January 2002 Newletter 187 Page 1 The first General Meeting of the Williamstown Historical Society for the year 2002 will be held in the Meeting Room of the Mechanics Institute at 8 p.m. on Thursday, 24th January. Please bring a plate of supper as tea and coffee will be provided. At our last General Meeting we were entertained by Joan Brogden, who is the author of the book "Neglected or Criminal'. I'm sure that most of us learnt a lot about our early prisons and hulks. Even though Joan was suffering from Laryngitis, she bravely carried on. I suspect that she would have preferred to be home in bed. Our next Guest Speaker will be Mr Michael Iccarino. Michael commenced in the position of Executive Officer of Melbourne West Consultative Committee in May 2001. Prior to that he operated his own business assisting companies in the textile and clothing industry to gain funding assistance to modernize their operations. He also lectured in industrial relations and human resource management at Victoria University as well as extensive experience working with the Federal Government and with an employer association. Michael is a local boy, having grown up in Newport, and now living in Williamstown with his wife Anmaree and their three children; Laura, Lia and David. I first met Michael when we both served on the "Access for All Tourism" Committee, which I must say gave me great personal satisfaction to be part of. Hobsons Bay Council is the first Council to meet this need and they are to be congratulated in putting out this booklet as well as a CD Rom.

The Early Settlers of South Arm Following the settlement of Hobart Town 1804 Many settlers had been granted a parcel of land to which they could start a means of farming etc to which they could derive a living. One of these William Gellibrand was granted the land now known as the South Arm Peninsula. Land was granted to free Settlers and they were allowed several convicts to help clear and work the fields.In many cases the convicts being of good conduct and after several years were also allowed a small grant of land. As other settlers arrived Gellibrand leased land to them and later they were able to purchase their lot. By 1885 many had purchased land on the Peninsula some names are Musk, Alomes, Calvert, and the famly names are still in the district today. The grave site of William Gellibrand also his Grandsons Thomas Lloyd Gellibrand and Walter Angus Bethune Gellibrand To reach the grave site you need to drive to the end of the road at Opossum Bay From there its about 2 klm walk through heavy grassed paddocks to Mary Ann Bay and from there follow the shore line north for another 700 meters. Biographia Philosophica being an Account of the Lives, Writings, and Inventions Benjamin Martin 1 Volumes Benjamin Martin (1704–82) came from a family of Surrey farmers and seems to have received little in the way of formal education. However, he taught himself mathematics and astronomy, and in time became an accomplished inventor and maker of scientific instruments. He was also a keen disciple of Newton – on whose physics he gave public lectures – as well as a considerable philosopher of language. Martin published many books on these various subjects, but his chief ambition as a writer was nothing less than to provide a synopsis of all scientific and philosophical knowledge in a grand fourteen-volume series. Martin only ever completed five of these projected books – two on philology, two on mathematics, and the Biographia Philosophica This rare little encyclopaedia contains entries detailing the lives and works of 157 people, from Thales and Euclid in antiquity to Sir Isaac Newton and Dr Nicholas Saunderson in Martin’s own century. Typically, an entry will begin with biographical information and then move on to a critical assessment of its subject’s work, ‘digested according to the Order of Time in which they lived’. Sometimes, a bibliography is given in conclusion. As was usual in his era, Martin construed the term ‘philosophy’ broadly enough to include the sciences as well as abstract thought.
