Frances FitzGerald The New York Review of Books September 26, 2002
In a speech at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies this April, Dr. Condoleezza Rice observed that "an earthquake of the magnitude of 9/11 can shift the tectonic plates of international politics." She went on to say:
In the months before September 11 the Bush administration matched its surprisingly ideological domestic programs with what Democrats politely described as a "go-it-alone foreign policy." Bush officials called a halt to negotiations with North Korea and withdrew from attempts to negotiate peace in the Middle East. They refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol on global warming and blocked a series of international arms control treaties. Then, while promising to make cuts in US strategic nuclear weapons, they declined to make an agreement with Russia on mutual reductions.
The main feature of the administration's foreign policy during those months was its decision to deploy national missile defenses. From early June until September 11 the President and his national security advisers spent much of their time lecturing skeptical European, Russian, and Chinese leaders about the threat of a ballistic missile attack from "rogue states" such as North Korea, Iran, or Iraq, and insisting that the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty had to be scrapped. Secretary of State Colin Powell was rarely heard from; and policy seemed to be coming from the Department of Defense.

Fitzgerald, George
Irish physicist known for his work on electromagnetics. In 1892 he explained the anomalous results of the Michelson-Morley experiment 1887 by supposing that bodies moving through the ether contracted as their velocity increased, an effect since known as the Fitzgerald-Lorentz contraction.
Fitzgerald was born in Dublin and studied there at Trinity College, where he was professor of natural and experimental philosophy from 1888.
Fitzgerald predicted that a rapidly oscillating (that is, alternating) electric current should result in the radiation of electromagnetic waves - a prediction proved correct in the late 1880s by Heinrich Hertz's early experiments with radio, which Fitzgerald brought to the attention of the scientific community in Britain.
Considering the Michelson-Morley result - or lack of result - Fitzgerald worked out a simple mathematical relationship to show how velocity affects physical dimensions.
The idea was independently arrived at and developed by Dutch physicist Hendrik Lorentz in 1895. In 1905, the contraction hypothesis was incorporated and given a different interpretation in Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity.

Fitzgerald, George Francis 1851-1901, Irish physicist. Fitzgerald was born in Dublin and studied and taught at Trinity College there. He is best known for suggesting how the ether , by causing the contraction of bodies moving through it, could account for the null results of the Michelson-Morley experiment (see relativity ). His main research effort, however, was to work out the consequences of Maxwell's electromagnetic theory for phenomena not considered by Maxwell, such as the reflection and refraction of light.

    GEORGE FRANCIS FITZGERALD, 1851 - 1901
The Millenium Trinity Monday Memorial Discourse by Professor J. M. D. Coey
Professor J. M. D. Coey gave the traditional Trinity Monday Memorial Discourse on 14th May 2000 at 11.30 in the Graduates' Memorial Building, on George Francis FitzGerald. FitzGerald was a visionary physicist who predicted both the contraction of rapidly-moving bodies, a key element of Einstein's theory of relativity, and the generation of radio waves. In Trinity College, Dublin he is remembered for his pioneering attempts to fly in College Park in 1895 in a student-powered flying machine. He was the most accomplished Irish scientist of his generation, a combination of pure physicist, skilled mathematician and practical engineer. FitzGerald's passionate advocacy of practical education in science at all levels led to the establishment of the Dublin Institute of Technology. He foresaw the need for universities to embark on properly-funded research programmes in the sciences and engineering in order to promote industrial competitiveness and ensure the economic well-being of the country.

FITZGERALD PRINTED BY GOODWILL INDUSTRIES TO MY BEST FRIEND PHYLLIS EVA FITZGERALD TO MY FAMILY This is a story. It is not an official family history, and it is certainly not fiction. All the characters you may meet within the following pages were, and are, real people. It is an historical novel. A literary critic may comment adversely on a family history which is evidently incorrect in facts and figures quoted. With a novel, however on the same grounds of accuracy, he may not. Because when certain details are not available the writer uses his imagination to successfully continue with his story. This I have done. I trust you find it readable.
