they are not scissors congruent. To do this, Dehn introduced an invariant (which is now known as the Dehn invariant ) and proved the following result: Theorem (Dehn) If two tetrahedra have different Dehn invariants, then they are not scissors congruent. So how do we calculate the Dehn invariant? Well, first we need to define a few things. Let be an edge of a polyhedron . Let be the length of edge , and let be the dihedral angle at in radians; that is, let

Hilbert's 3rd Problem
You might next ask if these results also hold for spherical geometry and hyperbolic geometry as well. The two-dimensional analog was proved for both spherical geometry and hyperbolic geometry in the 19th century, before Hilbert posed the problem for three-dimensional euclidean geometry. The three dimensional case for spherical geometry and hyperbolic geometry, however, is still an open problem. I am working on some problems related to the hyperbolic, three-dimensional case. As I said earlier, the next section, "The Dehn Invariant", shows why Dehn's counterexample actually is a counterexample. Another section, "The Lobachevsky Function", deals with a function that comes up sometimes when computing volumes in hyperbolic 3-space. The section called "The Mysterious Theta" is about the problem I am working on, which involves the Lobachevsky function.
