A tanulmány Benjamin Gompertz elõször 1825-ben publikált, híressé vált függvényét mutatja be, melynek eredeti rendeltetése a “halandóság ereje” fogalmának a halandóság elemzéséhez történõ bevezetése volt. Tanulmányunk az eredeti Gompertz-formula megfelelõ átalakításával újradefiniálja a halandósági tábla függvényeit, és példákkal szemlélteti a Gompertz-függvény megnövekedett felhasználási lehetõségeit az általános korspecifikus termékenységi arányszámok és ez utóbbiak kumulált értékei, a házas termékenység korspecifikus arányszámai, a legalább i számú gyermeket szült nõknek a paritás-specifikus termékenységi táblákon belüli száma, a belsõ vándorlás korspecifikus arányszámai, a halandósági tábla továbbélési függvénye és halálozási valószínûségei modellezésében. Bemutatja, hogy a Gompertz-függvény egyes esetekben kétszer, sõt háromszor is illeszthetõ az illeszkedés szorosságának növelése, illetve valamely több függvénybõl álló modellrendszer elõállítása céljából. Alkalmazási lehetõségeinek illusztrálása fõként az 1983. évi magyarországi adatok felhasználásával történt.

IN 1996, FINCH AND USC
However, in a study published in the May 1996 issue of the Journal of Gerontology, Finch and Pike found that people living in wealthy, developed regions are at a 10-times lower risk for disease and environmental hazards than those living in parts of Asia and Africa.
By reducing infectious disease, accidents and natural disasters to one-50th the current level, the scientists calculate, half of all 50-year-olds could live up to 120 years. This, however, depends on huge medical advances.
FINCH HAS BEEN INTERESTED
As an undergraduate at Yale University in the late 1950s, Finch studied physics, as did many young men caught up in the post-Sputnik science boom.
Finch completed a thesis on the molecular mechanisms of aging and took a post at Cornell University in 1970, but was lured to Los Angeles in 1972 by the prospect of starting a new school of gerontology, the first of its kind in the United States.
Finch and Thomas Kirkwood of the University of Newcastle, in England, had the notion that chance variation, while clearly recognized for years, has never been properly observed. How else to explain genetically identical worms, raised under the same laboratory conditions, dying over a three-fold range of ages? Or inbred mice, born of the same mother and reared in the same environment, dying over a similarly wide variation? Human twin studies also exhibit unusual differences in life spans.

Watching the recent television series Great Britons , where a shortlist of ten (the demi-greatest?) was extracted from an initial list of 100 candidates, analysed, and voted upon, my first reaction was to think what an eclectic lot they were. Why John Lennon? Why Diana? Why no Faraday or Fleming? And then there were suggestions of vote-rigging on behalf of some of the candidates.

BBC Radio The starkest feature of ageing - its hallmark, in fact - is that the risk of falling ill and dying increases inexorably as we get older. This unwelcome principle was first cast into mathematical form in 1825 by Benjamin Gompertz, a pioneer of actuarial science. What Gompertz found was that, like compound interest, adult mortality rates increase exponentially with age. In effect, your risk of dying doubles with every eight additional years that you live. If Gompertz were alive today, he would find that this fundamental property has not altered but that the overall level of death rates has fallen. It is as if the capital on which his compound interest was acting had grown less. The most significant trends affecting longevity today are the unexpected and continuing declines in the death rates of older people. If you had asked most experts just a couple of decades ago what they would have predicted for the patterns of mortality at the end of the century, the answer you would have received was that the continuing declines in preventable, early mortality would have revealed ever more clearly the rigid, immutable pattern of mortality associated with intrinsic ageing. The medical term to describe the change from a pattern of mortality dominated by acute infectious disease to a pattern in which the chronic degenerative diseases play the major role is the 'epidemiological transition'. Linked to this is the idea of 'mortality substitution'.

History of Actuarial Science
10 Volume Set Edited by Trevor A Sibbett and Steven Haberman The History of Actuarial Science is the first collection of its kind. This edition covers the key period in the history of actuarial science from the mid-seventeenth century to the early nineteenth century. It gives an essential insight into how actuarial principles have developed throughout history. In 110 texts, the most important progressions in actuarial thought are preserved with scholarly annotation placing the pieces in historical context. Trevor Sibbett and Steven Haberman, with the support of the Institute of Actuaries have compiled the most significant pamphlets from the year 220 to those written in the early twentieth century.

Data on the benefits of screening that have been obtained from studies of middle-aged adults cannot be extrapolated to the elderly; indeed, benefits decline appreciably with age. In addition, recommendations based on expert opinion are conflicting. The authors present an tailored, stepwise approach that weighs the benefits of screening against the risks and cost for each patient.

Huber Professor, Department of Medicine, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, N. H. As more people live into the eighth and ninth decades of life, physicians increasingly will have to decide whether to routinely screen older patients. Because few clinical trials of screening and prevention have enrolled patients aged 70 years and older, an evidence-based answer to this question is unlikely in the near future. Until then, one way to decide about screening in the elderly is to follow recommendations that are based on expert opinion. Unfortunately, current guidelines differ, no doubt reflecting the scientific uncertainty that exists. For example, the American College of Physicians and American Society of Internal Medicine recommend against routine screening mammography for breast cancer in women older than 75 years; the U. S. Preventive Services Task Force states that evidence for or against routine screening in women older than 70 is insufficient to make recommendations; and the American Cancer Society and American Medical Association cite no upper age limit for routine screening. The recommendations for other conditions are similarly inconsistent.
