    Local Author Venues: Great Exposure
By Monique Muhlenkamp, New World Library
The Bay Area is touted as having one of the largest number of readers in the U.S., as well as being the home to many authors. If that's the case, why do we have so few venuesoutside of local bookstoresfor our authors to read in? Sydney started by saying that she, too, fights for airtime, space and attention for her events. The City Arts Lectures Series started 22 years ago, long before bookstores became so competitive. She stressed the importance of making each event unique. Sometimes that uniqueness stems from pairing opposites, like authors and celebrities whose works and ideas can be combined to complete an onstage presentation. An example of this was having author Peter Matthiessen, poet Gary Snyder, and actor/activist Peter Coyote together for an event. Before taking questions from the audience, she shared that she has a job opening for a production/administrative assistant. Please contact her for more details. Q. How many people can the Herbst Theatre accommodate?

    Self-portrait c.1850

Susan Fereday is one of the few artists whose works in the National Library's collections enable us to trace her art over many years of her life. Works held in the Library include a sketchbook of her trip around Europe, dated 1831-34, and some of her sketchbooks completed while living at George Town near Launceston in Tasmania after 1846. Fereday was married to the local vicar who was more a scientist than a parson and she painted and drew many works for him. This beautiful self-portrait is highly romantic and there is a companion painting of her husband in the Library.

    Six Scientists Receive Lasker Awards
Prizes recognize researchers' basic, clinical, and special achievements
    By Eugene Russo
From left, Michael Houghton, Harvey Alter, Aaron Ciechanover, Lasker jury chairman Joseph Goldstein, Sydney Brenner, Alexander Varshavsky, and Avram Hershko. Ubiquitin-related research has made the transition from the basic to clinical arena in the past decade, and the field is now central to understanding diseases ranging from cancer to neurodegenerative disorders. So the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation thought it only appropriate that this year's recipients of the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research should go to researchers who were instrumental in the inception of the field. Avram Hershko Aaron Ciechanover , and Alexander Varshavsky The foundation ( www.laskerfoundation.org ) presented the basic research awards in a Sept. 22 ceremony in New York, along with the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research and the Albert Lasker Award for Special Achievement in Medical Science. Harvey Alter and Michael Houghton shared the clinical research award for their accomplishments that dramatically reduced the risk of blood transfusion-associated hepatitis in the United States.

US planning to recruit one in 24 Americans as citizen spies
By Ritt Goldstein July 15 2002
The Bush Administration aims to recruit millions of United States citizens as domestic informants in a program likely to alarm civil liberties groups.
Civil liberties groups have already warned that, with the passage earlier this year of the Patriot Act, there is potential for abusive, large-scale investigations of US citizens.
As with the Patriot Act, TIPS is being pursued as part of the so-called war against terrorism. It is a Department of Justice project.
Highlighting the scope of the surveillance network, TIPS volunteers are being recruited primarily from among those whose work provides access to homes, businesses or transport systems. Letter carriers, utility employees, truck drivers and train conductors are among those named as targeted recruits.

Published on Monday, July 15, 2002 in the Sydney Morning Herald US Planning to Recruit One in 24 Americans as Citizen Spies by Ritt Goldstein The Bush Administration aims to recruit millions of United States citizens as domestic informants in a program likely to alarm civil liberties groups. The Terrorism Information and Prevention System , or TIPS, means the US will have a higher percentage of citizen informants than the former East Germany through the infamous Stasi secret police. The program would use a minimum of 4 per cent of Americans to report "suspicious activity". A pilot program, described on the government Web site www.citizencorps.gov, is scheduled to start next month in 10 cities, with 1 million informants participating in the first stage. Assuming the program is initiated in the 10 largest US cities, that will be 1 million informants for a total population of almost 24 million, or one in 24 people.
