To begin with, it grew out of a combination of European and African influences, harmony and rhythm respectively. Appropriate instruments (brass saxhorns as well as saxophones) were invented in the 19th century by the Belgian Adolphe Sax. About half of the roots can be considered European. It was brewed in America by African Americans, and it matured in mixed blood there. Eventually, it came full circle and bounced back to Europe full of vim and vigor. So where are we and what next? The following is a chapter from "The Oxford Companion To Jazz" published by Oxford University Press and edited by Bill Kirchner. Americans taught the Europeans how to play it. Once they learned, they distilled and added to it until they felt that they no longer needed Americans hanging around taking their gigs. From the reverse angle, Americans no longer particularly wanted to hang around Europe either. As Europe grew richer it became more expensive; there were more taxes and they were harder to avoid. And the home playing field began to level out for African Americans.

Thanks to Sandra Kroupa , Book Arts Librarian for the research and writing of the inaugural article, 19th Century Color Lithographs of Native Americans History of the Indian tribes of North America, with biographical sketches and anecdotes of the principal chiefs. Embellished with one hundred and twenty portraits, from the Indian gallery in the Department of war, at Washington. By Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall. Philadelphia, E. C. Biddle, 1836-1844. Nesouaquoit, or the Bear in the Forks of a Tree of the Sauk and Fox nation painted by Charles Bird King in 1837. Nesouaquoit was a Fox chief who had a reputation for his hatred of alcohol and tobacco and was known for destroying barrels of whiskey and driving traders from his land. In 1837 he went to Washington D. C. to lay claim to money owed to the tribe by the government. In 1815 his tribe signed a treaty that gave them an annual annuity but they never saw a cent. In 1837 Nesouaquoit borrowed money to go to Washington to lay his claim but the tribe never got any money as a result of the visit.

WELCOME TO SERIAL-DESIGN
Where design is limited only by the human mind
As you will notice we are going through some changes here. It may just take awhile but we will get there. The end goal being an On-Line Design Resource put together from contributions by people who have a great love of the subject matter. You the readers. Of course no limit can be placed on Design , it's boundaries are endless just like the human mind. As humans are innovative in its application. So therefore no limits will be applied as long as it satisfies the basic formula or definition of design. The following is as good as any I have seen.
It may be the design of a multi-storey office complex, an environment friendly housing estate, a ring pull tab on a can of coke, to that designed by nature, the organic, that which serves a basic purpose and replicates endlessly, evolving, adapting, surviving, to the very things we eat. Our lives are continually touched by design. Some perhaps even have a design for living. The subject matter is vast. If you have a particular expertise, or a love, or knowledge and would like to contribute, or research, or perhaps would like to submit a page, or suggest topics, or maybe supply design material that is not perhaps general knowledge, or still currently in development, please
