George Henry Green
Mr George Henry Green, 40, was born in 1861 in Dorking, Surrey. He lived in Gunnislake, Cornwall for a time and later moved back to Dorking, Surrey where he lived at 1 Lyons Terrace. He wife was Theresa Morris, originally of Coventry, Warwickshire, they had 3 children. After indifferent health and the subsequent break up of his marriage he decided to emigrate to Lead City, South Dakota to seek work in the motor trade. He booked a third class passage on Titanic . His wife and family had moved to her parents in Spon Street, Coventry. George sent a postcard to his brother-in-law, E A Morris of Queen Victoria Road, Coventry, showing the ship and her dimensions, his message was 'Lovely Sailing'. George was lost in the sinking, his body, if recovered, was never identified. References

George Green 's father, also called George Green, was a baker in Nottingham. After serving his apprenticeship to a baker in Nottingham George Green Senior had married Sarah Butler (the mathematician's mother) in 1791 and Sarah's father had helped George Green Senior to buy his own bakery in Wheatsheaf Yard in Nottingham. George and Sarah had one son and one daughter. The son was George Green, the mathematician and, although the date of his birth is unknown, he was baptised on 14 July 1793. His sister Ann was born two years later and the family were reasonably prosperous with the bakery business being successful. In September 1800 there were riots in England when food prices were high and people did not have enough to eat. The corn dealers and bakers were blamed for keeping back food until the prices rose even higher and crowds of people broke into bakers and tried to steal food. George Green's bakery was attacked and the he wrote a letter to the mayor asking for protection (the spelling and capital letters follow Green's letter):- Sept th To the Right Worshipfull the Mayor and his Bretheren haveing all my Windows Broke Last night and being much thretend tonight with more mischief being done to me such as entering my House therefore Gentlemen I most Humbly crave your protection such as the Berer of this can explain to you from your Humble servant George Green.

london Why is the film called George Washington?
It reminded me of being a kid and not knowing the truth about a man with so much myth and historical importance. Is it true that you were very keen to make 'George Washington' different from the stereotypical self-reflective indie film?
The actors and crew all lived together for the shoot of 'George Washington'. Would you wish to recreate such a set-up on your next film?
It all depends on the subject matter or organic approach to the material. In GW we were dealing with kids that needed to be open and feel comfortable with the environment in order to express themselves. Some films wouldn't need that. It does inspire a lot of conflict which we tried in GW to use to our advantage.

interviews
reviews how to short shout ... interview with david gordon green For an indie debut, you spent a lot of money on the look of the film. Could you discuss the importance of both photography and the music to your filmmaking process?
We didn't spend a lot of money on anything, but all of the money we had was put into the camera department to capture the landscape and environment in a way that would be cinematic. To me, film is the perfect blend of pictures, performance and music. To create an evocative mood, tone or atmosphere, they really need to compliment each other and bring the audience to a new sense of place. You cite 'Days of Heaven' and 'McCabe and Mrs Miller' as important films in terms of influencing the way in which you make films. Could you explain how Robert Altman and particularly Terrence Malick influenced you?

George Green
Journal Contributor George Green writes: I was born in a village called Newbottle (strange name that, as I am often found asking for one), in 1952. I grew up in post-WII North East England during the 50's and can even remember rationing still being in place. I attended Houghton-le-Spring Grammar School during the 60's and had aspirations to becoming an astronaut (!) or some sort of technical person. I of course stayed up all night and watched Neil and Buzz walking on the surface of the moon. Anyway, I ended up at teacher's college and did a year of mathematics teaching at a colliery village in England, just as the Apollo programme was closing and the Skylab one starting. I had followed the Apollo program from start to finish, and recall walking up a tiny little street in a fishing village on the Italian Riviera just after the 13 incident, hoping that the programme would not be halted. It was with great satisfaction that, back at college, I watched the Apollo 14 and 15 missions being the success that they were in 1971. In 1974 I secured a job with the New South Wales Department of School Education, Australia, and left the UK and my parents (I was their only son) on my twenty-second birthday. I told them I would go for two years, check it out, and if I did not like it, return to England. It is now the Year 2000 and I am still here, with a Geophysics degree and three daughters later, so I guess I like it here at the Antipodes.

George Green has been a USDA employee for the past four years, working in an Insect Biological Control Laboratory at the Western Cotton Research Laboratory in Phoenix, AZ. He started out as a student worker in 1999 and worked through the summer field season of 2000. He then made the decision to leave for a while to focus on school. In 2001, George was fortunate enough to be able to return back to the lab to work on a 180-day appointment until his status was changed to a student position again, and finally into a two-year appointment which he is currently on.
The work that George was hired to focus on is the study of distribution patterns of the Glassywinged sharpshooter ( a major crop pest which carries a bacteria that desiccates citrus, ornamental, and other important plants). This research has taken place in Moreno Valley, CA, and Fillmore, CA, with a focus on the eradication of this insect in these areas.
