The Church of S. Maria in Araceli Built in its present shape between 1675 and 1680, the church of Santa Maria in Araceli is one of the most important examples of baroque religious architecture in all Venetian territory. ad cellam " from which arcella and then araceli derived. Guarini’s presence in Vicenza was ascertained at least on two occasions: the first time, in 1672 (from the 21st to the 28th of December), he was in Vicenza in order to take two novices to the local Theatine convent; the second time, in 1675 (from October the 15th to November the 17th), Guarini was in Vicenza to present a project for the church of S. Gaetano that was to be built on the main road, the Corso, and that, eventually, wasn’t built. Very likely, during Guarini's second visit, the nuns of Araceli convent asked for a project for their church, which they intended to rebuild completely; for its realization then, the new project was probably given to Carlo Borrella who was the most famous building contractor of that time (the name of Carlo Borrella, in fact, appears in an inscription which can be seen from the "matroneo", the women gallery in the church). The recent restoration, carried out with the contribution of "Cassa di Risparmio di Verona, Vicenza, Belluno e Ancona" Foundation, allows us to enjoy, much more than in the past, the grandeur and the complexity of the original project as well as some simplifications made during Borrella's work. The original finish with marble (marmorino) of the inside walls has been recovered and, together with it, the chromatic contrast between the base parallelepipedon with a double ellipse inscribed and the cylinder containing the dome in which the smaller cylinder of the lantern is included.

TURIN 1.
TURIN 1. - LA PORTA PALATINA ET LE THEATRE ROMAIN
A l'origine, l'actuelle Porta Palatina s'appelait "Doranea".

ENCYCLOPEDIA
Architecture, Biographies Guarini, Guarino Related Category: Architecture, Biographies Guarini, Guarino Pronunciation Key Architettura civile, posthumously edited by Vittone in 1737. After studying in Rome, he returned to his birthplace, Modena, where he was ordained in the Theatine order. In 1660 he moved to Messina and designed several important church buildings there. Soon after, he traveled to Paris, where he built the Theatine church of Sainte-Anne-la-Royale (destroyed 1823) and wrote a mathematical-philosophical treatise, Placita philosophica (1665). Settling in Turin, he designed two palaces and three centralized churches; the Sindone Chapel and the Church of San Lorenzo are considered two of the finest examples of baroque architecture. Guarini reached the pinnacle of his achievement in his planning of domes that suggest the loftiness and openwork of the spires of Gothic churches.
