ARCHITECTS ... PHYSICISTS MATHEMATICIAN, PHYSICIST DIOCLES OF ALEXANDRIA (fl. 2nd century BC) Work
Diocles lived in Alexandria. His principal work is:
"On burning mirrors": A treatise on focal lenses that also deals with two familiar mathematical problems of the age:
1. "Archimedes' Problem", that is, how to divide a sphere by a plane in such a way that volumes of the resulting segments have a given ratio. Diocles solved it by means of two conical sections, an ellipse and an isosceles hyperbola.
2. "The Delian problem", that is, the duplication of the cube. Diocles drew a curve with two branches symmetrical about a cusp on the diameter and proceeding to infinity; this has since been known as the "cissoid of Diocles". In the 17th century Newton devised an instrument to trace it in a single movement
Fragments of Diocles' work exist in Arabic translation in the Escorial (Spain).

Vers 240 – vers 180 AV J.C.
Lorsque

Number Title The Charioteer Diocles Findspot Rome Language Latin Source ILS 5287 Trans David Potter Introduction This inscription provides invaluable information about the way that a career unfolded, the way that events were ranked, the number of races that a charioteer might drive in, the way that races were run and the history of chariot racing in the 2nd century AD. Gaius Appu]leius Diocles, charioteer of the Red faction , a Spanish Lusitanian by birth, he lived for 42 years, 7 months and 23 days. He first raced for the White faction in the consulship of Acilius Aviola and Corellius Pansa . He won his first race for the same faction in the consulship of Manius Acilius Glabrio and Gaius Bellicius Torquatus . He raced for the first time for the Green faction in the second consulship of Torquatus Asprenas and Annius Libo . He won for the first time for the Red faction in the consulship of Laenas Pontianus and Antonius Rufinus
Totals: he raced four hourse chariots for 24 years, he started in 4257 races, he won 1,463 times. In the first race after the procession: 110 times, in singles , 1064 times. He won 92 major prizes. Of these, 32 were of 30,000 HS, three of them with six-horse teams; 28 of 40,000 HS, two of them in races with six horse chariots, 38 of 50,000 HS, one of these in a seven-horse chariot; 3 of 60,000 HS. last updated: The cissoid can be constructed as follows:
Given a circle C with diameter OA and a tangent l through A. Now, draw lines m through O, cutting circle C in point Q, line l in point R. Then the cissoid is the set of points P for which OP = QR. This construction has been done by the Greek scholar Diocles (about 160 BC) . He used the cissoid to solve the Delian problem, dealing with the duplication of the cube. He did not use the name cissoid. The name of the curve, meaning 'ivy-shaped', is found for the first time in the writings of the Greek Geminus (about 50 BC). Because of Diocles' previous work on the curve his name has been added: cissoid of Diocles
Roberval and Fermat constructed the tangent of the cissoid (1634): from a given point there are either one ore three tangents.
In 1658 Huygens and Wallis showed that the area between the curve and his asymptote is p
The cissoid of Diocles is a special case of the generalized cissoid , where line l and circle C have been substituted by arbitrary curves C1 and C2.
The curve, having one cusp and one asymptote, has as Cartesian coordinates:

He also studied the problem of Archimedes to cut a sphere by a plane in such a way that the volumes of the segments shall have a given ratio. Diocles wrote On burning mirrors which proves the focal property of a parabolic mirror for the first time. Largely ignored by later Greeks it had a large influence on the Arab mathematicians, in particular on al'Haitam and Latin translations from about 1200 of al'Haitam brought the properties of parabolic mirrors discovered by Diocles to the West.
