Long Eaton Derbyshire
by Arthur Hooper (1954) Long Eaton is a township in Derbyshire, a small manufacturing town. "There is no castle, great House, battlefield or even moorland to give colour to the story" of Long Eaton. This story was told in 1954 by Arthur Hooper, the former local librarian, with the later backing of the Long Eaton Urban District Council. It is a simple, typed, book and has many obvious typing erros. This history, some 140 pages, has been indexed by Mike Foster, Wellington, New Zealand, May 1995. Bibliography
BIBLIOGRAPHY
Arthur Hooper lists the following sources, of which some may possibly be in the Long Eaton library and nowhere else. Annual Reports of the Medical Officers of Health for Long Eaton 1898/1948 Annual Reports pf the Long Eaton Public Library Committee 1906/1949 Long Eaton Advertiser Long Eaton Handbooks. Chapter 25 is devoted to the Game of Life.
John Horton Conway, Richard K. Guy. The Book of Numbers . Copernicus / Springer. 1996
Review:
This wonderful book is crammed with fascinating facts and properties about every kind of number. Many of the properties are given a geometric interpretation, so there are plenty of marvelous diagrams. Even if you've come across the material before, this geometric and diagrammatic approach may give you a new perspective on things - for example, I was particularly taken with the 'telegraph pole' representation of infinite ordinals in the last chapter. Many more weighty presentations tend to be short on diagrams. I think this is a pity: although 'proof by diagram' is rarely sound, and nearly always needs to be backed up by a symbolic proof, diagrams themselves can do much to help prime the intuition.

The archaeological excavation of wooden waggonway remains at Lambton D Pit, Sunderland
by Ian Ayris, John Nolan and Andrew Durkin The timber waggonway tracks at the site of the former Lambton or Bournmoor D Pit at Fencehouses, near Sunderland are the best preserved and most substantial early wooden railway remains yet to be uncovered in this country. The archaeological excavation of the site exposed over 150 metres of in situ timber, allowing an in-depth analysis of the construction of wooden railways, and the study of individual features, including points and check rails. The related discovery of a brick rail-head platform and the masonry and brick remains of a colliery building also allowed the waggonway complex to be placed within its functional context. Observations from a number of leading figures in the research of early coal transport in the Great Northern Coalfield have been combined with the archaeological record of this highly significant site to provide a detailed description of the wooden waggonway and its relationship to the late 18th and early 19th century colliery.
