Home Volume 26 Spring 2000 R. Buckminster Fuller sculpture to hang in Engineering Centers Building W hen the Engineering Centers Building is completed, a massive stainless-steel-and-wire sculpture designed by visionary engineer-inventor-artist R. Buckminster Fuller will hang at the entrance to its atrium. "Sixty-Strut Tensegrity," is a 500-pound, 9-foot "crystal ball" through which admirers can glimpse its creator's vision of the future, and its donors' memories of the past. "We donated it in memory of our husband and father," says Leah "Lee" Temkin of her family's gift. "We wanted something that would be as special as he was." The former Lee Sigman met Blair "Bud" Temkin on campus. She was in letters and science; he was a chemical engineer, and they married in 1949 while Lee was still in school. Eventually she earned an EdD and taught at Milwaukee Area Technical College, while Bud and his brother started Port Shell Molding, which became a successful foundry in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. The couple had a girl and three boys, and shared 48 years before Bud's death in 1998. "Bud was quietly proud of being a registered professional engineer, and we both felt his engineering education enhanced our family's lives, so a memorial gift to the engineering college felt right," says Lee. Finding "Tensegrity" was serendipitous, she says. "It had been a long day at a Chicago art show," says Lee. "I almost left, but decided to walk one last aisle. There the sculpture hung. Both its beauty and the creative engineering genius of Buckminster Fuller, which it represented, stunned me. It was an easy choice for our family."

Buckminster Fuller, Jr. (1895-1983) was the holder of over 2,000 patents and called "the American Leonardo Da Vinci Ideas are easy to come by; reduction to practice is an arduous but inspirationally rewarding matter," he explained. "Our power is in our ability to decide." An architect, inventor , engineer, writer mathematician , and educator , "Bucky" to his friends celebrated the light and strength of geodesic domes as energy-efficient housing. "I just invent," he explained. "Then wait until man comes around to needing what I've invented." His trademark was the term "Dymaxion" (a combination of dynamic," "maximum," and "ion") to explain how to get the most output from minimal input of energy and materials.

THE DESIGN-SCIENCE REVOLUTION
OF R. BUCKMINSTER FULLER
Outlined And Expanded By Libby Hubbard
aka Doctress Neutopia
December 1988 In 1927, at the age of thirty-two, after failing to succeed in the business world, Bucky Fuller decided to dedicate his life to improving our environment both physically and metaphysically (human thoughts, generalized principles, and customs) by providing protection and support of all humanity. He saw the creation of a world management system that would distribute our physical substances in a just way. His dedication was to all humanity, not just committing his efforts to the exclusive advantages of himself, his dependents, his team, or his country. Fuller sought to understand the principles of the Universe "and to discover human functioning therein, thereby to discover nature's governing complexes of generalized principles and to employ these principles in the development of the specific arti- facts that would benefit humanity's fulfillment of its essential functioning in the cosmic scheme" (126). In other words, Fuller sought to discover our cosmic human order; he thought that if we can comprehend how nature is design and governed, we will be able to organize humanity in a similar pattern. In finding this cosmic, holistic perspective and working with it, instead of against it, we will have found our ultimate human freedom and thus survival. In order to achieve this new pattern of life, Fuller feels we need to diligently work to mistress and master a design-science revolution.

Bucky Fuller probably had more influence on my thinking than any other single writer. He brought me to the realization of how science and technology can allow us to do more with less and make our "Spaceship Earth", with its apparently limited resources, into a potentially self-renewing paradise for its potentially universally wealthy, highly mobile, non-hard-working, non-exploitive/exploited intellectually productive inhabitants. Fuller eschewed politics in favor of a design science revolution and "doing what you see needs doing".

SO I am a proud black man on this day of Dr. King 2000 I am the first white person next to Bucky to admit it that I know who thinks it is great to be black. Here, you can learn more about the essential work of Buckminster Fuller. Comprehensive Anticipatorial Design Science - unitivitist Developer of Unitivity A Mind Matrix for the New Millesmal. Unitivity is the idea that all is one. This is over simplified but for now!? Another word that I have invented is syntrivity which means three becoming unity. Also orbitronics

Richard Buckminster Fuller, 1895-1983, was a most peculiar man. A short, enthusiastic bundle of thought, he often talked for many hours at a time about a plethora of subjects, relying on his seemingly indefatigable reserves of energy to provide his stamina. He was a man who has been described by some as a visionary, a prophet, a genius, and a crackpot. His theories and inventions have had a dramatic impact upon the thinking of the twentieth century. But Fuller, or 'Bucky' as he was more affectionately known, did not perceive himself as an inventor, but rather as a discoverer of general principles. He insisted that he did not set out to design a house suspended from a pole, manufacture a new type of automobile, or create a new system of cartography. Instead he merely started with the 'universe' and practicably applied its principles to specific applications. As Fuller once asserted, "I could have ended up with a pair of flying slippers".
The events that shaped Fuller's early life would later have a profound impact upon his beliefs and theories. One particular occurrence while attending Milton Academy in Massachusetts perhaps best epitomizes his precociousness as a young boy. Not surprisingly, Fuller excelled in mathematics, a subject he envisioned only as a 'game'. As the study of geometry began, the instructor explained that points, lines, and planes as elements of geometry, did not exist. The instructor stacked the planes, which did not exist, on top of each other to form a cube... which she said that 'existed'. Fuller wondered how you could possibly 'get existence from nonexistence', asking the instructor how much it weighed, how old it was, etc. To Fuller, the cube simply did not have the properties he felt defined existence.

R. Buckminster Fuller centenary celebration by Alice Martinez
f you've ever seen a geodesic dome or heard the term "Spaceship Earth," then you have had at least some exposure to work the work of R. Buckminster Fuller. Better known as "Bucky" to his supporters, this month marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of this unique man - architect, engineer, inventor, philosopher, poet and mathematician.
On July 14 - 16, Global Energy Network International (GENI) will host a series of events designed to give participants a direct experience of Bucky's work and contributions. GENI is dedicated to the creation of a world-wide energy grid, one of Bucky's key prescriptions for global prosperity [see Feb '94 issue of ET.]
A committed life
In 1927, at the age of 32 and on the brink of suicide, Fuller had a realization that set the course of the rest of his live. It struck him that his life belonged to the universe, not himself. He immediately dedicated his life "as experiment to discover what the little, penniless, unknown individual might be able to do effectively on behalf of all humanity." He even referred to himself as "Guinea Pig B" (B for Bucky).
Over the next 56 years of his life, he steadfastly held to his purpose, becoming one of the world's first futurists and global thinkers. Fuller addressed himself to the largest questions: what it would take to "make the world work" - to provide food, shelter and energy for 100 percent of humanity. This global thinking led him to coin the terms "Spaceship Earth" and "One-Town World."
