    Description
E.G. Hogg was born in 1863 at Salisbury and graduated M.A. from Trinity College, Dublin. In 1890 he was appointed resident tutor and lecturer in mathematics at Trinity College, Melbourne, and in 1900 acting professor of mathematics at the University of Tasmania, and of mining engineering in 1902. In 1903 he came to Christchurch to be senior mathematics master at Christ's College, a post he continued to hold until 1928. In the interim he was appointed lecturer in mathematics at Canterbury University College, 1908, and in the same year was made President of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury. A keen amateur astronomer, he became a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and also took a life-long active interest in the affairs of the Church of England.
Some fifty diaries kept by Hogg and, following his last illness, by his wife, Lucy, record nearly fifty years of social life and engagements from the arrival of the Hoggs in Christchurch; 1903-1951.

Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor NEW HAVEN, CONN. AHEAD OF HER TIME: Evelyn Granville was the first African-American woman in the US to earn a PhD in math, from Yale in 1949. She returned to Yale recently to speak about her life and current math education in American schools.
BILL BURKHART/SPECIAL TO THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR Don't tell Evelyn Boyd Granville that math lovers are nerds. This child of the Great Depression and daughter of a janitor has a mission: neutralize the belief among today's students that being good at math makes you a social misfit. "You could be great at music at a young age, and nobody looks upon you as weird ... do they? We must get beyond this for mathematics. And I think we can." Granville didn't have an easy start. She attended a segregated school in the US capital and grew up poor. But she decided, even as a grade-schooler solving math problems in her head for fun, that everything would come out right if she stuck with math. And it has.
