J. Willard Gibbs
From FRANK ON FREEDOM (1945) by Korzybski The great United States mathematical physicist, J. Willard Gibbs, in his Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics (Yale University Press, 1914) stressed the point that in mathematical physics there is such a thing as 'degrees of freedom'. Whoever wants to study the problems of 'fate' and 'freedom' should be familiar with that physico-mathematical formulation of 'degrees of freedom'. Review of Fate and Freedom by Jerome Frank
ALFRED KORZYBSKI: Collected Writings 1920-1950 , p. 530
International Non-Aristotelian Library From GENERAL SEMANTICS AND PHYSICO-MATHEMATICAL METHOD (31 January 1949) by Korzybski: I feel that I am honored to be here at Yale and I wish that I might have been an alumnus of Yale if for no other reason than to have had the privilege to study under your great pioneer, Professor J. Willard Gibbs. He was without doubt one of the greatest scientists this country has ever produced. I did not know Professor Gibbs personally; he was forty years my senior. But I do know his work and his brillian student and colleague, E. B. Wilson, also one of your former professors, who is living and doing creative work. While he was still practically a youngster Wilson wrote up Gibbs' modernization of the vector calculus. It is no exaggeration to say that without Gibbs and Wilson there would be no simplified and workable vector calculus. Without Gibbs, mathematical physics and modern physical chemistry, that has produced so much, would be greatly handicapped.

Some more about Gibbs:
He received his degrees from and taught at Yale, but we won't hold it against him. (He was the first student at Yale to get a graduate degree in theoretical engineering.)
As a faculty member at Yale, he once argued that math should count as fulfilling the language requirement.
He was a quiet, dignified man whose life was presumably boring. (part of the reason why no one has heard of him)
His papers were on such a high mathematical level that his colleagues at Yale didn't understand them. They were published purely on faith.
Not only does Gibbs enjoy little notoriety in our time, but he enjoyed even less in his own. This was mainly due to the fact that he was from America, back when the United States was completely backwards in science. (though certainly not in invention)
Even over in Europe, Gibbs' math was on too high of a level to be understood by most. Maxwell was one of the few scientists to see Gibbs' genius. He once gave Gibbs, as a gift, a three-dimensional model of the physical state curve for water.
By some, Gibbs is regarded as the greatest scientist of all time after Newton, Einstein, and Darwin.

    53. Hierarchical Thermodynamics
1998 is the 125th anniversary of the publication by J. willard gibbs of his firstthermodynamic work Graphical methods in the thermodynamics of fluids .
    http://www.endeav.org/evolut/hierar/hierar.htm
1998 is the 125th anniversary of the publication by J. Willard Gibbs of his first thermodynamic work "Graphical methods in the thermodynamics of fluids". J. Willard Gibbs later created the general thermodynamic theory, which is a strict physical theory applying to the whole real world. This theory has been of limited, or of questionable use in biology for the investigation of open systems. Recently the theory has been extended to real open biological systems and a hierarchical equilibrium thermodynamics has been created . A study of quasiclosed systems enables one to draw conclusions about the thermodynamic direction of biological evolution and aging of living beings. The most essential application of the theory relates to the study of living creature's behavior and to anti-aging medicine, gerontology, pharmacology, nutrition and other branches of biology and medicine.

The C Fun Run: The Real Story
by Bob Browne t was Saturday morning, 6 o'clock, and as I bent over to pull on my running shoes, a sharp pain in the temple reminded me that we had said goodbye to the last bottle of Chateau C the night before. Bob Perkins and I were sharing a hotel room, and it seemed to have become the default conference hospitality suite. It's a dirty job, but in Shahid's absence this year, somebody had to do it. I stumbled across the hotel lobby to check the temperature outside. It was a bright clear morning, but the resistance of the door to my efforts to open it betrayed a stiff Yukon breeze on the other side. As I stood outside, I wondered if the good folks at Nike had ever considered making Polarguard running shorts. The run was to start on the east side of the Yukon river, across the bridge from where the sternwheeler Klondike sits as a reminder of the area's colourful past. I joined small group of runners headed across the bridge for our meeting with destiny. By the time we arrived, the van from the college rolled into the parking lot, dropped its load of bleary-eyed runners, and headed back. There was no way to avoid it now, there was definitely going to be a run. The race start was deceptively easy, and I soon found myself running along a narrow trail beside the river. It quickly became apparent that this was a cross-country course, sometimes requiring a jump over a creek, other times a quick decision about which fork in the trail to take. The pace seemed tentative, as if the runners needed some time to warm up and check out the competition. After an uneventful 2.5 km, we reached the dam where the route doubled back. There is extensive fish ladder here, constructed to allow fish to struggle around the power dam and continue up stream. Today, there was no water, no fish, and absolutely no reason to stop, and yet I found myself joining the crowd staring down into the empty structure. There was nothing there! Why, for the first time in C

    Vector

A vector is formally defined as an element of a vector space . In the commonly encountered vector space (i.e., Euclidean n -space ), a vector is given by n coordinates and can be specified as . Vectors are sometimes referred to by the number of coordinates they have, so a 2-dimensional vector is often called a two-vector, an n -dimensional vector is often called an n -vector , and so on. Vectors can be added together ( vector addition ), subtracted ( vector subtraction ) and multiplied by scalars scalar multiplication Vector multiplication is not uniquely defined, but a number of different types of products, such as the dot product cross product , and tensor direct product can be defined for pairs of vectors. A vector from a point A to a point B is denoted , and a vector v may be denoted , or more commonly, v . The point A is often called the "tail" of the vector, and B is called the vector's "head." A vector with unit length is called a unit vector and is denoted using a hat . An arbitrary vector may be converted to a unit vector by dividing by its norm (i.e., length)

Gibbs Phenomenon VIEW ABOUT HISTORY PRINT Summary: Discusses the effect, referred to as Gibb's Phenomenon, where as certain conditions are relaxed so that we may represent discontinuous function from a set of continuous ones. Note: This browser cannot display MathML. To be able to view the math on this page, please consider using another browser, such as Mozilla or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or above MathPlayer required for IE). Introduction The Fourier Series is the representation of continuous-time, periodic signals in terms of complex exponentials. The Dirichlet conditions suggest that discontinuous signals may have a Fourier Series representation so long as there are a finite number of discontinuities. This seems counter-intuitive, however, as complex exponentials are continuous functions. It does not seem possible to exactly reconstruct a discontinuous function from a set of continuous ones. In fact, it is not. However, it can be if we relax the condition of 'exactly' and replace it with the idea of 'almost everywhere'. This is to say that the reconstruction is exactly the same as the original signal except at a finite number of points. These points, not necessarily suprisingly, occur at the points of discontinuities. History In the late 1800s, many machines were built to calculate Fourier coefficients and re-synthesize:
