Thu, 13 Jun 2002 12:45:39 -0400 (EDT) In the end, to quote the rock group Guns 'n Roses: "what we have here is a failure to communicate." This line appeared in the movie "Cool Hand Luke" years before Guns 'n Roses. The warden says it to Luke (Paul Newman) when he refuses to follow prison rules after repeated punishment. To bring this back to mathematics, consider the question Heck and Buckner raised of whether Cantor's ideas represent a "great conceptual leap." (This question is more interesting to me that all the discussion of "mysteries" arising from the fact that a thing can have more than one name.) Raymond wrote: > Yes, it's not a great conceptual leap now. I don't know enough about history to posit whether it was then or not. However, it's a conceptual

Emil du boisreymond (1818-1896) Emil du bois-reymond discovered action potentialwhen Pierre paul Broca (1824-1880) Broca studied damage to human brains.

Important People in the History of Biopsychology
Robert Whytt (1714-1766)
Whytt distinguished between voluntary and involuntary movements. He did this by studying a frog's spinal reflexes. He found that it was possible to stimulate small portions of the spinal cord, producing automatic movements.
Luigi Galvani (1737-1798)
In 1780, Galvani began experiments on electricity. He discovered that nervous impulses were electrical. He found that frog legs twitched when they were electrically charged. After putting a frog leg between two different metals, the leg would twitch. This led to the discovery of th galvanic skin response (GSR), which is the change in the skin's electrical conductivity.
We now know that this is because an electrical current is produced when a salt solution connects two different metals. Galvani also distinguished between sensory nerves, which bring information to the brain, and motor nerves, which bring information from the brain to the muscles.
Rush (1746-1813)
Rush is best known for theoretical and therapeutic innovations in psychiatry. Physical causes (brain, heredity, diet, etc) can affect exercise of moral faculty. He proposed terms "micronomia" and "anomia" for partial or weakened action and total absence of moral faculty.
Braid (1795-1860)
Braid linked hypnotic phenomena to brain physiology, developing a straightforward, less mystical induction technique, and introduced a terminology that was more acceptable to medical and scientific establishment. This helped prepare the way for eventual use of hypnosis in research on psychopathology. He explained the physical effects of hypnotism as being produced by peculiar conditions of the nervous system.
