Mary Digges
was born in Maryland in 1745, on her family's estate known as, "Mellwood Park," which is now located in Prince Georges county. The family estate was quite beautiful and received such distinquished guests as George Washington. The future President would visit Mary's father, Ignatius Digges, for a brief rest from his travels around the colonies. Coming from such a prominent family, it was fitting that Mary would be courted by the son of another prominent family, the Lee's of "Blenheim," also located in Prince Georges county. In October of 1771, Mary Digges and Thomas Sim Lee were married at her home, "Mellwood Park." They resided at "Needwood," which is now Frederick county, with their eight children. The couple was very active in patriotic activities during the Revolutionary War. They were also very committed to their religious and community ties. They founded the St Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Petersville, Maryland. In 1779, Thomas Sim Lee was selected to become the second Governor of Maryland, succeeding Thomas Johnson. He held the position of state executive until 1782 and then was selected to serve again in 1792. In 1794, he completed his second tenure as Governor. The Revolutionary War was an extremely difficult time for everyone, and especially challenging for the Lee's. Supplies were low, morale was poor and officers of the Maryland Line reported deplorable conditions suffered by the Continental troops. With supply shortages the most immediate threat, General George Washington appealed to his friend, Governor Lee for assistance, stating "unless some extraordinary and immediate exertions are made by the States from which we draw supplies, there is every appearance that the army will infallibly disband by fortnight" Governor Lee appealed to Mary for support. She hastily stepped forward into the public arena, a place women were forbidden to venture.

Women's Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
March 12, 1996
Mary Digges Lee (1745-1805) This evening, I am privilaged to present an honoree, Mary Digges Lee, who acted in defense of our country during a time of national crisis; a woman who went outside the prescribed social circles of women during the eighteenth century to make an important contribution to the Revolutionary War effort, at a time when women of her social status were expected to remain behind the scenes. Mary Digges Lee, the wife of Governor Thomas Sim Lee, responded to the need of the Revolutionary War troops from Maryland by rallying the women of Maryland to raise money in support of the war effort. She then established a correspondence with General George Washington, asking how these resources could be put to best use. General Washington responded suggesting that the money raised be put toward the purchase of much-needed shirts and black neck cloths for the troops in the Southern army. He expressed gratitude to Mrs. Lee for the "patriotic exertions of the ladies of Maryland in favor of the army." Mrs. Glendening is right when she said that these women worked very hard with little recognition. Emily's research, much of which will shortly be available on the Internet at the Maryland State Archives' web site, has already demonstrated how important these women were to the history of the times in which they lived.

Leonard Digges of Wooten Court ("the English Mathematician")
  • Educated at Oxford and was a skilled architect, expert surveyor, and a considerable author.
  • Wrote "Tectonican" in 1556, "Pantometria" in 1571, and "A Prognostication Everlasting" during the period 1553-1556. The latter was an astrological work.
Information from ID I807:
  • Mathematician and cartographer
  • Known as an architect and master of fortification.
  • Skilled in optics
  • Participated in Wyatt's Rebellion against Queen Mary Tudor. As a result he lost his estate, which was recovered under Queen Elizabeth I by his son, Thomas.
  • Published "Prognostication" in 1553, apparently to earn money after his estates were sequestered. It was frequently reprinted until 1605, and was an almanac with astronomical information about such things as how to determine the hour of the night from the stars, and information about observation instruments. In 1555, he dedicated the book to Lord Clinton, later the Earl of Clinton, who apparent;y saved him from execution after the Wyatt Rebellion.
  • It is different to determine his scientific accomplishment because much of his work was published after his death by Thomas, and intermingled with Thomas' work. All his was "Tectonican," (1556), a surveying manual emphasizing practical mathematics.
