Samuel Eilenberg, an eminent mathematician and collector of Asian art,
died on Friday at the Isabella Geriatric Center in upper Manhattan, where he had been for three months. He was 84 and had been a longtime resident of the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He had been in poor health for the last three years, said Robert L. Poster, one of the co-executors of his estate. Dr. Eilenberg retired in 1982 as a University Professor, the highest professorial rank, at Columbia University, where he had taught since 1947. He was born in

Bronze and earthenware; H. (large container) 8 7/8 in. (22.5 cm)
Samuel Eilenberg Collection, Bequest of Samuel Eilenberg, 1998 (2000.284.55, .42, .41; .53a, b; .47) Description This Bronze Age culture is usually referred to as the "Dongson," after a village in northern Vietnam excavated by French archaeologists in the 1930s. Parallel Bronze Age cultures in Indonesia and Thailand share a vocabulary of similar motifs and shapes, which range from large bronze drums, often with figural decorations, found mostly in Vietnam, to the more widely distributed bracelets and other objects with bold spiral designs. There is also a stylistic affiliation with bronzes of the Dian kingdom in Yunnan, China. The Eilenberg gift, along with a few important "Dongson"-culture bronzes acquired from other sources, makes the Museum's collection virtually unrivaled in the Western world for the study of this material. Selection from 475 Gold Objects
    Indonesian (Java)
Gold and semiprecious stones; L. of center necklace 15 1/4 in. (38.7 cm)
Description The extraordinary collection of Indonesian gold objects, mostly jewelry, formed by the late Professor Samuel Eilenberg and Jonathan P. Rosen was the largest, most comprehensive, and most important collection of Indonesian gold in private hands. Dating primarily to the classical Central Javanese period of the ninth and tenth centuries, this material constitutes not only a major chapter in the art history of Southeast Asia but ranks highly among the sumptuary arts of any world culture. Included in the collection are superb examples of Javanese gold pectorals, jeweled clasps, rings, and ear pendants of all sorts, as well as vessels. A selection from the approximately five hundred pieces assembled by Eilenberg and Rosen has been on view since 1994. Added to what is already the finest collection of Javanese bronze sculpture in the Western hemisphere, primarily the gift of Samuel Eilenberg, the Museum's Indonesian holdings are now unrivaled outside of the National Museum, Jakarta. Table of Contents When this book was written, methods of algebraic topology had caused revolutions in the world of pure algebra. To clarify the advances that had been made, Cartan and Eilenberg tried to unify the fields and to construct the framework of a fully fledged theory. The invasion of algebra had occurred on three fronts through the construction of cohomology theories for groups, Lie algebras, and associative algebras. This book presents a single homology (and also cohomology) theory that embodies all three; a large number of results is thus established in a general framework. Subsequently, each of the three theories is singled out by a suitable specialization, and its specific properties are studied. The starting point is the notion of a module over a ring. The primary operations are the tensor product of two modules and the groups of all homomorphisms of one module into another. From these, "higher order" derived of operations are obtained, which enjoy all the properties usually attributed to homology theories. This leads in a natural way to the study of "functors" and of their "derived functors." This mathematical masterpiece will appeal to all mathematicians working in algebraic topology.

Life of Johnson Here is a museum. Visitors may see in it Nero's couch, a statue of Cerberus and a skeleton of an Ethiopian, the bones stuck with porcupine quills. Here is a cabinet of curiosities. In it are a ribbon pretending to have belonged to Frances Thrale (dead in infancy) but in fact stolen from a nurse's work-basket and fraudulently labelled, a poem about sunsets written by Mrs Williams all by herself with no help at all from Dr Johnson, a tuft of hair looking like something 'plucked from the rump of a squirrel' and purporting to come from the head of Mr Pope, together with an empty space reserved for a promised monkey's paw. Here is a dissection table on which have been anatomised dogs which, before being hanged, had their stomachs cut open and filled with milk, for the better understanding of the absorption of fat through the abdominal lymphatics into the thoracic duct.
