RENE DESCARTES
"I think, therefore I am."
INTRODUCTION
Rene Descartes was one of the greatest philosophers of the Renaissance period.
BACKGROUND
Rene Descartes was born on March 31, 1596, in a small town in France called La Haye. He attended the college of Henri IV in La Fleche at the age of 10 and he left La Fleche in 1614 to study civil and cannon law at Poitiers. He received baccalaureate and licentiate degrees in law in 1616, and in 1618 he joined the army of Prince Maurice. Between 1628 and 1649 he led a quiet scholarly life. He produced most of his philosophical writings within this period. Rene Descartes died in Sweden in the year 1650.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Rene Descartes was a respected philosopher, scientist and mathematician. He used new methods of investigating nature and he invented analytic geometry. He was the first philosopher to describe the physical universe in terms of matter and motion. He created three major works: Discourse on Method, Meditations on First Philosophy, and Principles of Philosophy.

... Rene Descartes SELECTIONS FROM THE PRINCIPLES OF PHILOSOPHY OF RENE DESCARTES TRANSLATED BY JOHN VEITCH, LL. D., LATE PROFESSOR OF LOGIC AND RHETORIC IN THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW CONTENTS
    From the Publisher's Preface.
The present volume contains a reprint of the preface and the first part of the Principles of Philosophy, together with selections from the second, third and fourth parts of that work, corresponding to the extracts in the French edition of Gamier, are also given, as well as an appendix containing part of Descartes' reply to the Second Objections (viz., his formal demonstrations of the existence of Deity). The translation is based on the original Latin edition of the Principles, published in 1644. The work had been translated into French during Descartes' lifetime, and personally revised and corrected by him, the French text is evidently deserving of the same consideration as the Latin originals, and consequently, the additions and variations of the French version have also been giventhe additions being put in square brackets in the text and the variations in the footnotes.

    Name:
    Rene Descartes Dates:
Born: March 31, 1596 in Touraine, France
Died: February 11, 1650 in Stockholm, Sweden Biography: Rene Descartes was a French philosopher who developed the goal of not simply making a contribution to some larger and older body of knowledge but rather of totally reform philosophy from the ground up. Descartes thought that, by doing so, he could construct his ideas in a more systematic and rational manner than if he simply attempted to add to the things done earlier by others. He started with the determination to doubt everything and take nothing for granted. But, in the process of systematically taking down every assumed bit of knowledge, he believed that he came across one proposition which could not be doubted: his own existence. After all, the mere act of doubting presupposed something which was engaging in doubt. This proposition is famously expressed

DESCARTES, Rene L'homme de Rene Descartes et un traitte de la formation du foetus. Paris Jacques Le Gras 1664 4to., [lxx], 448, [8] pp., Woodcut printers' device on title, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, and more than 50 large woodcut text engravings. Contemporary calf, rebacked with the original backstrip laid down; light browning around the edges and an occasional stain. An excellent copy from the library of Alfred M. Hellman, with his bookplate. First edition in French of the first important textbook of physiology. Originally printed in Latin in 1662, this French edition was the first to contain Descartes' De la formation du foetus, in which he explains reproductive generation in physiological terms. In addition, he provides the first description of bodily responses in terms of neuro-muscular action. He believed that all physiologic mechanisms resulted from the laws of mathematics and physics; therefore, it was out of this work that the concept of the "robot" or "machine man" arose. Of special interest is the printer, in that both Le Gras and Charles Angot are listed by Guibert for this edition; however, we could only locate 2 copies printed by Le Gras. Descartes (1596-1650) refused to have this work printed during his lifetime, especially after the condemnation of Galileo. He was certain that his mechanistic view of the human body would be considered heretical. The work had to wait until after his death to be printed. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by ; click
