The following match report is by Kevin Motley, Harrogate Town Web-reporter "There was no doubt who the officials, players and supporters of Barrow Football Club put the blame on this defeat to, when they fell to only their second away league defeat of the season in a highly controversial game in North Yorkshire last night. Referee John Lawson from Pontefract certainly had a busy night, issuing 8 cautions (7 to Barrow) and he also sent two visiting players off, in an evening which could also see Barrow up before the Football Association on a disrepute charge. The Sciences September/October 1995, 20-25. You might expect that as the number of dimensions goes up, space gets stranger and more interesting. And so it does, in the trivial sense that any space has all the lower- dimensional spaces packed inside it. From a deeper point of view, however, every Euclidean space has its own character, and as far as the number of dimensions is concerned, more is often less. 3-dimensional space is a fascinating place - it is the first Euclidean space in which it is possible to get hopelessly lost [the author refers to random walk]. By gluing, twisting and otherwise identifying segments of complex surfaces, one can build up a bewildering array of possible 3-manifolds. But by establishing classes of topologically equivalent manifolds, topologists have made remarkable progress in narrowing down the possibilities. It has been shown mathematically that, in dimensions four and up, manifolds get so complicated that no set of specifications can categorize them all. The Poincare' conjecture has been proved in every dimension except three - why is the 3-dimensional case so hard to prove? Nobody knows. In one particularly amazing and useful breakthrough, topologists have discovered that they can start with the 3-sphere and, via a process of cutting and pasting called surgery, refashion it to produce any other finite, orientable, one piece 3-manifold. 890 Michael Atiyah: The frontier between geometry and physics. by Joyce Payne Race morning dawned, cold but dry, and Jim made his way to Kalkaska high school. Jim's wave went off at 10:05 am, and after check in was done: 8:15 am, he asked "What now?" The weather kept changing, as the clouds darkened and rode high, then low; rain came in spurts from light to heavy, not lasting long and the temperature soared. [Jim] Allen and Donaldson wondered what to wear - booties, vest, jacket...and decided to wait another hour to decide because surely the weather may change again...and it did. Leaving the boot covers in the car (turned out to be a good choice) Allen and Donaldson finally got to warm up and make their way to their wave start. [Sherry] Simon had left for the Slush Cup start, and [Karen] McKee and [Mark] Hovsepian were ready as well. [Tony] Gwin was not in sight but somewhere ready to roar! The Viking sang the national anthem (what a sight) and the race was on. Gwin was out in the first wave of the MVW folks, and the goal for everyone else was to catch Tony.

Even though everyone recognised that in reality Daisy Hopkins was being tried for what Lord Coleridge called "the far graver charge of her being a person of immoral character and for having been guilty of immoral conduct", that could not sustain the conviction. That charge had never been made. Those were great days for habeas corpus. Contrast the position now. The present Lord Chief Justice, Lord Bingham, giving judgement a year ago in a group of cases involving challenges to a number of custody time limit extensions - ex parte MacDonald - said, in respect of one of them:

Early spring in Oz curtails the Bump Skiers Season
The British Bump Skiers training and competing in Australia had their string of top scores brought to a premature end with the arrival of rain and high temperatures. With 3 of the 4 calendar events completed, the final competition scheduled for Falls Creek on 15/16 September has been cancelled due to lack of snow. Our eleven intrepid mogul competitors from the British, Scottish and English Freestyle Ski Teams have been training in Victoria since mid June. They have battled with transport problems (one car written off the first week, one blown gasket on the way to a competition), equipment lost by airlines (one competitor had no skis for nearly 3 weeks) and infections (5 out of the 11 struck down so far). However they have almost all achieved personal best performances and look forward to improved world rankings on the list to be published in November. The last event completed, the Australian Championships at Perisher, New South Wales saw rain and heavy snow on the course. This made the bumps very soft so they soon became absolutely enormous. Not to be deterred Laura Donaldson (29, Glasgow) took the Bronze Medal in the Women's Dual Mogul event. 'I was really pleased with my result', commented Laura, 'but it would have been nice to get that in singles too'. A top 5 place in these events reaches the international qualification for the Olympics in 2002. Laura has come close to reaching this with two 8th and one 7th places, but like fellow Scot Simon Bates (24, Edinburgh) has failed to achieve the last few points needed. Simon had two 7th and one 9th place in single moguls. Stuart Greenshields (18, Edinburgh) is another Scot achieving success down under. He was second junior male at the Mt. Hotham event.

The 5 players were: Tom Cooper, Rory Delap, David Langan, Rod Thomas and Ron Webster. A selection committee of 25 met to discuss the merits of the leading contenders. Dave: Going to go with Tommy Cooper on this one; heavily influenced by my Dad who saw him play regular. If he was good enough to captain England, that says it all for me. In my lifetime we've had some really good right backs without any outstanding one. Mike Trapido: I am going for Rod Thomas but I doubt many will agree with me. Craig Gutteridge: This is tricky we've not really had a star right back. After conferring with my Dad I've gone for Ron Webster, a bit of a Jacob Laursen style solid, no-nonsense defender. Derby born and bred too, so I believe... Nolan Waugh: In the time I have been supporting the Rams there have only been two outstanding right backs, Ron Webster and David Langan. Although Rod Thomas was quite useful. Webster was very dependable but Langan was a real class act (sad to hear of his current situation). So my vote goes to Davy boy.

93. [hep-th/9511037] Topological Quantum Field Theory: A Progress Report
A brief introduction to Topological Quantum Field Theory as well as a description of recent progress made in the field is presented. I concentrate mainly on the connection between ChernSimons gauge theory and Vassiliev invariants, and donaldson theory and its generalizations and Seiberg-Witten invariants. Emphasis is made on the usefulness of these relations to obtain explicit expressions for topological invariants, and on the universal structure underlying both systems.
