Medicago truncatula as the Nodal Species for Comparative and Functional legume genomics
NSF Project 9872664, 1999-2000 Progress Report (NSF Plant Genome Program)
Abstract
Research activities conducted under this program encompasses the following approaches: (1) comparative genomics, which involves comparing the organization of genes between Medicago truncatula, the crop legumes pea, alfalfa, and soybean, and the well-characterized model plant Arabidopsis thaliana; (2) functional genomics, which involves constructing and characterizing a library of expressed gene sequences, and conducting large scale gene expression analysis to study gene function, and (3) bioinformatics, which involves experts in computing to develop databases and database resources for analysis and dissemination of Medicago truncatula genome information.
The long term impact of this research will be to integrate genetic and functional information across legumes, and thereby expand opportunities for basic and applied agronomic research in economically important legume species. This knowledge will enable more efficient cloning and characterization of valuable genes and traits, such as those involved in disease resistance and crop productivity, and it will ultimately facilitate the development of improved crop varieties. Thus, many of the genes identified in the course of this research will become the focus of crop improvement strategies and of continued scientific investigation by plant biologists throughout the world. The work described in this progress report benefits enormously from previous NSF-sponsored research on the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Likewise, completion of the project will benefit not only research on legumes, but the broader scientific and lay communities as well.

Reviews of Beckett Works
This page will collect links to reviews, including "classic" reviews of Beckett's fiction and drama, reviews of the many books written about Beckett and his work, and reviews of important productions. It is heavily weighted in favor of The New York Times , which has an excellent Web site and online database. You may have to register to get in; it's free, and only takes a minute, and it is very much worth it. As other newspapers and journals start placing their archives online, we will be sure to flesh out these sections. Apmonia would also like to thank the Samuel Beckett On-Line Resources and Links Page, which has archived some of these reviews on their site.

Using Lycos Spy vs. spy vs. spy The story of Stalin's spies in America: both worse and better than was feared Author: By Lynnley Browning, Globe Staff Date: SUNDAY, February 14, 1999 Page: Section: Books The Haunted Wood Soviet Espionage in America The Stalin Era By Allen Weinstein and Alexander Vassiliev. Random House. 402 pp. Illustrated. $30. Many of the dozens of Americans who passed secrets to the Soviet Union before World War II apparently did so for ideological and philosophical reasons, not monetary ones. Often drawn from the ranks of privileged intellectuals, American informants in the 1930s and '40s trafficked in heady infatuation with Moscow's communist experiment. Samuel Dickstein was an exception. A New York Democrat in Congress who worked early on to root out Nazi sympathizers, Dickstein ran a lucrative trade in illegal visas for Soviet operatives before brashly offering to spy for the NKVD, the KGB's precursor, in return for cash. To wheeler-dealer Dickstein, to whom the Soviets assigned the code name ``Crook,'' green, not red, was the motivating factor. Dickstein's tale, new in the literature on Americans who spied for the Soviet Union, is among the shortest and most startling in ``The Haunted Wood,'' a new investigation by American historian Allen Weinstein and Russian spy-turned-journalist Alexander Vassiliev. Over 1993-'95, the authors had unparalleled access to selected, never-before-seen KGB files. Based on that research, they have compiled a selective account of what they term ``the golden age'' of Soviet espionage in the United States, casting new light upon Moscow's intelligence machine from 1933 to 1945.

Samuel Beckett has always been something of an enigma. Born and raised in Ireland, he moved to France as a young man and remained there, risking his life during the war in his work with the French Resistance. Kind, generous, and often funny in real life, his plays and novels are implacably dark, filled with despair, need, and isolation. In Samuel Beckett: The Last Modernist , biographer Anthony Cronin limns a deft portrait of the great writer using Beckett's letters, early fiction, and Cronin's own acquaintance with both his subject and several of Beckett's friends in Dublin. Taken together, these sources reveal a multifaceted man. Beckett passed through many phases on his way to greatness: a French teacher at Dublin College, a member of the Paris circle that formed around James Joyce in the late 1920s, and later an active participant in the French Resistance. The years following World War II proved a fertile time in Beckett's creative life, encompassing his transition from the autobiographical to the modernist impersonalperhaps his greatest works. Anthony Cronin admirably balances his portrayal of the man and the artist, rendering the details of Beckett's uneventful life and his rich imagination in a way that fleshes out the man even as it celebrates the genius.

Some sources claim that FDR was Jewish. Whether he was or not, he certainly surrounded himself with a small army of them.
Jews in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration were especially conspicuous in the Social Security Board, Department of Justice, National Labor Relations Board, and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The following is a partial list of FDR's Jewish staff, and close friends.
*Samuel Rosenman= Speech writer.
*Samuel Dickstein= An immigrant from Russia, he was the Chairman of the House Committee on Immigration and Naturalization.

Ordinarily this researcher works in the dark. He knows very little about the shtetls or landsmanshaften that he works on. He leaves it to the reader to find the names and allows the reader to exercise his free associations to flesh out the stories behind the names. If the researcher confines himself to the names that's work enough for him to do. If he lists the name then for some time that name stays alive. Thanks to the archivists of YIVO and the very anonymous Edward Rosenbaum working hard behind the scenes on  these lists of names that  are published on this website. In order not to duplicate efforts I ask the readership ahead of time about the shtetls I intend to research. I hit gold. Eilat provided me with a wealth of materials that are wonderful but outside of my chosen limited scope. She is a historian of these and other shtetls in this vicinity. Much of her knowledge and materials are on websites of the descendants of these shtetls. But she was kind enough to provide a reproduction of a dues ledger book which has become my main research tool for name listing. Mrs. Levitan will list these sights for your use. The shtetls are presented together because of their geographic closeness as well as their sharing of blood ties and social interaction.

MAGDALENA MICIÑSKA

"Gdy ¿ydzi spokojnie rozrastaj± siê, s³yszymy krzyki rozpaczy, ¿e nas zalewaj±; gdy t³um chrze¶cijañski przeciw nim wyst±pi, brzmi oburzenie na jego dziko¶æ; gdy izraelici pozostaj± w swej ciemnocie i odrêbno¶ci, ¼le, bo stanowi± ¿ywio³ obcy i szkodliwy; gdy siê o¶wiec± i upodobni±, ¼le, bo wypieraj± nas ze wszystkich stanowisk".
"Chcemy siê wzi±æ do roli - powiadacie: ¯ydzi zagarniaj± nam ziemiê; do medycyny, adwokatury, notariatu - krzycz±: ¯ydzi wyparowuj± nas z wszystkich stanowisk. Ograniczeni do handlu, jeden na tysi±c robimy w nim maj±tek obrotno¶ci±, ryzykiem i oszczêdno¶ci± - wo³acie: ¯ydzi oszukuj± i wyzyskuj±. Chc±c siê lepiej zrosn±æ ze spo³eczeñstwem, przyjmujemy wasz obyczaj i religiê. Czy nas przygarniecie wtedy? Wyzywacie: przechrzta!
Ju¿ jednak po up³ywie dwóch dziesiêcioleci rachuby te okaza³y siê z³udne, czego dobitnym wyrazem by³ wspomniany na pocz±tku pogrom z 1881 roku. Wypowiedzi nacjonalistów z obu stron jeszcze bardziej utrudni³y proces asymilacji.
