    Desta vez ele errou

    Benjamin Franklin's Magic Squares
Amongst our forebears, some very distinguished names have played with magic squares. Benjamin Franklin is one example. He played with the construction of magic squares in 1736-37 when he was a clerk of the Pennsylvania Assembly. These two order eight squares are reproduced on pages 394 and 395 of the Papers of Benjamin Franklin Volume 3.
Neither of these squares is Pan-magic, but a Spreadsheet Analysis of his squares makes it clear that he created them with a logical and structured underlying pattern. The coloring I used above emphasizes this logical pattern. Benjamin Franklin started his squares conventionally at 1, so the magic sum for his squares is 260.
    Henry Dudeney
Writing in 1917 Dudeney said: "Of recent years many ingenious methods have been devised for the construction of magics (magic squares), and the law of their formation is so well understood that all the ancient mystery has evaporated and there is no longer any difficulty in making squares of any dimensions. Almost the last word has been said on this subject." (1) Almost, apparently, but not quite! He invalidated his own prediction almost immediately because he continued, himself, to write sufficient additional words on magic squares to cover several more pages.

    Description of the Problem
A pentomino is an arrangement of 5 unit squares (or sometimes cubes) that are joined along their edges. Up to isomorphism (rotating and flipping), there are 12 possible shapes, which are illustrated below. Each piece is labelled by the letter that most accurately reflects its shape. V T W X U Z F P I N Y L The problem is to fit the 12 pentomino pieces into various shapes, often rectangles. The rectangular shapes that fit all 60 squares are of sizes 3x20, 4x15, 5x12, and 6x10.

    A Brief History
The first published solution to a pentomino puzzle appeared in Henry Dudeney's The Canterbury Puzzles in 1907. Dudeney presented a solution to a puzzle of fitting the twelve pentomino shapes together with one square tetromino four squares joined together on a 8-by-8 checkerboard. This puzzle is considered the oldest of the pentomino puzzles and it comes with a fictional story. The story goes that the son of William the Conqueror and the dauphin of France were playing a game of chess when the dauphin threw the chessboard at his opponent in a fit of frustration. The son of William the Conqueror retaliated by breaking the chessboard over the dauphin's head, breaking the chessboard into thirteen pieces12 pentominoes and 1 tetrominowhich then had to be put back together.

the Beast. My love of the supernatural continued to grow as I devoured storiesby Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, henry James, HG
    http://www.dicksiedudeney.com/bio.html
From the moment I wrote my first "book" at the age of 6, I knew I had found my true path in life. Of course as it turned out, it was a long and circuitous path, but one I wouldn’t have missed for anything.
I grew up on a Florida cattle ranch. As an only child, my playmates were motherless calves, lambs, wild hogs, chickens, armadillos, foxes, possums, raccoons, otters, and alligators. I rode a magnificent sorrel quarter horse and I used a cow whip with ease. I spoke a smattering of Miccosukee Seminole and even had the privilege of attending the Seminole’s sacred Green Corn Dance.
It was a wonderful life, but one mostly lacking in human companionship. So to entertain myself, I created stories and peopled them with amazing characters. And because of that, I was never lonely. Like most solitary people, I also spent a good deal of time reading. Mostly, I read everything I could get my hands on, but my favorite works were in horror and dark fantasy. I suppose it all began when I fell in love with the Beast, from "Beauty and the Beast." My love of the supernatural continued to grow as I devoured stories by Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, Henry James, H.G. Wells, Ambrose Bierce, H.P. Lovecraft, and Robert Bloch. I was, and am, totally addicted to monster movies and I revere Rod Serling and his Twilight Zone. I suppose given all that, I had no choice but to become a writer of weird tales myself.

[click here to zip down to the schedule of public lectures] News flash (January 1): Happy New Year to all! One of my correspondents wrote that the new `millenium' began on January 1, 2000, but the new `millennium' begins today. Soon I will be years old, hexwise.

My publishers at Addison-Wesley have risen to the occasion by putting together a splendid boxed set of the that summarize the results of my work on TeX and METAFONT. This is the first update of Volume D for many years, and it also includes many recent changes to The TeXbook and The METAFONTbook and to Computer Modern Typefaces, thanks to improvements suggested by thousands of volunteers all over the world. Nearly every page of these books has been changed since the first editions of 1986. So I urge everybody whose library has only the 1986 printings to ask their friendly librarian to obtain the new definitive set, and I also think everyone with more than a casual interest in digital typography will benefit from this upgraded set of books. The publishers and I have taken great care to dot all the i's and cross all the t's so that the books reach the highest standards of quality.

    • "At first glance magic squares may seem frivolous (Ben Franklin's opinion, even as he spent countless hours studying them!), but I think that is wrong. The great nineteenth-century German mathematician Leopold Kronecker said 'God Himself made the whole numberseverything else is the work of men,' and Cliff Pickover's stimulating book hints strongly at the possibility that God may have done more with the integers than just create them. I don't believe in magic in the physical world, but magic squares come as close as we will probably ever see to being mathematical magic."
