Math 6843 Geometric Group Theory Spring 2000
Instructor: Noel Brady
Announcement
Geometric group theory has its origins in the work of Max Dehn [D] who first formulated the word and isomorphism problems for infinite groups and provided a beautiful solution to the word problem for the fundamental groups of closed hyperbolic surfaces. There have been two main influences this century which have shaped modern geometric group theory. The first influence came from the combinatorial and topological techniques of 3-manifold theory, a lot of which were developed and carried over by John Stallings [S]. The second major influence, pioneered by Mikhael Gromov [G1], [G2] and [G3], involves studying infinite groups as geometric objects. One of Gromov's key contributions in this area is the development of the concept of large scale (or coarse) hyperbolicity, and the realization that the large scale phenomena associated with negative curvature have some dramatic consequences in group theory. In the fall course we focused primarily on the topological/combinatorial point of view. This semester we shall develop the (coarse) geometry viewpoint. The main theme of this course will be

Click to Enlarge ORIGINAL OIL ON CANVAS - This wonderful oil on canvas shows Victorian woman at leisure. It depicts four young women in Victorian dress playing a game in which the lady in the center is blindfolded. They are full-length figures of the women on a dark background. The dimensions are: 40-1/4 x 30 inches canvas size; and 53 x 43 inches framed. The ornate, gilt wood frame is approximately 7 inches wide. It appears to be from the late 19th or early 20th century. There is no visible signature. The painting is in very good condition. Note the old, patched linen or canvas backing rather than paper. The frame is in very good condition except for a broken area at the left lower corner (right corner if facing the painting). The piece is broken but still attached.

The Effects of Ballet Dancing on the Cardiorespiratory Fitness of Middle-Aged Adults Sheyi Ojofeitimi Maximal oxygen intake (VO max) per unit of body weight is the standard international measure of cardiorespiratory fitness (Shepard et al. 1968). It is the product of maximal cardiac output and maximal arteriovenous oxygen difference (a-v O D). Research shows that the endurance capacity of humans, as measured by VO max, declines throughout adult life (Higginbotham et al. 1986; Steinhaus et al. 1990; Ogawa et al. 1992). This decline is accelerated in individuals with sedentary lifestyles. For example, age-related decline in V0 max is about 5% per decade in physically active individuals, and almost 10% in sedentary individuals (Steinhaus et al. 1990). General consensus among investigators is that physical training improves VO max. Studies show that both older men and older women endurance athletes are capable of retaining high levels of maximal aerobic power. Additionally, the physiological stimulus imposed by vigorous endurance exercise training might increase VO The levels of VO max observed in older male athletes were approximately twice as great as that of untrained peers (Rogers 1990).

Dissection

Any two rectilinear figures with equal area can be dissected into a finite number of pieces to form each other. This is the Wallace-Bolyai-gerwein theorem . For minimal dissections of a triangle pentagon , and octagon into a square , see Stewart (1987, pp. 169-170) and Ball and Coxeter (1987, pp. 89-91). The triangle to square dissection ( haberdasher's problem ) is particularly interesting because it can be built from hinged pieces which can be folded and unfolded to yield the two shapes (Gardner 1961; Stewart 1987, p. 169; Pappas 1989; Steinhaus 1999, pp. 3-4; Wells 1991, pp. 61-62). Laczkovich (1988) proved that the circle can be squared in a finite number of dissections ( ). Furthermore, any shape whose boundary is composed of smoothly curving pieces can be dissected into a square The situation becomes considerably more difficult moving from two dimensions to three dimensions. In general, a polyhedron cannot be dissected into other polyhedra of a specified type. A cube can be dissected into cubes , where n is any integer . In 1900, Dehn proved that not every

In 1900, Dehn proved that not every Prism can be dissected into a Tetrahedron (Lenhard 1962, Ball and Coxeter 1987) The third of Hilbert problems asks for the determination of two Tetrahedra which cannot be decomposed into congruent Tetrahedra directly or by adjoining congruent Tetrahedra . Max Dehn showed this could not be done in 1902, and W. F. Kagon obtained the same result independently in 1903. A quantity growing out of Dehn's work which can be used to analyze the possibility of performing a given solid dissection is the Dehn Invariant .

Solving Linear Differential-like Equations
by Luis Verde-Star
verde@xanum.uam.mx

We present a method for the solution of linear functional equations involving an operator that behaves like differentiation in a certain linear algebraic sense. Such equations include a large class of linear difference and differential equations with constant or variable coefficients. The basic ideas are presented first in the case of linear differential equations with constant coefficients. One-sided inverses of differential operators are obtained by means of a convolution product that is defined algebraically on the vector space of exponential polynomials. We show that the same constructions can be done in an abstract linear space. We use only basic concepts and results from linear algebra and some properties of polynomials and rational functions. Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.
