PROJECT TRUTH
In late 1969, at the same time that Brown and Williamson's internal scientific staff was working to reduce the toxicity of cigarettes, its advertising agency, Post-Keyes-Gardner, was developing copy for Project Truth, highlighting themes designed to undercut the scientific evidence that smoking is dangerous. In contrast to the original "Frank Statement" advertisement in 1954, which announced the creation of TIRC and asserted a commitment to a scientific investigation of smoking, the Project Truth advertisements shifted from science to the "rights" arguments.
This advertising campaign was designed to equate any attack on the tobacco industry with an attack on freedom itself. The intent was to create a public backlash against criticism of the tobacco industry by instilling the fear that regulation of the industry would deprive smokers of their individual rights and deprive the industry of its right to operate freely in the marketplace. Rather than focusing on the reality of a powerful industry fending off the feeble attempts of an overmatched government to put some restraints on its sale of a dangerous and addictive product, the ads portrayed the industry as beleaguered and struggling to protect everyone's freedom against an overbearing government. Themes similar to the ones used in this advertising campaign continue to be used by the industry, most notably in its response to the regulation of smoking in the workplace and public places.

The use of ttests and anova represent an important group of tools in the application of statistical analysis. This mode of analysis is particularly important for those persons involved in doing evaluation research or analysis of data that compares the behaviors, attitudes or performances of persons or products. It is a well developed field and it has a long history in the field of statistical reasoning. [Put in the photos of Sir Ronald Fisher here]. One of the main contributors to the development of ANOVA was Sir Ronald Fisher, knighted by the British Government. He wrote The Design of Experiments Here is a web site for you to examine: Sir Ronald Fisher The material in this section of this web page, here in Chico that is, comes from two parts of the texts in this class; Meier and Brudney’s chapters 10 and 12 and Hamilton’s chapter 5. In order to do this type of work you must read those materials for understanding this material and for doing the report assignment. Here is an example of the use of "t" tests with a data set provided by Hamilton. The data set is called student2. Note how we are using a

Colin Tudge
The Impact of the Gene: From Mendel's Peas to Designer Babies
"People in war experience extreme passions of patriotism, which often incite them to do things that in peacetime they would think horrible. . . Perhaps if people could recognize the [evolutionary/genetic] primitive roots of what they perceive to be their own nobility, they might take pause. What is 'patriotism,' except a kind of extended tribalism? And what is that but the 'desire' of some gene to spread itself by an extreme preference for kin? Why is this 'noble'? Why is it worth dying for, or sending others to their deaths? Said Horace, 'It is meet to die for one's country,' and many a young man has acted on this adage, of his own volition, or someone else's. An evolutionary psychologist would say, 'Nonsense!" and, as a generalization, would surely be right." (p. 217) Time for another mixed review. This, with a few exceptions, was not the book for me. Not only was it internally redundant but it also covered material I was already too familiar with. To put it bluntly, I was bored much of the time. On the other hand, someone who is unfamiliar with the subjects of genetics, cloning, and Mendel will probably find this a great place to start their understanding. I must admit to learning much about Mendel, however, as this was the first biography of more than a few sentences or paragraphs that I had read on the man. Tudge spends several dozen pages providing a good, yet overly cheerleaderish and biased, biography on Gregor Mendel. While debunking several myths surrounding Mendel, Tudge also creates a few. He views Mendel as almost superhuman and perfect. If Tudge thinks something is good then he projects that on to Mendel without bothering to show where Mendel actually said what Tudge claims Mendel thought. Tudge even tries to demolish

Gregor Mendel and the Discovery of Genetics
Through much of the 19th century it was widely believed that 'biology is destiny' and that virtually all human characteristics physical, social and moral are inherited. How heredity actually worked was a considerable mystery. Most characteristics seemed to be averages of those of the parents, perhaps 'regressed toward the mean' of the population as a whole. This seemed to imply that unless there were careful restrictions on choice of mates, people would eventually become more and more average in height, intelligence and everything else. (Very depressing for those who think that the 'average person' is a pretty poor specimen.) Some characteristics eye colour, for instance obviously do not behave in this way * but this only deepened the mystery. Perhaps you can have 'your grandfather's eyes' because some characteristics occasionally 'skip a generation.' Many feared that some less desirable ancestral quality might suddenly emerge Victorian romantic novels are populated with men who exhibit the 'murderous tendencies' of some distant ancestor, and women who live in terror lest they produce a 'throwback' baby because grandfather had sex with a woman of another race. Even Charles Darwin thought that the qualities passed on to children could change depending on the experiences of the parent diet, climate and 'moral exercise' would somehow change the information contained in sperm and ova.

The Fisher Lecture award was established in 1963 by the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS) to honor the contributions of Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher and the work of a present-day statistician. The Fisher Lectureship recognizes the importance of statistical methods for scientific investigations. The Lecture is to be broadly based and is to emphasize aspects of statistics and probability that are closely related to scientific collection and interpretation of data, which are areas in which Fisher made outstanding contributions. It is anticipated that this lecture will be published in one of the COPSS society journals. Since 1982 COPSS has added a cash prize and a certificate to the Lectureship. Nominating letters, with any supporting documentation, should be sent by November 1, 2001, to Kathryn Chaloner, School of Statistics, University of Minnesota, 313 Ford Hall, 224 Church St. SE, Minneapolis MN 55455, e-mail: kathryn@stat.umn.edu.
