April 1999 Edition
Prominent Physicists of the 20th Century: A CD-ROM Photo Collection
T he APS has developed a collection of portraits of late physicists for the APS centennial. The collection was initiated both to provide a pictorial history of distinguished physicists throughout the last century and to help illustrate talks given by speakers included in the APS Centennial Speakers booklet. The approximately 200 portraits of late physicists selected for the collection have been compiled on CD-ROM. The collection is indexed alphabetically and includes birth and death dates, in addition to a short description of the subject's contribution to physics. How were the names chosen? The selection was done by a committee chaired by APS past President Andrew Sessler, consisting also of physicist-historians Stephen Brush, Gerald Holton, and Spencer Weart. They chose names that were likely to be mentioned in lectures on 20th century physics. But there were two important limitations. First, the committee did not include anyone who died before 1900, although it included a few physicists (such as Boltzmann and Roentgen) whose most important contributions, while made before 1900, had a major impact on 20th century physics. Second, it excluded persons still alive at the end of 1997. Thus you will not find pictures of Galileo, Newton, or Maxwell; nor, will you find entries in the current generation of active outstanding physicists. On the other hand, it interpreted the term "physicist" broadly, including several mathematicians, astronomers, chemists and earth scientists whose work is widely known and highly valued in the physics community.

The Paul Hertz Collection
Paul Hertz was born in 1881 in Hamburg, Germany. He studied mathematics and physics in Heidelberg, Göttingen, Leipzig, and then again in Göttingen, where he earned his PhD in 1904 as a student of Max Abraham. He earned his habilitation at Heidelberg in 1909, returned to Göttingen in 1912, and became a professor extraordinarius there in 1921. Hertz began his scientific career as a theoretical physicist. Later he made significant contributions in the foundations of mathematics and in axiomatics. His approach to research was characterized by thorough treatment of conceptual issues and close analysis of methodological problems. He thus achieved results important for the foundations of mathematical logic, and his investigations were the precursor to various later researches in this area. Gerhard Gentzen's calculus of sequence in particular took as its starting point Hertz's observations about theorem systems. Eventually his interests led Hertz to philosophical and broader logical questions. Political circumstances caused him to emigrate with his family to the United States, where he suffered an untimely death in 1940 while still engaged in his research. Paul Hertz was an important representative of the philosophy of science at a time when it received virtually no recognition in German-speaking countries. The Paul Hertz Collection measures over 5 linear feet. Access to it is afforded by a detailed

Grandi Uomini

pervenuto indipendentemente a risultati analoghi.

Harald Bohr correspondence
The destiny of Harald Bohr's correspondence
The few letters in the Harald Bohr Papers in Copenhagen is a very tiny fraction of the large amount of letters to and from Bohr which once existed. According to Bohr's son, Ole Bohr, Bohr kept the letters he received and organized them well until April 1940 where he destroyed most of them shortly after the German invasion of Denmark. He did that because he was anxious that the Germans should seize on his correspondence and misuse its information about German mathematicians, whom Bohr had helped to leave Germany. According to Asger Aaboe (Yale University), who has had contact with the surviving relatives, the left over of Bohr's collection of correspondence (among other things his correspondence with Godfrey H. Hardy) was kept by Bohr's wife Ulla Bohr for many years, but destroyed by her in the 1970s. There is probably no more correspondence kept by the surviving relatives, at least not any scientific correspondence, and the only part of Bohr's own collection of correspondence which has survived are the letters in the Harald Bohr Papers and some family correspondence (mainly letters to and from his brother Niels) kept in the Family correspondence at the Niels Bohr Archive Hence, the major part of the correspondence listed below is located in other collections. The correspondents are divided in two groups. The first group, which is given alphabetical in a table with links to more details, consists of correspondents where more than one letter to or from Bohr has been conserved. The second group consists of all the minor correspondents where only one letter to or from Bohr has been conserved.

Personengalerie

A passage from Einstein 1916: Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitaetstheorie, Annalen der Physik How did Einstein overcome the "Hole" Argument? Two letters to Paul Ehrenfest, 26 December 1915, and 5 January 1916. A passage from Einstein 1916: Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitaetstheorie, Annalen der Physik When did Einstein come to the conclusion that he overcame the "Hole Argument", which is the product of his own and once convinced him that the general covariance is impossible for field equations? This is one of the curious problems for historians, and I will leave this for them. Instead, I will discuss the "logic" by which Einstein convinced himself that he can defeat the argument. The documents for my analysis are the two letters to Paul Ehrenfest (already quoted by many people), and a passage from Einstein's 1916 paper. In the first letter (26 Dec.), he begins his argument with the following amusing "introduction": "Einstein has it easy. Every year he retracts what he wrote in the preceding year; now the sorry business falls to me of justifying my latest retraction." Then he refers to his 1914 paper (Die formale Grundlage).
