After the death of his first wife, with whom he had three children, he remarried and Joseph was the ninth of the twelve children of this second marriage. Joseph's mother died went he was nine years old and his father died the following year. His first schooling was at Pallais's school, run by the music master from the cathedral. There Joseph studied Latin and French and showed great promise. He proceeded in 1780 to the Ecole Royale Militaire of Auxerre where at first he showed talents for literature but very soon, by the age of thirteen, mathematics became his real interest. By the age of 14 he had completed a study of the six volumes of Bézout 's Cours de mathematique. In 1783 he received the first prize for his study of Bossut 's Méchanique en général. In 1787 Fourier decided to train for the priesthood and entered the Benedictine abbey of St Benoit-sur-Loire. His interest in mathematics continued, however, and he corresponded with C L Bonard, the professor of mathematics at Auxerre. Fourier was unsure if he was making the right decision in training for the priesthood. He submitted a paper on algebra to

(Auxerre 21.3.1768, Paris 16.5.1830)

[extrait de Encyclopédie Universalis, Paris, 1989] arious memorials have been made to Fourier. A bust by Pierre-Alphonse Fessard was subscribed in 1831 but was destroyed during World War II. A similar fate overtook the bronze statue by Faillot erected in Auxerre in 1849; the Nazis melted it down for armaments. During the night before its destruction, however, the mayor rescued two of its bas-reliefs, which where mounted on the walls of the town hall after the war. A medallion was founded in the town in 1952, and since 1950 the Annales de l'Insitut Fourier have been published by the University of Grenoble. In 1968 the bicentenary of his birth was celebrated and the secondary school in Auxerre was renamed the Lycée Fourier.

FOURIER, JEAN BAPTISTE JOSEPH (1768-1830), French mathematician, was born at Auxerre on the 21st of March 1768. lie was the son of a tailor, and was left an orphan in his eighth year; but, through the kindness of a friend, admission was gained for him into the military school of his native town, which was then under the direction of the Benedictines of Saint-Maur. He soon distinguished himself as a student and made rapid progress, zspecially in mathematics. Debarred from entering the army DII account of his lowness of birth and poverty, he was appointed i Several experiments were made to this end in the United States (see COMMUNISM) by American followers of Fourier, whose doctrines were introduced there by Albert Brisbane (1809—1890). Indeed, in :he years between’ 1840 ‘and 1850, during which the movement waxed and waned, no fewer than forty-one phalanges were founded, Df which some definite record can be found. The most interesting Df all the experiments, not alone from its own history, but also from ~he fact that it attracted the support of many of the most inteF’ Lectual and cultured Americans was that of Brook Farm (q.v.). Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier was born at Auxerre on March 21, 1768, and died at Paris on May 16, 1830. He was the son of a tailor, and was educated by the Benedictines. The commissions in the scientific corps of the army were, as is still the case in Russia, reserved for those of good birth, and being thus ineligible he accepted a military lectureship on mathematics. He took a prominent part in his own district in promoting the revolution, and was rewarded by an appointment in 1795 in the Normal school, and subsequently by a chair in the Polytechnic school.

A Short Biography of Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Fourier
The following text was taken from The Fourier Transform and Its Application , by Ronald N. Bracewell, McGraw-Hill, 1986,pp 462-464.
Baron Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Fourier (March 21 1768-May 16, 1830), born in poor circumstances in Auxerre, introduced the idea that an arbitrary function, even one defined by different analytic expressions in adjacent segments of its range (such as a staircase waveform), could nevertheless be represented by a single analytic expression. This idea encountered resistance at the time I but has proved to be central to many later developments in mathematics science, and engineering. It is at the heart of the electrical engineering curriculum today. Fourier came upon his idea in connection with the problem of the flow of heat in solid bodies, including the earth. The formula x /2 = sin x - (sin 2 x )/2 + (sin 3 x Fourier was obsessed with heat. keeping his rooms uncomfortably hot for visitors, while also wearing a heavy coat himself Some traced this eccentricity back to his 3 years in Egypt where he sent in 1798 with the 165 savants on Napolean's expedition to civilize the country. Prior to the expedition Fourier was a simple professor of mathematics but he now assumed administrative duties as secretary of the Institut d'Egypte a scientific body that met in the harem of the palace of the Beys Fourier worked on the theory of equations at this time but his competence at administration led to political and diplomatic assignments that h e also discharged with success. It should be recalled that the ambitious studies in geography archaeology. medicine, agriculture, natural history and so on were being carried out at a time when Napoleon was fighting Syrians in Palestine, repelling Turkish invasions, hunting Murad Bey the elusive Mameluke chief, and all this without support of his fleet, which had been obliterated by Nelson at the Battle of the Nile immediately after the disembarkation.
