http://web.uct.ac.za/depts/fitzpatrick/docs/r757.html
The Roberts' VII Project Draft Species Texts Common Starling Genus Sturnus Linnaeus Small starlings with dark plumage, pale bill and legs, short pointed wings, short tail, straight bill. Head and bill highly modified for open-bill probing, feed extensively on open grassy areas collecting insects. Also take fruit. Sexes alike. Nest primarily in buildings in s Africa (introduced), and restricted to man-modified habitats. Monogamous, both sexes incubate and feed young. Sturnus (L) = starling. R757 Common Starling [Eurasian Starling] Sturnus vulgaris Sturnus vulgaris Linnaeus, 1758. Syst. Nat., 10 th ed. 1:167; Sweden. vulgaris (L) common. Alternative Name: European Starling. Other Names (R757, SM?): Identification: 21-22 cm, 75 g; some sexual dimorphism in plumage. Ad m: In fresh plumage, from Nov-Feb, black with buff to whitish tips to the feathers, creating a speckled appearance. Purplish gloss on the head and flanks, on the rest of the plumage there is some green iridescence. Feathers of nape and chest notably narrow. Wings and tail dark brown, with very narrow buff edges to the feathers. Lower belly and undertail coverts lack gloss and appear largely white. Bill black, eyes dark brown, legs reddish-brown. Pale tips to feathers abrade progressively, so that within 3 mo of complete moult, bird appears uniform black on chest and upperparts with some purple gloss on head and flanks, green gloss on mantle. Lower belly and undertail coverts retain pale tips. Bill becomes progressively yellow from tip in br birds, base remains steel-blue.

Web links related to the Back of the Book program of May 27, 2002
It's very early on Friday morning 6/7/2002 00:25:07 and this Web page is done. Of course I bribed high government officials again to give people off from work the day after this program expressly so they could listen to it. Well, you got to hear some of it. At 1:38 AM (EDT) our transmitter went off the air for about 8 minutes after which we came back on with the auxiliary transmitter at only 4% power! The auxiliary transmitter went off a couple of more times and we never got up to full power again, so this program got really messed up. There had been no warning or notification about this at all, and it may have been done because this was early on Memorial Day and the commercial radio channels consider this time to be something they don't care about. Ironically, the tape of Bill Ferrar's Jazz Sampler program which preceded this program was from November 2001, and Bill announced that we'd go down for transmitter maintenance at one o'clock! Egad! Prophecy via tape selection! As always there are different tenses for the verbs below because some of this was written before the program and some was written after it.

William Benge [who arrived] on the "Marygold," [in] 1619. This muster was ordered in 1622-1623 to determine who had survived Opecancanough's massacre at Jamestown. William Benge/Binge had lived through it. The muster also mentioned when they arrived and on what ship they came. The Virginia Company's treasuror, George Sandys had a plantation and a well-fortified stockade with 30 guns, a "peece" of ordnance, 20 swords, "powder, lead and shott and invluded armor Steele Coats and Coats of Male." I assume that this was necessary for the company's "bank." Bill and Linda [bilinbo@aol.com] found the following...

A Classic Summer Reading List for All Mystery Aficionados
School's almost out, but don't forget all that reading you've got to do for fall. No NOT Rocket Science for Dummies . I have some plans for my hammock this summer and they include checking in with some of those mystery authors I've always meant to spend some time as well as renewing my acquaintance with many of my other favorites. And there's something so orderly and academically correct about starting at the beginning of the genre and reading my way through to the present. Whether you are a long time reader of the genre or recently arrived, there's often the sense that you have missed something along the way. Are you well-versed in golden-age reading? Have you missed a classic hard-boiled dick along the way? Tie up your hammock, get out a big pile of books, put out your prettiest arsenic scented hanky and strap on your silencers. And let's all agree to put aside quadratic equations until at least the middle of July. Unless they're going to help solve the case.
