J.T. Gellibrand and William Buckley February 1st, 1836
On 1 February, Gellibrand had his first meeting with William Buckley, an ex-convict who had absconded from the first Port Phillip at Sorrento in 1803 and lived with Aboriginal people until 1835. Gellibrand sought knowledge from Buckley about the Aboriginal communities he had lived with.
Extract
Buckley key dates 'I had this morning a long conversation with Buckley and explained to him fully the desire of the Association in every respect to meet his views and make him Superintendent over the Native Tribes… it appears from his statement that the Tribes are most peacably disposed [and] that they fully understand the nature of the Grants issued by them… I am quite satisfied that he can only be acted upon, by kindness, and conciliation, and by those means he will be an Instrument in the hands of providence in working a great moral change upon the aborigines'.

The Lost Staircase
Synopsis The action centres on the Dragon House. This was built by Master Balthazar Gellibrand late in Henry VII's reign. Some years later, a younger son, Nicholas, declared for Parliament in the Civil War and was disowned by his father. However, the family retained its property despite following the Royalist cause, because Nicholas had won Cromwell's favour. Nicholas was the direct ancestor of Jesanne, the heroine of the present-day story. The story itself is set in the twentieth century. Sir Ambrose, present owner of the Dragon House, has lost sisters, son and grandchildren in various tragic circumstances during and after the Great War (1914-18), and is the last of his line. He is obliged to trace the descendants of Nicholas the Roundhead, and summons fourteen-year-old Jesanne (an orphan and the only other surviving Gellibrand) from New Zealand to be brought up on the estate she will one day inherit. At first relations between the distant cousins are uneasy, but as Jesanne proves herself to be a true Gellibrand, a considerable affection develops between them. Sir Ambrose tells Jesanne that she is now mistress of the Dragon House, and from the very start he treats her accordingly. She occupies the Dame's Suite and has her own personal maid. He teaches her the family traditions, including the Dragon House Ritual at Christmas, shows her the great

Ills eyen twinkled in his hed aright, as don the sterres in a frosty night this worthy limitour was oleped" The Friar," in Canterbury Tales. The ensuing narrations have been chiefly furnished to the compiler by a "professional searcher," who was highly recommended to him by the British Museum, and should be fairly accurate in details so far as the transcription of records goes. After the death of King HUBBA by Odun in 878 HUBBA'S descendants populated Eastern and Southeastern England from the river Humber down to the English Channel, comprising mainly Lincolnshire. Rutland, Cambridge, Norfolk. Suffolk, Essex, and Kent. They engaged principally in agriculture, horticulture and floriculture, and their doings to the historical ferret remain hidden up to about the thirteenth century. John HUBBARD was born about 1235, and lived in Tye, Norfolk. J (The name is also spelled Hobard, Huberd, and Hobart). No record of his death. Thomas HUBBARD (name also spelled Hoberd and Hobart), a descendant and heir of John, was born between 1400 ^and 1425, and lived at Leyham, Norfolk. No record of his death. He left sons James and William. WILLIAM HUBBARD, son of Thomas of Leyham and brother to Sir James, was born about 1420. He left a son milks and probably other children. No record of his death.
