ASTROLABES AND MAPS
Some time during the Middle Ages people began to make measured maps designed for practical use in navigation. The oldest surviving example is the Pisan chart, now in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. It dates from the late 13th century, but there is no reason to believe that it was the first of its kind. Unlike the mappamundi, which co-existed with the portolan charts for a long time, the new maps emphasized purely geographical features with little of the historical, religious, and fabulous information so prominently displayed on the mappamundi. Among the many questions raised by the portolan charts, one of the most vexing is that of their construction. What kind of instruments were used to make their meticulously drawn coastlines? No written evidence survives from the earliest period of their existence. However, we do know that two tools, useful for making measured maps, were introduced into Europe in the Middle Ages. These were the astrolabes, which appeared in the tenth century, and the compass in the twelfth. The possible use of the compass in making the charts, which are marked by compass roses and rhumb lines, has been widely discussed, though no firm conclusions have been drawn. The use of the astrolabe has been treated very little. The next oldest dates from the 14th century, though it is possible that Western Europeans were using astrolabes of Islamic manufacture imported through Spain.

    1. Greeks and Hebrews: two intertwining intellectual progressions In very broad lines, Western culture is the outcome of two independent intellectual progressions: Greek philosophy and science, centered on a rational understanding of the world - and Hebrew ethics, worrying about the condition of man and his interaction with other men. On the Greek side, we note that at the beginning of the first Century AD, Eratosthenes (250 BC) had already computed the diameter of the earth with an error of less than 1/2 %, Hipparchus (150 BC) had evaluated the distance to the Moon with a 1/3 % precision, Hero (100 BC) had invented the steam engine [1]. On the Jewish side, Abraham (1800 BC) had put an end to human sacrifice, Moses (1300 BC) had codified the day of rest, to be applied even to slaves and house animals, Amos (800 BC) had preached social justice and Isaiah (700 BC) had already conceived the idea of universal peace - in a world where war remained the explicit ideal "manly" activity for another thousand years [2]. Note that in this ethical voyage of discovery, Jewish society had evolved "schools" as early as 1000 BC [3], the earliest foundations of what was later to become a learning-oriented culture. In parallel, we have, of course, the Athens Academy ( ~ 500 BC). With the destruction of the Second Temple (70 AD), the Jewish cult and rites centre on learning much more than before. Judaism, as remodeled for a countryless nation by Yokhanan Ben Zakkay (Ist Century AD) became a study-oriented religion. Note that 1000 years later, in medieval Europe, all male Jews were literate, at a time when in most of Europe, only churchmen could read.

Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

Bral je originalne spise Solomona ibn Gabirola, Abrahama ben Meir ibn Ezra, Mojzesa ben Majmona (Majmonida), Levija ben Gersona (Gresonida), Hasdaia Crescasa, Jehude Abrabenela (Leona Ebreo).

TABLAS The T hematic A nnotated B iblio-discographical L isting for A lfonsine S cholars by Sonja M. Musser in collaboration with Anthony J. Cárdenas for SPAN 501 by Dean Charles Tatum University of Arizona Fall 1998 This bibliographic project on Alfonso X, el Sabio combines two of the best published bibliographies on work relating to the monarch to date. The first is “A Decade of Alphonsine Studies: Working Notes and Bibliography” by Anthony J. Cárdenas, Jerry R. Craddock and Barbara De Marco and published in Romance Philology , Vol. XLIX, No. 2, in November 1995. The second is a discography of the recordings of the medieval king’s songs in, An Annotated Discography of Music in Spain Before 1650 nd edition, edited and compiled by Roger D. Tinnell and published by the Madison Press in 1990. The goal of this synthesis of Cárdenas bibliography and Tinnell’s discography is to combine and reorganize this information in a more user-friendly format for current and future alfoncistas. In their original formats the bibliography and discography were organized in alphabetical order by author and song title respectively. This project will organize each entry by title of alfonsine work and/or subject, sometimes placing an entry under several headings as applicable.

Our Book of the Month March, 2000 In Search of American Jewish Culture
Stephen J. Whitfield (Brandeis/New England)
Have even a slight encounter with American theater and music, American literature and art, and you will notice a Semitic presence out of proportion to our small numbers. But also be aware of the strong interactive relationship between the general, secular society and our particularist one. Only by emphasizing our distinctive religious faith, more than either practice or doctrine, will our Judaism remain viable. Whitfield's thesis: We must consciously maintain our "otherness" in the face of rampant assimilation to keep American Jewish culture Jewish. This Month's Notable Books
Since we are focusing on past and present cultures this month, we want to call your attention to a book about a frequently overlooked period of Jewish history. In Abraham's Heirs: Jews and Christians in Medieval Europe, (Syracuse) Leonard B. Glick

It is a well-kept secret that doing mathematics really is fun-at least for mathematicians-and I am amazed at how often we use the word "beautiful" to describe work that satisfies us. I am reminded of a remark by a mathematician . . . who was talking with some anthropologists about early human experiments with fire. One anthropologist suggested that these humans were motivated by a desire for better cooking; another thought they were after a dependable source of heat. [The mathematician] said he believed fire came under human control because of their fascination with the flame. I believe that the best mathematicians are fascinated by the flame, and that this is a good thing . . . [b]ecause, fortunately for society, their fascination has, in the end, provided the good cooking and reliable heat we all need. - Phillip A. Griffiths, Director of Institute for Advanced Study
