Robert Grosseteste: A Thirteenth-Century Churchman
In the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, the English church was part of an international institution that was more powerful, better organized and intellectually more vital than ever before. Those who directed (or attempted to direct) the organization had a single goal, to implement reform. To them that slippery word meant the unification of Christian society under papal sovereignty, so that society could be sanctified and purified. Around 1200, reform was not merely a vague longing or a set of demands for clerical independence. It was a comprehensive program. Key church leaders and clerical intellectuals had spent a century creating that program. Christian doctrine in other words, what believers were expected to believe; the rights of the church hierarchy over its personnel, its property, and the laity; the legal structures that enforced these rights: By 1170 or so, all of these things had been clarified and defined. Even more than the papal court, it was the schools of Paris and Bologna and elsewhere that established the broad principles and the detailed rules that would govern the church and all its members. When you think about the twelfth-century renaissance and the revival of learning, you must think of it as an ideological movement with practical aims, not as pure scholarship untouched by power politics. In the words of Richard Southern, the schools were the parliaments that laid down the rules for Latin Christendom. They were also the places where executives were trained to enforce those rules.

GROSSETESTE AND BACON

Click here for audio of Episode 1153. Today, Robert Grosseteste, Roger Bacon, and cyberspace. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. R obert Grosseteste was born in 1168 and educated in the cathedral school at Oxford, in medieval England. He was as near to being a scientist as that world had to offer. When Oxford became a university in 1215, he was its first chancellor. Grosseteste was an Aristotelian in a Platonist world. Historian Margaret Wertheim tells us he lived a very strict monastic life, but he had Aristotle's talent for scientific observation. He looked for God's perfection, but he did so in the physical world. For Grosseteste, God was light. Understanding light meant understanding God. And since light followed the rules of Euclid, the way to light and to God was through geometry. It was Grosseteste who first figured out that a rainbow wasn't just reflected light, it was refracted light. Light is bent in the mists that form rainbows the same way it's bent in a pool of water.

As bishop, Grosseteste was an indefatigable administrator and zealous reformer, visiting the monasteries, assigning suitable candidates to parish offices, and preaching to the people. Grosseteste fought for the maintenance of the Magna Carta. He thwarted efforts of Henry III to control ecclesiastical appointments, and as a member of the baronial council he supported the reforms of Simon de Montfort Innocent IV for his excessive exactions and for appointing foreigners to rich English benefices; he also attacked the Curia for its corruption and indolence. Some historians see in Grosseteste's protests against Rome an influence upon Wyclif and a foreshadowing of the Reformation Grosseteste was a prolific scholar. He knew Greek and probably Hebrew; his translations of, and commentaries on, Aristotle served as a foundation for the
