A Conference in Analysis
Announcement
"A Conference in Analysis" was held at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, from Tuesday, October 12, 1999 through Saturday, October 16, 1999. Organizing Committee: Vitaly Bergelson, Dan Burghelea, Joe Diestel, and Paul Nevai [chair] The purpose of the conference was to bring together distinguished mathematicians in a number of areas of analysis such as Complex Analysis, Harmonic Analysis, Operator Theory, Partial Differential Equations, Banach Spaces, and Approximation Theory, with young researchers and graduate students. The conference topics are closely related to the research subjects which our friend and colleague Boris Mityagin has studied during his forty year long mathematical career. The speaker were Yuri Brudnyi, Ronald A. DeVore, Alexander Dynin, Per Enflo, Ciprian Ilie Foias, Theodore W. Gamelin, Evgenii A. Gorin, William B. Johnson, Thomas Kappeler, Yitzhak Katznelson, Boris Korenblum, Anatolii Kostioutchenko, Vitali Milman, Nikolai K. Nikolski, Sergey Novikov, Alexander Pelczynski, Vladimir M. Tikhomirov, Dietmar Vogt, Alexander Volberg, Vyaceslav Zahariuta, and Nahum Zobin. The list of particpiants is given here The conference was supported by funds from the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications at Minnesota, the

Thursday, June 27th, 2002 11:54 am The End
This ends this stage of my journal since I have now left the US to go home to
Sweden. If you want to discuss any of the books, or have recommendations for
other books, you can post them here or in my Yahoo group (it is mostly
in Swedish, but accepts posts in English). Comment on this 11:53 am Jim Goad "Shit Magnet"
I consider myself a fan of Jim Goad's writing, so of course I wanted his new
book. I think it will be interesting, as an auto-biography and as an inside
description of what it is like to be a very controversial writer. Comment on this Monday, May 27th, 2002 8:30 pm Elmer L Smith “Meet the Mennonites”
Together with my friends I visited Harmony, a small village just outside of Pittsburgh. It was founded by a German sect in the 19th century. When they left after ten years, they sold the village to a Mennonite pastor and his descendants still live there. I bought the book in the museum shop and I am looking forward to learning something more about Mennonites (and Amish) then what you get from Hollywood movies. Comment on this 8:29 pm Roy Lisker “The Quest for Alexander Grothendieck” Lisker edits a magazine called Ferment which writes about some of my favorite subjects including conspiracies and mathematics. Grothendieck was considered one of the most influential mathematicians of the 20th century, when he in 1988 refused to accept a prestigious award and in a public letter declared that he was leaving science and the rest of the world. The letter contained references to the soon to come destruction of the world and urged people not to seek him out. To Lisker this was a challenge and this self published book tells of his attempts to find Grothendieck.

1) Pursuing stacks (A la poursuite des champs), 1983 letter from Alexandre Grothendieck to Daniel Quillen, 593 pages, apparently available only from someone who wants to copy 593 pages for you - i.e., not me! I owe somebody enormous thanks for sending this to me, but I won't mention his name, since I don't want people pestering him for copies. Grothendieck is mainly famous for his work on algebraic geometry, in which he introduced the concept of "schemes" to provide a modern framework for the subject. He was also interested in reformulating the foundations of topology, which is reflected in "Pursuing Stacks". This is a long letter to Quillen, inspired by Quillen's 1967 book "Homotopical Algebra". It's a fascinating mixture of visionary mathematics, general philosophy and a bit of personal chat. Let me quote a bit: Now, the problem is that the correct *definition* of an n-category is a highly nontrivial affair! And it gets more complicated as n increases! A 0-category is nothing but a bunch of objects. In other words, it's basically just a *set*, if we allow ourselves to ignore certain problems about classes that are too big to qualify as sets. A 1-category is nothing but a category. Recall the definition of a category (see "categories", available by ftp as described at the end of this post): The axioms for a category are that it consist of a set of objects and for any 2 objects X and Y a set Hom(X,Y) of morphisms from X to Y, and

Fields-Medaillengewinner
At the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto, a resolution was adopted that at each ICM, two gold medals should be awarded to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement. Professor J. C. Fields, a Canadian mathematician who was secretary of the 1924 Congress, later donated funds establishing the medals which were named in his honor. Consistent with Fields's wish that the awards recognize both existing work and the promise of future achievement, it was agreed to restrict the medals to mathematicians not over forty at the year of the Congress. In 1966 it was agreed that, in light of the great expansion of mathematical research, up to four medals could be awarded at each Congress.
