The History of Taxation
8 Volume Set Edited by The eight volumes of The History of Taxation are designed to cover the literature of taxation from the late seventeenth century to the end of the nineteenth century. Taxation has been of abiding interest to economists, but the intellectual problems concerning it, as well as its immediate impact have engaged a much wider public, and contributions from a very wide range of individuals and professionals have enriched the literature. The the set illustrates the richness and profusion of the literature. Beginning with Sir William Petty, the authors include not only the great and familiar names - Steuart, Hume, Smith, Ricardo, Say, Mill, McCulloch, Seligman, Edgeworth, Wicksell - but a host of other and much less well known figures. Some of these, like Hamilton, Beeke, Buchanan, Farr, Hubbard, and Cohen Stuart, are well known to specialists; but others are almost unknown to all but a very few scholars. The literature, itself the product of the historical experiences of the writers, focuses on a number of themes, reflecting in turn the problems which revenue raisers have encountered over two centuries. These include revenue shortage and the appropriate tax base; the national debt and the Sinking Fund; the introduction of income tax; the problems created by the abolition of the income tax in 1816 and the effects of its reintroduction from 1842, and the issues which subsequently arose, especially differentiation between the various sources of income, and progression.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SPACE PHYSICS
The following is obtained chiefly from Introduction to Space Physics by M.G. Kivelson and C.T. Russell with additional material provided from a variety of sources.
HISTORY
Pre 2 000 BC: Possible auroral sightings indicated in ancient Chinese literature.
11th Century: Chinese encyclopedist Shon-Kau states that "fortune-tellers rub the point of the needle with the stone of the magnet in order to make it properly indicate the south."
12th Century: Earliest mention of the compass and its application to navigation by Alexander Neekan. It seems that the compass is in common use by this time.
14th Century: Most European sailing ships carry compasses.
Differences in magnetic north and geographic north noticed by Georg Hartmann who noticed that the declination of Rome in Prussia was 6° east where it was 10° at Nüremberg.
João de Castro makes 43 determinations of Declination during a voyage along the west coast of India and in the Red Sea.
Discovery of the inclination to the horizontal of the geomagnetic field by Englishman Robert Norman.
16th - 17th Century: Scientific application attempts to describe the aurora.

Fascinating Princetown
The spectacular and
awe-inspiring coastline. SITUATED at the mouth of the Gellibrand River on the tumultuous Gibson Beach, the small township of Princetown offers many natural features worth exploring, a fascinating history and some attractive accommodation options. It was way back in 1837 - well before most of the famous shipwrecks which dot the treacherous coast - that Joseph Tice Gellibrand staggered into an Aboriginal camp at the mouth of the river. He and his fellow explorer George Brook Legrew Hesse had left Point Henry in Geelong on horseback to trace the Barwon and Leigh rivers, but like so many early explorers' adventures, this one also ended in tragedy, with Gellibrand dying on the beach after Hesse perished somewhere in the wilds of the Otways.

Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road
When the cab driver shook his head as he dropped us at our hotel, we knew we were in trouble. It had been difficult to book a room in Melbourne from the pay phones in Cairns; all the hotels were full, considerably more expensive than our guidebooks indicated, or in one case staffed by a peculiar woman with a loud braying voice and only the vaguest description of her rooms. So we had been happy to find a room in the Kingsgate Hotel on Spence St., which came recommended by both our guidebooks and rented its budget doubles for the bargain price of $A40/night. The floors in the Kingsgate were huge, with mazes of hallways and steel-grated windows looking into dusty air shafts. The walls were covered in chipped gray paint on the bottom with lighter gray paint above. Piping and ducting ran exposed along the tall remote ceilings. Large fire extingushers, securely padlocked against emergency use, were bolted to the walls and here and there little piles of fallen plaster were mounded on the thin carpet. There were six corridors and four directional signs between our room and the toilet. Sometimes the corridors ended at disused balconies, locked up and littered with bird droppings and cigarette butts. Other corridors seemed to circle around forever, and I sometimes passed the same lift or utility room two or three times before getting my bearings. Padding along the dreary gray hallways with my towel around my neck, I never met anyone except a young Indian man. I seemed to see him wherever I went in the Kingsgate. He always looked lost and wore a black leather jacket everywhere, even to the shower. The other guests might have been ghosts or locked in their rooms, for all I ever saw of them.
