September in Newington Butts bei London als Sohn eines Grobschmieds geboren und begann mit 13 Jahren eine Buchbinder- und Buchhändlerlehre, während der er sich trotz mangelnder Lese- und Schreibkenntnisse ein ungeheures Wissen, vor allem im naturwissenschaftlichen Bereich aneignete. In 1813 he became assistant to Davy at the Royal Institution in London. He was made a member of the institution in 1823 and a fellow of the Royal Society in 1824. In 1825 he became director of the laboratory, and from 1833 he was Fullerian professor of chemistry at the Royal Institution. He declined knighthood and the presidency of the Royal Society. His experiments yielded some of the most significant principles and inventions in scientific history. He developed the first dynamo (in the form of a copper disk rotated between the poles of a permanent magnet), the precursor of modern dynamos and generators. From his discovery of electromagnetic induction (1831) stemmed a vast development of electrical machinery for industry. In 1825, Faraday discovered the compound benzene. Michael Faraday (1791-1867) English chemist and physicist who was born in Surrey, in September 22nd 1791 and died in Hampton Court, in August 25th 1867. His interest for Science only arose after attending some conferences of Davy in the Royal Institution. Davy appointed him assistant in the Institute, where most of his research work was developed. Faraday has an enormous scientific work, being of the great names of science of the 19th century. In 1831 discovered the electromagnetic induction and in 1833 studied the problems of electrolysis performing basilar discoveries and introducing the concepts of electrolysis, cathode, anode, ion, etc. Later on, studied the electrostatic induction, being responsible for the construction of the first Faraday cage. Finally, discovered in 1845 the rotating magnetic polarization, of enormous importance to modern magnetism.

    Faraday, Michael (1791-1867)
    English bookbinder who became interested in electricity. He obtained an assistantship in Davy's lab, then began to conduct his own experiments. He wrote a review article on current views about electricity and magnetism in 1821, for which he reproduced Oersted's experiment. He was one of the greatest experimenters ever. Because he was self trained, however, he had no grasp of mathematics and could therefore not understand a word of Ampère's papers. In the course of his experiments, Faraday discovered that a suspended magnet would revolve around a current bearing wire, leading him to propose that magnetism was a circular force. He also discovered magnetic optical rotation, invented the dynamo (a device capable of converting electricity to motion) in 1821, discovered electromagnetic induction in 1831, and devised the laws of chemical electro-deposition of metals from solutions in 1857.
    He formulated the second law of electrolysis: ``the amounts of bodies which are equivalent to each other in their ordinary chemical action have equal quantities of electricity naturally associated with them.'' He published many of his results in the three-volume Experimental Researches in Electricity (1839-1855). One of his most important contributions to physics was his development of the concept of a field to describe magnetic and electric forces in 1845. He first suggested that current produces a electric ``tension'' which produced an ``electrotonic state,'' or polarization of matter molecules, and was responsible for transmitting the electric force. He experimented with dielectrics in a capacitor. After further experimentation, he abandoned the concept of electrotonic forces in favor of ``lines of force.'' He maintained that these lines could be made visible in a magnet using iron filings. Faraday was an advocate of the law of energy conservation, believing that possibility of ``the production of any one [power] from another, or the conversion of into another.''

RARE PRESENTATION COPY OF THE OFFPRINT. The discoverer of electo-magnetism, Faraday is recognized as perhaps the greatest experimental scientist of all time.
    Using a clue from earlier theories, Faraday discovered that a current-carrying wire would rotate around a magnetic pole or a pole around a current-carrying wire. This discovery would be the principle behind the electric motor. Pursuing this theory further, he discovered that when a wire moved around a magnetic pole a current was produced. This would become the principle behind the dynamo and the transformer, leading into a new era of experiments with electricity.
    Pursuing his fascination with electro-magnetism, Faraday identified all forms of electricity, whether produced by nature or by man-made machine. His theories on magnetic force would become the basis for the later theories of Clerk Maxwell and Albert Einstein.

    Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society The theory which I believe to be a true expression of the facts of electrochemical decomposition, and which I have therefore detailed in a former series of these Researches, is so much at variance with those previously advanced that I find the greatest difficulty in stating results, as I think, correctly, whilst limited to the use of terms which are current with a certain accepted meaning. Of this kind is the term pole , with its prefixes of positive and negative, and the attached ideas of attraction and repulsion.     HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Faraday, Michael A portrait of the English chemist and physicist Michael Faraday. He began his working life apprenticed to a bookbinder, but at the age of 21 he started researching electricity. He took a job at the Royal Institution of Great Britain a year later, and by 1833 had succeeded Humphry Davy as professor of chemistry there. He is regarded as the founder of electrochemistry. In 1821, he began experimenting with electromagnetism, and discovered the induction of electric currents and made the first dynamo, the first electric motor, and the first transformer. Faraday isolated benzene from gas oils and produced the basic laws of electrolysis in 1834. He also pointed out that the energy of a magnet is in the field around it and not in the magnet itself, extending this basic conception of field theory to electrical and gravitational systems.
