Michael Faraday wurde am 22. September 1791 in Newington Butts bei London geboren. Ohne abgeschlossener Grundschulausbildung ging er 1804 zu einem Buchbinder und Buchhändler in die Lehre. Zunächst trug er nur Zeitungen aus, später erlernte er das Buchbinderhandwerk. Im Jahr 1812 besuchte er Vorlesungen des Chemikers Sir Humphry Davy. Davy stellte Faraday daraufhin zunächst als Laborgehilfe und dann als Assistent in seinem chemischen Labor an der Royal Institution ein. Er kümmerte sich um die Vorträge der Gastdozenten und bereitete die Demonstrationsversuche vor. 1816 publizierte er seine erste wissenschftliche Arbeit über die chemische Analyse eines Ätzkalks und wurde 1821 zum Oberinspektor der Royal Institution befördet. 1823 befasste er sich mit der Verflüssigung von Chlor unter Druck und der Herstellung von Hexachlorethan. Im Jahre 1824 fand er bei der Destillation fetter Öle das Benzol und das Butylen und wurde zum Mitglied der Royal Society in London gewählt. Faraday as autodidact followed the lectures of H.Davy . In 1813 he became the assistant of Davy and accompanied him during his travels to France and Italy where he met Vauquelin and Volta. In 1825 he discovered benzene. He carried on Davy's great work in electrochemistry. Faraday reduced the matter of electrolysis to quantitative terms by announcing the well known laws of electrolysis. He also successfully converted electrical and magnetic forces into continual mechanical movement. He invented the first transformer. Links

    Faraday's earliest researches were in the field of chemistry, following the lead of Davy. A study of chlorine, which Faraday included in his researches, led to the discovery of two new chlorides of carbon. He also discovered benzene. Faraday investigated a number of new varieties of optical glass. In a series of experiments he was successful in liquefying a number of common gases (see Cryogenics).
    In experimenting with magnetism, Faraday made two discoveries of great importance; one was the existence of diamagnetism, and the other was the fact that a magnetic field has the power to rotate the plane of polarized light passing through certain types of glass.
    In addition to a number of papers for learned journals, Faraday wrote Chemical Manipulation (1827), Experimental Researches in Electricity (1844-55), and Experimental Researches in Chemistry and Physics (1859).
