Fisher was a student at a time when there was still controversy about Darwin's theories and when Mendel's work on genes had just been rediscovered. Fisher made important discoveries in statistics (eg. maximum likelihood), genetics, selection and (genetic) dominance. It could be said that he invented a large part of modern statistics. Fisher was brilliant, an idealist and in some ways naive. He held strong views; many of them are politically incorrect by present standards but that would not have bothered him at all.

Ronald Fisher received a B.A. in astronomy from Cambridge in 1912. There he studied the theory of errors under Stratton using Airy's manual on the Theory of Errors . It was Fisher's interest in the theory of errors in astronomical observations that eventually led him to investigate statistical problems.
Fisher gave up being a mathematics teacher in 1919 to work at the Rothamsted Agricultural Experiment Station where he worked as a biologist and made many contributions to both statistics and genetics. He had a long dispute with Pearson and he turned down a post under him, choosing to go to Rothamsted instead. There he studied the design of experiments by introducing the concept of randomisation and the analysis of variance, procedures now used throughout the world.
In 1921 he introduced the concept of likelihood. The likelihood of a parameter is proportional to the probability of the data and it gives a function which usually has a single maximum value, which he called the maximum likelihood.
In 1922 he gave a new definition of statistics. Its purpose was the reduction of data and he identified three fundamental problems. These are (i) specification of the kind of population that the data came from (ii) estimation and (iii) distribution.

The Sir Ronald Fisher Prize in Genetics
In 1962, Professor J.H. Bennett gave to the University the sum of $300 for the purpose of establishing a prize in memory of the late Sir Ronald Fisher, F.R.S. who was closely associated with the Genetics Department from 1959 until his death in 1962; and a prize called "The Sir Ronald Fisher Prize in Genetics" was made available for award annually, from 1962-1973 inclusive, to the candidate who was placed highest in the work and annual examinations of the Genetics III course, Professor Bennett having given a further sum of $400 in 1974, thereby permitting the establishment of an additional prize, the following rules are hereby made:
  • The prizes shall be known as "The R.A. Fisher Prizes in Genetics". Two prizes shall be available for award annually, as follows:
  • one to the candidate placed highest in order of merit amongst those who pass with distinction in the annual examination in Genetics II; one to the candidate who, having presented in both Level III subjects in Genetics, is placed highest in order of merit overall in these subjects, provided that no award shall be made unless the candidate has reached a standard equivalent to that of a pass with distinction.

    The Sir Ronald Fisher Memorial Scholarships
    The sum of $2,600 having been given to the University by friends and colleagues of the late Sir Ronald A. Fisher, Sc.D., F.R.S., for the purpose of establishing a fund in his memory, the following rules are hereby made:
  • Two scholarships tenable in the University of Adelaide, to be known as Sir Ronald Fisher Memorial Scholarships, shall be offered for award annually. The value of each scholarship, until otherwise determined by the Council of the University of Adelaide, shall be $5,000. One scholarship shall be awarded to the undergraduate who, having presented in both Level III subjects in Genetics, is placed highest in order of merit and at a standard equivalent to that of a pass with distinction overall in these subjects and who proceeds to an Honours degree in Genetics. The other scholarship shall be awarded to the undergraduate placed highest in order of merit amongst those candidates who have completed a major in Statistics, with a standard of distinction overall in the subjects included in the major and who proceeds to the Honours degree in Statistics.

    Commemorating Sir Ronald Fisher

    On Friday 17 May the Royal Statistical Society held a meeting in London to mark the unveiling of a memorial plaque to Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher at the house in Hampstead where he spent his childhood. Such blue plaques commemorating famous people are a notable feature of the London street scene - an earlier example is one for Karl Pearson less than a mile away. The plaque was unveiled by June Posey, one of Fisher's daughters, in the presence of her brother Harry Fisher and one of her sisters, Margaret Fisher, and three of Fisher's grandchildren, David Newsom, Ruth Hodson and Amanda Poesy. The chairman of the 'blue plaque' committee of English Heritage, Francis Carnwath, and the President of the Royal Statistical Society, Peter Green, gave short addresses, before a gathering of some thirty wellwishers. The house, now called Inverforth House, is half-way along North End Way, on the west side of the road opposite Hampstead Heath. It has been extended over the years and is currently being converted into flats. In the afternoon papers were read at the Royal Statistical Society to mark the occasion. M.J.R.Healey spoke on Fisher's statistical work, A.W.F.Edwards on Fisher's genetical work and Alan Grafen on Fisher's contributions to evolutionary theory.
