Reviews Table of Contents Hailed as one of the greatest mathematical results of the twentieth century, the recent proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Andrew Wiles brought to public attention the enigmatic problem-solver Pierre de Fermat, who centuries ago stated his famous conjecture in a margin of a book, writing that he did not have enough room to show his "truly marvelous demonstration." Along with formulating this propositionxn+yn=zn has no rational solution for n > 2Fermat, an inventor of analytic geometry, also laid the foundations of differential and integral calculus, established, together with Pascal, the conceptual guidelines of the theory of probability, and created modern number theory. In one of the first full-length investigations of Fermat's life and work, Michael Sean Mahoney provides rare insight into the mathematical genius of a hobbyist who never sought to publish his work, yet who ranked with his contemporaries Pascal and Descartes in shaping the course of modern mathematics. Reviews: "Mahoney's sensitive handling of the material, his sharp appreciation of conceptual and notational subtleties, and his willingness to detail or reconstruct proofs and procedures, now make possible an appreciation of the real power and variety of Fermat's invention."Alan Gabbey

"a marvelous demonstration not easily believed true" "On Line Draft" comment written August 30th 2000. (posted August 30th 2000) Authors Note This On Line Draft serves to prepare the way for me to write my QED to Page 36. It enables me by repetition to verify what I am writing (in a real sense to hopefully prioritise concepts) to what my observations really are Prior to Pierre de Fermat writing his marginal proposition on indices of positive integer exponents greater than two Pierre de Fermat mentally agrees with that Diophantus theorem which implies primitive triples Primitive triples may be numerical representations of right angle triangles, whose sides may be projected to form geometric, perfect squares of square units (surface area of two dimensions) Pierre de Fermat now considers his reconciliations on volume (space contained/occupied of three dimensions) and says to himself but it is not possible for those indices representative to perfect cubes to be written as the sum of two perfect cubes or for those indices representative to multiples of perfect cubes (cuboids) to be written as the sum of two multiples of perfect cubes (two cuboids) for it is impossible to apply to Z, the sum of two evaluated indices

The picture given on the left was made by my sister Irene Rupp in June 2001. It shows the monument built before the covered market in Beaumont de Lomagne, where Pierre Fermat was born. Beaumont de Lomagne is situated approximately 45 km northwest from Toulouse and 40 km southwest from Montauban. It should be mentioned that in the journal DMV -Mitteilungen 2001 (3) p. 12 - 26 an article of Klaus Barner with the title "Das Leben Fermats" (Fermat's life) is published, which also contains a picture of this sculpture but also more informations as well as more pictures. Another article from the same author with the title "Pierre de Fermat (1601? - 1665)" has been published in english in the Newsletter No. 42 of the EMS in December 2001.

The proof of the claim of fermat, is truly a marvellous tract. Did pierre teaseus all 'cause the margin was small, or his writing was much much too fat?

While you're here, you can check out my home page, or visit the UIC math department. A special greeting to all new visitors from the PBS home page! Check out Fermat's Last Tango , a new musical opening off broadway on November 21, 2000. The proof of Fermat's last theorem by Andrew Wiles and Richard Taylor was presented to an audience of over 300 people during a tenday conference at Boston University in August, 1995. At that conference, I issued a poetry challenge asking for occasional verse to celebrate the proof. While the authors' anonymity was preserved at the meeting, all things are revealed in time. If you would like to contribute to this poetry competition, please send your masterpiece to Jeremy Teitelbaum . The editor's decisions regarding suitability for publication in this forum are arbitrary, personal, and final. With thanks to all of the participants, here are the entries (in no particular order). Pierre Fermat
Pierre Fermat (1601-1665) nazywany by³ s³usznie ,,ksiêciem amatorów'' - bêd±c z wykszta³cenia i zawodu prawnikiem (studiowa³ prawo na uniwersytecie w Tuluzie i Orleanie) mo¿e siê poszczyciæ osi±gniêciami w rozwoju nauk matematycznych i fizycznych porównywalnymi z osi±gniêciami najtê¿szych matematyków i fizyków 17. wieku. By³a to s³ynna Mathematica Diofantesa, opublikowana w latach dwudziestych 17. wieku w wersji dwujêzycznej: grecki orygina³ z ³aciñskim t³umaczeniem i komentarzami. (
