Gauss, Carl Friedrich born Johann Friederich Carl Gauss, 1777-1855, German mathematician, physicist, and astronomer. number theory ; his Disquisitiones Arithmeticae (completed in 1798 but not published until 1801) is one of the masterpieces of mathematical literature. Gauss was extremely careful and rigorous in all his work, insisting on a complete proof of any result before he would publish it. As a consequence, he made many discoveries that were not credited to him and had to be remade by others later; for example, he anticipated Bolyai and Lobachevsky in non-Euclidean geometry, Jacobi in the double periodicity of elliptic functions, Cauchy in the theory of functions of a complex variable, and Hamilton in quaternions. However, his published works were enough to establish his reputation as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. Gauss early discovered the law of quadratic reciprocity and, independently of Legendre, the method of least squares. He showed that a regular polygon of n sides can be constructed using only compass and straight edge only if n is of the form 2 p q r q r In 1801, following the discovery of the asteroid Ceres by Piazzi, Gauss calculated its orbit on the basis of very few accurate observations, and it was rediscovered the following year in the precise location he had predicted for it. He tested his method again successfully on the orbits of other asteroids discovered over the next few years and finally presented in his

    Gauss, Karl Friedrich (1777-1855)

German mathematician who is sometimes called the "prince of mathematics." He was a prodigious child, at the age of three informing his father of an arithmetical error in a complicated payroll calculation and stating the correct answer. In school, when his teacher gave the problem of summing the integers from 1 to 100 (an arithmetic series ) to his students to keep them busy, Gauss immediately wrote down the correct answer 5050 on his slate. At age 19, Gauss demonstrated a method for constructing a heptadecagon using only a straightedge and compass which had eluded the Greeks. (The explicit construction of the heptadecagon was accomplished around 1800 by Erchinger.) Gauss also showed that only regular polygons of a certain number of sides could be in that manner (a heptagon for example, could not be constructed.) Gauss proved the fundamental theorem of algebra which states that every polynomial has a root of the form a bi . In fact, he gave four different proofs, the first of which appeared in his dissertation. In 1801, he proved the

Göttingen: Dieterich, 1818 Quarto., 30 pp., Recent clothbacked boards with title in black on spine., Top corner of title-page torn, occasional light foxing. A very good, unopened copy. "In a paper dated 1818 [Gauss] calculated theoretically the secular perturbations of the first degree of orbital elements, to which a planet is subjected by other planets...His conception was that the planet's mass could be thought of as distributed over its entire orbit, with the distribution made in such a way that the mass at every sector of the elliptical ring is inversely proportional to the velocity of the planet in that sector of the orbit. The attraction that this elliptical ring exercises over another body is exactly equal to its secular perturbations. This model is characteristic of Gauss's way of thinking. The perturbation problem is not just a mass of formulas and figures...but also a living picture which gives clarity to the mathematical symbols" (Hall, Carl Friedrich Gauss). First edition, offprint form, of Gauss' fourth and final proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra, that every polynomial can be factored into linear and quadratic real factors, written and published on occasion of the fiftieth anniversary celebration of his doctorate. His 1799 thesis was in fact his first attempt at the proof, which he progressively refined over the years. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by W. P. MATEMATÝKÇÝLER Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777 - 1855) "Matematikçilerin Prensi" olarak anýlan Gauss, 1777'de Almanya'da doðdu. Eseri okuyan Lagrange, Gauss'a þunlarý yazmýþtýr: "Eseriniz sizi bir anda birinci sýnýf matematikçiler arasýna yükseltmiþtir. Uzun zamandan beri yapýlmýþ en güzel analitik keþfi ihtiva eden son bölümü çok önemli kabul ediyorum."
