Probability is expectation founded upon partial knowledge. A perfect acquaintance with all the circumstances affecting the occurrence of an event would change expectation into certainty, and leave neither room nor demand for a theory of probabilities. Born, Max
The conception of chance enters in the very first steps of scientific activity in virtue of the fact that no observation is absolutely correct. I think chance is a more fundamental conception that causality; for whether in a concrete case, a cause-effect relation holds or not can only be judged by applying the laws of chance to the observation. It was there that I attended "The Cowboys' Christmas Ball."
New York journalist William Lawrence "Larry" Chittenden visited Texas in 1883 and hardly looked back. Chittenden wrote about a Cowboy Christmas dance he attended in Anson, Texas and the event he made famous still takes place annually. Many folks are familiar with his "The Cowboys' Christmas Ball," which is included here, along with some of his Texas Sketches, a windy about a stockman's visit to New York, and some other poems, including a short one that accompanies his explanation for the term "maverick." All the poems are from his 1893 book, Ranch Verses . The book's front cover brands "Larry" Chittenden as

    Saturday, January 4, 2003
The morning of Saturday, January 4, 2003, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida began with an offshore breeze, southerly running current and 76 degree F water to provide for ideal conditions for ISHOF’s Waterfront Inns 33 rd Annual Ocean Mile Swim. The 642 individuals crossing the finish line made for the second largest field yet for this longest running ocean mile swim on the east coast of the United States, second in longevity behind the 26-mile Atlantic City Swim. With the assistance of a slight current, swimmers found the race enjoyable. Gary Weisenthal of Lakeside, Florida was the oldest male swimmer in the Masters 85-89 age range, and Margaret Timmins took this distinguished honor in the Master 70-74 female category. Approximately 35 colleges and universities were represented from around the United States and Canada. The University of Washington captured first place in both the college women’s and mixed team events while the Southern Connecticut State University and the University of Washington tied for first in the college men’s team event. Minnesota State University at Mankato finished second while Keene State College finished third in the mixed college team event. Tufts University was third over fourth-place Ithaca in the college men’s event and Eastern Illinois University finished second to third-place Ithaca College in the college women’s event. Fort Lauderdale Swim Team took top honors in both men and women’s club team events.

"It ain't so much the things we don't know that get us in trouble.
It's the things we know that ain't so." - Artemus Ward
    Problem Description
"According to widespread beliefs a so-called law of averages should ensure that in a long coin-tossing game each player will be on the winning side for about half the time, and that the lead will pass not infrequently from one player to the other . . . [but] intution leads to an erroneous picture of the probable effects of chance fluctuations" (Feller (1968), p. 78).
"One should expect naively that in a prolonged coin-tossing game the observed number of changes of lead should increase roughly in proportion to the duration of the game . . . this intuitive reasoning is false . . ." (Feller (1968), p. 84). The number of changes of lead in n trials is, in fact, on the order of the square root of n.
The TI-83 simulation below produces a graphical display of a sequence of coin tosses for a possibly biased coin (although I recommend you start your investigations with a fair coin). In the connected x-y plot which is produced the x-coordinate represents the trial number and the y-coordinate represents (the number of heads) - (the number of tails) obtained to that point. In running the simulation you will probably not want to take the number of trials to be too large because of the time it takes to generate the plot. Initially, at least, you will probably want to keep the number of trials 1000 or less. After the graph is completed the ENTER key may be pressed on your TI-83 to see how many times the number of heads equalled the number of tails (the number of "crossings" on the graph). Also displayed are the lead percentages for the two "contestants".

Chapter 32. Reckoning at William's Bond - A U. S. Dividend Too much Rupert's Tonic left my mind in disorder. Rupert's, to ease the pain of lacerated flesh and lacerated affection. Rupert's, to celebrate the day's victory, and worry about tomorrow's. Rupert's, to fill the unfaceable nil with disorder and confusion. Only the infirmary circle stayed in the Bomb-Proof. Almost all the Slow-Polks slept out in the open yard. It was strange to be inside such a quiet, almost empty Bomb-Proof. Weird, the happy card-sharps! They numbered the card pips by the thin flicker of a single candle. It was odd to see them laugh so wildly as they shoved piles of Liberty's-head dollars about recklessly. They slapped the winner's back. "Pair of threes is all I got - and, mind you, an ace!" "Behold my eights and Nimble Jack!" "I wasn't bluffin'. But I'm out." "Gintlemin, I got tree fine lookin' ladies." A triumvirate of filthy men, somehow eager to lose in poker, they gave up their aces in an atonement to Fate, to break the siege. The laughing card players shunned their luck, and let the loser win. Lose a little poker, win a little war. It was the only way they could contribute to victory. The winner hissed and ticked. Just who was it who won? I recognized an automatonish form. Was it Franklin Stove? I wondered. Had he come back when I slept? I seemed to see him.

feller, william (1968), An Introduction to Probability Theory and ItsApplications, Volume 1, 3rd edition, New York John Wiley Sons.
    http://www.brucehardie.com/pmnotes/books.html
Key Reference Books The following books represent a core reading and reference list for anyone interested in applied probability modelling, with applications in marketing. Many of these books may at first appear rather daunting to those without a solid background in probability and statistics. Don't be scared off; with perseverance and practice, the material becomes more accessible. General Probability and Statistics A working knowledge of probability and statistics is necessary for anyone interested in developing and applying probability models. A classic introductory textbook (at the advanced undergraduate level) is Mood, Graybill, and Boes (1974); its coverage of the material is concise, making it an excellent reference for the basic concepts. Ghahramani (2000) provides a good introduction to the basic concepts and tools of probability upon which applied probability models are built. Another useful book is Ross (2000) only pay attention to the earlier chapters, as topics such as queuing theory are not that relevant to most marketing modellers. In many ways this book is more a collection of solved examples/problems than a traditional textbook. However, the process of working through the examples would result in a thorough understanding of the basic concepts and tools of applied probability models. Two truly classic references are Feller (1968) and Stuart and Ord (1994). Many regard Feller as the bible of discrete probability. Stuart and Ord is a comprehensive reference on statistical distributions and related sampling theory.
