Richard Buckminster Fuller: the planet's friendly genius. A scientist, philosopher. Bucky has gained renown as an inventor and designer (of the Dymaxion house, car and map), the creator of the geodesic dome , the man who coined the term "Spaceship Earth" and organized the World Game, the mathematician who discovered Synergetics, and as a dogged individualist whose genius has been felt throughout the world. He made his mark in areas of architecture, mathematics, philosophy, religion, urban development and design, naturalism, physics, numerology, art and literature, industry and technology.

First there is scientific discovery of a generalized principle, which occur as a subjective realizatin by an experimentally probin individual. Next comes objective employment of that principle in a special case invention. Next the invention is reduced to practice. This gives humanity an increased technical advantage over the physical environment. If successful as a tool of society, the invention is used in bigger, swifter, and everyday ways. For instance, it goes progressively from a little steel steamship to ever-bigger fleets of constantly swifter, higher-powered ocean giants."

"For the first time in history it is now possible to take care of everybody at a higher standard of living than any have ever known. Only ten years agao the 'more with less' technology reached the point where this could be done. All humanity now has the option of becoming enduringly successful." - Buckminster Fuller, 1980. R. Buckminster Fuller, known by his friends as "Bucky", has undeniably been one of the key innovators in the 20th century. He is known as a philosopher, thinker, visionary, inventor, architect, engineer, mathematician, poet, cosmologist, and more. Buckminster Fuller was probably one of the first futurists and global thinkers. He is the one who coined the term "Spaceship Earth", and his work has inspired and paved the way for many who came after him. This is the Dymaxion Map of the world, developed by Fuller as the first world projection to show the continents on a flat surface without visible distortion. Furthermore, this view shows the earth as being essentially one island in one ocean. Bucky was the person most responsible for making Synergy a common term. Much of his work was about exploring and creating synergy. He found synergy to be a basic principle of all interactive systems. He developed a subject called Synergetics, a "Geometry of Thinking".

He claimed, "there is no energy crisis, only a crisis of ignorance." His research demonstrated that humanity could satisfy 100% of its energy needs while phasing out fossil fuels and atomic energy. For example, he showed that a wind generator fitted to every high-voltage transmission tower in the U.S. would generate three-and-a-half times the country’s total recent power output. 4. Geodesic Domes
Fuller invented the Geodesic Dome in the late 1940s to demonstrate some ideas about housing and ``energetic-synergetic geometry'' which he had developed during WWII. This invention built on his two decade old quest to improve the housing of humanity. It represents a brilliant demonstration of his synergetics principles; and in the right circumstances it could solve some of the pressing housing problems of today (a housing crisis which Fuller predicted back in 1927).
4.1 What is a geodesic dome?
[From Robert T. Bowers' paper on Domes last posted to GEODESIC in 1989.] A geodesic dome is a type of structure shaped like a piece of a sphere or a ball. This structure is comprised of a complex network of triangles that form a roughly spherical surface. The more complex the network of triangles, the more closely the dome approximates the shape of a true sphere [sic] By using triangles of various sizes, a sphere can be symmetrically divided by thirty-one great circles. A great circle is the largest circle that can be drawn around a sphere, like the lines of latitude ED: he means longitude around the earth, or the equator. Each of these lines divide the sphere into two halves, hence the term geodesic, which is from the Latin meaning ``earth dividing.''

Notes to R. Buckminster Fuller's Work
    R. Buckminster Fuller once wrote "Don't try to make me consistent. I am learning all the time." Admittedly, I am trying to make Fuller consistent. I have been studying Fuller's work for several years and I am now in the process of making my notes available through these web pages. I hope that by working together we can go through Fuller's work and pull together a consistent presentation of his ideas. Being a physics and mathematics oriented person, I have concentrated on Fuller's science and mathematics related work. Even if your not science oriented I hope you'll find these pages interesting.

03:02 PM Sep. 08, 1997 PT One of the most extraordinary books of the century is coming online. Synergetics, the magnum opus of the late R. Buckminster Fuller, has been painstakingly digitized and is being put on the Web in its entirety. Pronounced the "Leonardo da Vinci of our time" by Marshall McLuhan, Fuller invented everything from the geodesic dome to a device that cleaned without soap. While his influence spanned generations and transcended disciplines, the crowning achievement and foundation of all his work was Synergetics, in which he described and cataloged the coordinate system of "Universe," with the four-sided tetrahedron as the basic unit of all matter.
