H.E. Dudeney, who was born in 1847 in Mayfleet, Sussex, England was Sam Loyd’s British counterpart. The two men corresponded frequently, and there is no doubt that they exchanged ideas and did not hesitate to modify each other’s inventions. Dudeney contributed puzzles to Strand’s Tit-bits column under his pseudonym of Sphinx, and he was soon given his own column, Perplexities . Dudeney believed that puzzle-solving was an intellectual process of the highest order and that no-one could be more clear thinking and logical than one who constructed such works. Among his publications are: The Canterbury Puzzles The World’s Best Word Puzzles (1929) and Amusements in Mathematics , which has a preface dated 25 March 1917 and which is a marvellous collection of arithmetical. algebraical, geometrical, point and line, route, chessboard and magic square problems.

The Labourer’s Puzzle
During one of his rambles, Professor Rackbrane chanced to come across a man digging a deep hole.
“Good morning”, he said. “How deep is that hole?”
“Guess”, replied the labourer. “My height is exactly 5 feet 10 inches”.
“How much deeper are you going?” asked the professor.
“I am going twice as deep”, was the answer, “and then my head will be twice as far below ground as it is now above ground.”
Rackbrane now asks if you could tell how deep that hole would be when it was finished.
The Abbey
In 1890 Henry E.Dudeney was responsible for a new innovation, that of magic word squares complete with clues which were provided in the form of a verse entitled The Abbey. The object was to replace the seven numerals in the verse with seven words, which when listed in their given order form a magic word square, where the seven words read the same both across and down.
‘Twas spring. The abbey woods were decked with second.
The abbot with his fifth , no trouble reckoned; But shared his meats and seventh which every man Who loves to feast has first since time began.

Magic Squares - References
The following list includes a number of books, in order of author, that contain references to Magic Squares. The list is not intended to be exhaustive, but it is representative of the range of both mathematical and magical literature that is available on this fascinating subject: A B C D ... Allerton, Bert (1958) Close Up Magician
Andrews, W. S.
This is probably the definitive work on Magic Squares. It shows how to construct them, the detailed mathematics behind them, and all of the many variations that exist. It is also a highly "technical" book, and of more interest to the serious mathematician than the average magician.
Annemann, Theo. (1931) The Book Without A Name
This book contains some good presentation tips.
Anon. Internet
There are many "pages" on the Internet about Magic Squares.
Anon. The Complete Home Entertainer. London: Odhams Press Limited
This is quite an old book that I found on my local market. It contains a number of chapters on magic, and one on word games, one of which is an early Latin Word Square.

The Pythagorean Theorem or The Spider and The Fly? For almost every course one can find a small set of questions ... questions that can be stated with the minimum of technical language, that are sufficiently striking to capture interest; that do not have trivial answers, and that manage to embody in their answers the important ideas of the subject.
P R Halmos 1975 Henry Dudeney raised this question: A spider and a fly are in the same room. The fly is fast asleep and the spider is hungry. What is the shortest route the spider might take? Ah, I almost forgot! The spider can not swing itself like Tarzan, king of the jungle. It is limited to crawling on the walls, ceiling and floor. The room is 15 meters long, 6 m wide and 6 m high. The spider is 0.5 m from the ceiling and 3 m from each wall. The fly is 0.5 m from the floor and 3 m from each wall. I will give you a hint: The answer is not 21 m. The problem is complicated since it is in three dimensions. Sooner or later the student may try the equivalent problem in two dimensions. The room is flattened out and one has to pick the best net. Here is a candidate:

Many of your solutions were correct, but just part of them was the best - showing the best (maximal) score against the best possible play of the second player.
Below we'd like to propose you all the best solutions to the six challenges of Mini-Contest 15. For each challenge the maximal winning score (against the best player) is given.
Challenge 1: G-H; 7 to 2.
Challenge 2: H-L (or M-N); 8 to 1.
Challenge 3: B-C; 7 to 2.
Challenge 4: F-G; 6 to 3.
Challenge 5: F-G; 7 to 2.
Challenge 6: A-B (or B-F); 8 to 1.
Also we show the two original solutions by Sam Loyd and Henry E. Dudeney. The Boxer's Puzzle
Solution by Sam Loyd The Nine Squares Game Solution by Henry E. Dudeney I should play MN. My opponent may play HL, and I play CD. (If he had played CD, I should have replied HL, leaving the same position.) The best he can now do is DH (scoring one), but, as he has to play again, I win the remaining eight squares.
